Lyrics:
Back before birthdays were somethin’ she’d dreads
Back before children had settled her friends
Back when the radio spoke to her heart
Oh girls they wanna have fun

Oneida I know that I’m younger than most
But I’m willin’ if you got the time
To buy us some wine

I lay here awake and I laugh at her jokes
She is referencin’ movies I’m too young to know
And I’m lettin’ her lead as we dance in the dark
Oh girl I’m fallin’ in love

Oneida I know that I’m younger than most
But I’m willin’ if you got the time
To buy us some wine
I’ll bring my guitar I’ve been workin on learnin’
That song you’ve been dyin’ to sing
About weddins and rings

Pleadin’ my case with the bro at the door
Buddy I know we’ve been through this before
Ya can’t let me go in, but if I wait outside
Will you give her a message for me

Tell her Oneida I know that I’m younger than most
But I’m willin’ if you got the time
To buy us some wine
I’ll bring my guitar I’ve been workin on learnin’
That song you’ve been dyin’ to sing
About weddins and rings
I’ll strum in the back and come in where I can
Harmonize on a line or two
But this song’s all you

TK Kirkland On Kevin Hart, Jay-Z, DMX, Elon Musk, Tupac, Biggie, Cam Newton, Performance by Awich

In this episode of Club Shay Shay, Shannon Sharpe sits down with the incomparable TK Kirkland—a trailblazing stand-up comedian, cultural critic, and one of the most seasoned voices in entertainment.

With over 40 years in the game, TK has shared the stage with legends, rocked sold-out crowds around the world, and built a reputation as comedy’s best-kept secret. Known for his raw storytelling, street-smart wisdom, and undeniable presence, TK is a veteran who’s seen it all—and lived to tell the wildest stories you’ve never heard.

The episode kicks off with an electric performance from Japanese rap star Awich before Shannon dives into a dynamic conversation with TK Kirkland. TK opens up about getting his start opening for N.W.A. and New Edition, and what it was like working with hip-hop heavyweights like Jay-Z, Lloyd, Gwen Stefani, Birdman, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Missy Elliott, DMX, Nelly, Eve, and Timbaland.

TK reflects on the time MC Ren slept with a woman he brought on tour, his take on whether Jay-Z owes Dame Dash, and why he believes Elon Musk should be quiet. He shares advice from Andre 3000 on co-parenting, his love for DMX—who he calls the greatest solo rapper of all time—and the eerie experience of being with Tupac the day he was shot and Biggie on the day he died.

He opens up about his time behind bars, including sharing a cell with Rick James, the Menendez brothers, and Tupac. He recalls being booed while performing in jail, and talks about working with Mike Epps, Sandra Bullock, and Godfrey. He shares his firsthand experiences with Suge Knight, R. Kelly, and Diddy, and even admits to robbing Charlie Murphy’s Rolex and stealing from Diddy. He also shares memories of knowing Richard Pryor, Keenen Wayans, and Prince before they made it big.

TK weighs in on the report of Tory Lanez being stabbed in prison and gives unfiltered takes on Hollywood, cancel culture, and online haters. He shares why he genuinely wants a minivan, reveals his worst purchase, and reflects on money, investing, and the cost of fame.

He opens up about how he became a comedian, his long-standing beefs with Robin Harris and Michael Blackson, and the competitive, gate-kept nature of the comedy industry. He discusses Noah Lyles' beef with Tyreek Hill over shoe deals, apologizing to Cam Newton, and why he publicly said Kevin Hart isn’t funny. He also shares the family tragedies that shaped him, the best advice he’s ever received, and his new show “The People’s Podcast.”

The episode closes with a second performance from Awich, followed by an intimate sit-down where she opens up about her upbringing in Okinawa, learning English by listening to Tupac, and her journey into rap. She talks about her sake business, working with RZA, the loss of her husband, and turning that grief into creative power. She also shares her dreams of collaborating with Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla.

Don’t miss this raw, hilarious, and powerful episode from one of the most unfiltered minds in comedy.

