Japanese Breakfast: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 5 Streams • 3 years ago

Oct. 25, 2017 | Marissa Lorusso -- As Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner writes sparkling, opulent dream pop about grief and love (and, occasionally, robots). After releasing its debut album, Psychopomp last year, the band returned with this year's stunning Soft Sounds From Another Planet. Where Psychopomp, written in the immediate aftermath of the death of Zauner's mother, zeroed in on the experience of Zauner's grief, Soft Sounds widens her aperture, featuring paeans to her coping mechanisms, ruminations on crooked relationship dynamics and said sci-fi robot fantasy.

At its Tiny Desk concert, the band swapped out Soft Sound's gauzy, astral synths for acoustic guitar and piano, and was joined by members of Washington, D.C. string quartet Rogue Collective. Zauner had wanted to do something special for the performance, and was tipped off by Landlady's Adam Schatz that the Rogue Collective make pretty great Tiny Desk partners. The Collective practiced with Japanese Breakfast the day before the Tiny Desk, and was a featured guest later that night at the band's D.C. show.

The adaptation highlighted Zauner's strength as a songwriter, providing an even more direct line into the raw emotion at the heart of her songs. The string swells during "Boyish" lent gravity to the song's bittersweet desperation. During "Till Death," her ode to marriage, Zauner sang — as she often does — in a way that strains her voice to the crackling, taut edge of heartbreak. It's arresting on any stage, but particularly powerful in the stark midday light of NPR Music's office.

For its final song at the Tiny Desk, Japanese Breakfast performed "This House." Gone was the Rogue Collective, and indeed much of the band — just Zauner and pianist Craig Hendrix remained. The song describes moments in love that are more fearful labor than bliss, the hazy space where commitment, confusion and longing intersect. Like much of Japanese Breakfast's music, the performance shows Zauner looking unblinkingly at fear and pain, daring us to do the same.

Mustang Sally Guitar Lesson (Wilson Pickett) Hotney 7 Streams • 3 years ago

How to Play Mustang Sally on Guitar

THIS is a song that I struggled with learning for a while. It wasn’t the chords that I struggled with or the song form, those are both very common patterns. Where I got stuck was with the actual guitar part to play from the recording.

It sounded like one guitar but I couldn’t quite get my part to sound like the recording. So for years, I played this song on gigs with just a common rhythm accompaniment that wasn’t like the guitar part on the recording. It wasn’t until later I finally went back and figured it out from the recording. It’s actually TWO guitars.

In this “Mustang Sally” guitar lesson, I want to share with you the chords, rhythms, and scales to start jamming it with ease today! I’ll break down the guitar parts from the recording and share how you can combine them to play a great pattern for this song on one guitar.

Also, it’s a valuable song to know because it comes up at many jam sessions and parties. A lot of people play it!

So with that said make sure you’re tuned up and let’s dive in!

What is the meaning behind Mustang Sally?
“Mustang Sally” was originally written and first recorded by Mack Rice. Rice recorded it in 1965 and it was released under the artist name “Sir Mack Rice”.

The legend is that Rice had originally written the song as a joke for a fellow gospel singer he knew from Della Reese’s band who wanted a new Ford Mustang car.

Apparently, the original title of the song was “Mustang Mama”, but was later changed to “Mustang Sally” at the suggestion of Aretha Franklin.

I think that actually deserves songwriting credit if it’s true. That’s a nice contribution and makes the song pull more because it’s more specific. Unfortunately, from my research, it looks like she didn’t get credit.

The song later became more popular after Wilson Pickett covered it the following year. It was first released as a single, and then later included on his album The Wicked Pickett released in 1966.

Plus in 1966, John Lee Hooker also recorded an entirely different song with a very similar title “Mustang Sally & GTO”

Mustang Sally Chords
“Mustang Sally” only uses 3 chords. The song is in the key of C major and uses the I, IV, and V chords, C, F, and G.

Ahora todo cambió, le toca a ella

Latino Gang

Ayer la vi perreando solita (Welcome to the Remix)

Dice “me sigue tirando y no caí, aí, aí”

iPa’ beber, iPa’ fumar, iPa’ joder (¿Qué?)

Dedicao’ pa’ ti decía así (Welcome to the remix)

Tú te has creído que te iba a llorar (No)

Ahora ella quiere carretera