SUNSET BLVD.: Tiny Desk Concert
SUNSET BLVD.: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 2 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

Mitra I. Arthur | May 5, 2025
As a director, Jamie Lloyd applies a minimalist approach to theater. His revival of SUNSET BLVD. is the perfect match for the sometimes challenging directive of Tiny Desk — to distill the essence of the music. All artifice is stripped down to showcase the tragedy of the characters and the grandeur of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. In this tale of tarnished Hollywood, Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis make their Tony Award-nominated Broadway debuts as Norma Desmond, faded star of the silent screen, and failing screenwriter Joe Gillis.

For this production, the show serves up a dazzling pair of Tiny Desk versions in conversation with arrangements familiar to fans. The eight-member orchestra, led by music director Alan Williams, delivers lush instrumentals throughout. Scherzinger and Francis' duet of "The Perfect Year" is reenvisioned as a soft rocker with R&B vibes. "Sunset Boulevard" rocks, which perfectly suits Francis' voice; here, he stands still, rather than his usual stroll through New York City streets. In both arrangements, Justin Rothberg's electric guitar shines. To bookend this performance, Scherzinger's expansive voice commands the stage in "With One Look" and in a blistering rendition of "As If We Never Said Goodbye."

Grupo Frontera: Tiny Desk Concert
Grupo Frontera: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 2,128 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

Anamaria Sayre | April 24, 2025
Grupo Frontera, which was headlining backyard bailes well before stadium shows, feels perfectly made for Tiny Desk. Beneath the glow of fluorescent office lights and backed against trinket-stuffed shelves, the match feels divinely ordained.

Normally, jazzy vocal trills and norteño cumbia rhythms are star-crossed lovers, but not at the Tiny Desk. At the center of a pop-infused reinvigoration of traditional Mexican sounds, the members of Grupo Frontera are masters of unlikely pairings. Mega-producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera discovered Grupo Frontera at a quinceanera in his hometown, enthralled by the band's authenticity. He encouraged the band's Texas-bred beats, killer melodies and contemporary lyrics.

There's no better space to highlight the impressive musicality of the group and stunning vocals of Payo Solis than in a stripped down setting. "Yo nací pa' querer a la que no me quiere (I was born to love the one who doesn't love me)," Payo coos. But it's hard to feel heartbroken when desamor sounds so smooth.

The Cast of Buena Vista Social Club: Tiny Desk Concert
The Cast of Buena Vista Social Club: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 31 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

Felix Contreras | May 27, 2025
Based on real-life events and people, Buena Vista Social Club features many characters and lots of great Cuban music. It takes such skill to reflect music of a bygone era, even more to sound fresh and vibrant night after night for months at a time. Scaled down for the Tiny Desk, the show is no less magical.

Before it was a Broadway musical racking up Tony Award nominations, the Buena Vista Social Club was a second chance. After the Cuban Revolution, many of the country's beloved musicians were lost to time, but in 1996, an ensemble was formed to reclaim their spotlight. To tell their story, the musical goes back and forth between the 1940s and the recording sessions that produced a masterpiece.

After the band warms up the Tiny Desk crowd with "El Cuarto de Tula," we meet young versions of the central characters: Compay Segundo (Da'Von Moody), Ibrahim Ferrer (Wesley Wray) and Omara Portuondo (Isa Antonetti) — their harmonies shine together on "La Negra Tomasa." Antonetti takes on the bolero-son standard "Lágrimas Negras." We also meet the older version of Ferrer, played by Mel Semé, for "Candela." Marco Ramirez, who wrote the book for Buena Vista Social Club, is our emcee for this performance, guiding us through the story.

The secret sauce is, of course, the music. These are the foundational building blocks of what has made Cuban music so popular before and after the revolution in 1959. Some of the best musicians in NYC who have experience with classic Cuban music are in this production. Buena Vista Social Club is a living, breathing and deeply grooving homage to the era, the music and the island.

Ruby Ibarra, 2025 Tiny Desk Contest Winner: Tiny Desk Concert
Ruby Ibarra, 2025 Tiny Desk Contest Winner: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 6 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

Elle Mannion | May 29, 2025
We received nearly 7,500 entries from independent artists across the country for the Tiny Desk Contest. That’s a record for the project, now in its 11th year, which has catapulted the careers of artists like Grammy winners Fantastic Negrito and Tank and the Bangas. Now we have a new star: Ruby Ibarra, a Filipina American rapper from the Bay Area. Ibarra’s Contest entry, “Bakunawa,” stunned this year’s panel of judges with its multilingual, intergenerational band and passionate emcee.

When arriving at the Tiny Desk, Ibarra was poised, gracious and a little reserved. We could tell she was taking in the moment that she would later call “surreal.” But as soon as she got situated behind the Desk, she locked in.

Community and culture are two guiding forces in Ibarra’s music. She put together an all-Filipino band for this performance, which includes R&B singer Ouida and members of Pinay Voltron and Astralogik, plus rock legend June Millington. But beyond these musicians, Ibarra’s crew runs deep; our office was packed with the artists’ friends and family.

On “Bakunawa,” a song about Filipino folklore and motherhood, Ibarra performs in English, Tagalog and Bisaya, switching effortlessly between the three languages from one verse to the next. On “7000 Miles,” she raps about her and her family’s experiences as immigrants. “My mom will make it in America” is a verse she repeats while looking into the teary eyes of her mother, who sits front row in the audience with a box of tissues. At the end of “Someday,” Ibarra changes the song’s refrain from “Mama, we gon’ make it here someday” to “Mama, we gon’ make it here today.”

Between flows, Ibarra introduces herself and makes a statement: “Being human is not illegal. Immigrants have been here, lived here, worked here. And this immigrant is here. From Tacloban City, Philippines, all the way to Washington, D.C., my name is Ruby Ibarra.”

Amerie: Tiny Desk Concert
Amerie: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 126 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums that have shaped the course of music and culture.

Alanté Serene | June 6, 2025
When Amerie arrived at the Tiny Desk, her enthusiastic energy and bright smile was an instant mood boost. The warm entrance felt fitting for an artist whose music embodies the soul of summer: bold percussion, breezy vocals and the feeling of endless possibilities.

When her sop****re album Touch dropped in 2005, it introduced a national audience to the infectious rhythms of go-go. Rooted in Washington, D.C., go-go is known for its layered percussion, funky basslines and live instrumentation made to hype the crowd. These sounds pulse through Amerie's music and helped to make "1 Thing" a standout in a year overflowing with R&B hits.

Amerie, who once lived in Washington, D.C. for several years, returns to the city with a reimagined set accompanied by go-go legends Backyard Band. Together, they open the show with songs from her debut album All I Have, including "Talkin' to Me" and the quintessential summer anthem "Why Don't We Fall in Love." She eases into her latest single, "Mine," and delivers a fan-favorite "I Just Died," before introducing a new rendition of "Rolling Down My Face" that you'll want to hear all the time from now on. By the time "Talkin' About" kicks in, Amerie is in full dance mode. When "1 Thing" closes out the set, she steps from behind the Desk to join the dance party, turning the performance into a celebration.

Wiz Khalifa: Tiny Desk Concert

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums that have shaped the course of music and culture.

Bobby Carter | June 10, 2025
Wiz Khalifa’s Kush & Orange Juice came out 15 years ago. To honor the anniversary, the Pittsburgh emcee assembled a group of Tiny Desk veterans, Pennsylvania natives and his DJ to reimagine highlights from the classic mixtape, plus tracks from Kush & Orange Juice 2, its similar, yet more mature follow-up.

Something was happening during the entire show and lots of us in the room could feel it. We were waiting for him to engage with us, but he didn’t. I stepped in after a few songs to remind him that it was OK to do so — still, nothing. But then, after “Crime Bud and Women,” Wiz spoke to the audience for the first and only time, wiping away tears: “You made me cry. F*** y’all!”

I can muster up a few guesses as to why the emotion overflowed. Wiz had a host of family and friends present in this very intimate setting, including his father. And he did tell me how much he loves performing. But honestly, this sonic masterpiece was good enough to hit the tear ducts.

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums that have shaped the course of music and culture.

Bobby Carter | June 2, 2025
Bay Area ambassador E-40 moves with the energy of an up-and-coming emcee, but he's been around a minute. To put it 40 Water's way: "I've been doing this since Kermit the Frog was a pollywog!" Our biggest hurdle to clear was packing in three decades of music at the Tiny Desk, but 40 Fonzarelli and his band clocked weeks of rehearsal to make sure this office was rockin'.

E-40's sop****re solo album In a Major Way dropped in 1995, one of the most competitive years in hip-hop history, with certified classics dropping weekly by the likes of 2Pac, Mobb Deep, Goodie Mob, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon and GZA. Straightforward and plain has never been E-40's nature, and that left-of-center spit has been the thing that has sustained his illustrious entertainment career.

At the Desk, Charlie Hustle sets things off with "Da Bumble" from In a Major Way and continues to bounce through a catalog of big hits sprinkled with nods to his day ones. Producer Lil Jon brought him back to the mainstream in the early 2000s with "Tell Me When to Go," "U and Dat" and "Snap Yo Fingers," while TikTok injected new life in "Choices (Yup)" and introduced him to Gen Z. "I'm on my fourth wind!" 40 tells us. No lies told.

SET LIST

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums that have shaped the course of music and culture.

Ashley Pointer | June 13, 2025
CeCe Winans' voice transcends genre, race and generations — something incredibly rare in the gospel and Christian music realms. Her Tiny Desk concert, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of her solo debut Alone in His Presence, is a moving journey through the many eras of her monumental career.

Winans laughed when she told me, "Ashley, you had me working today!" She dusted off songs she hadn't performed in decades to craft this moment. (And that's without even touching the groundbreaking work she did alongside her brother BeBe Winans.) From the joyous call and response of "Pray" to the crowd's audible gasp at the opening line of "Alabaster Box" to the heartfelt "Goodness of God" singalong, this performance isn't just nostalgic, it's a reminder of Winans' enduring spiritual and cultural impact. She is one of the most decorated gospel artists of all time — witness a living legend take the Tiny Desk to church.

Stanley Clarke: Tiny Desk Concert
Stanley Clarke: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 4 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums that have shaped the course of music and culture.

Mitra I. Arthur | June 17, 2025
Once the Tiny Desk logo fades away, one of the things you'll notice is a wall of amps. Robust sound has always been a hallmark of bassist Stanley Clarke's musicality; he reminded our audio team not only to pay attention to what the soundboard says but also if it sounds good.

Clarke's storied career has been awash with showcases in his virtuosity on the acoustic and electric basses. He's worked with fellow music titans like Chick Corea, George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty and Al Di Meola, and has scored for film and television. From 1974-1976, Clarke dropped a series of solo albums ("Stanley Clarke," "Journey to Love" and "School Days") that would herald his status as a force in music and foreshadow his 2022 designation as an NEA Jazz Master.

Indicative of his passion for spotlighting young musicians, Clarke's latest ensemble, 4EVER (a callback to his band Return to Forever), features saxophonist Emilio Modeste, guitarist Colin Cook, drummer Jeremiah Collier, violinist Evan Garr and keyboardist Cameron Graves.

Opening the set is "Song to John" from 1975's "Journey to Love," with Graves and Cook proving they're more than up to the task laid before them. "Yesterday Princess," from Clarke's 1974 self-titled album, gives violinist Garr the chance to shine as his fingers dance over the fingerboard. The performance moves into the electric realm with 2003's "1, 2, to the Bass," a track that manages to be both smooth (hat tip to Modeste) and funky at the same time. Collier's toms build up to the entry of Clarke at work as they close with one of his biggest hits, "School Days." A little over 50 years since his solo debut, Clarke reminds the audience that there are still new ways to be dazzled by the innovative and solid fullness of his instrument.

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings: Tiny Desk Concert
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 7 Bekeken • 1 jaar geleden

Lars Gotrich | July 2, 2025
Two guitars. Two voices. Fifteen years since the duo last stopped by the Tiny Desk, not much has changed in how they present themselves, right down to their preferred guitar tuner. This is how it's been, with some variation, for over three decades, in the timeless music of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.

And, yet, everything changes when you listen deeper and live longer. Behind the Desk, facing each other, the ballad "Empty Trainload of Sky" achieves an auditory illusion as their guitars chug and vocal harmonies swirl surrealistic imagery across a classic American canvas. "Lawman" could be about a corrupt politician a hundred years ago or yesterday. "Hashtag," a tribute to the late Guy Clark, is, at turns, tragicomic ("Singers like you and I are only news when we die") and existential ("When will we become ourselves?"). These songs, from last year's Woodland, endure change with grace, leaning into small moments in order to make the outsized ones seem surmountable.

Welch and Rawlings close with "Revelator," a mystic brew of apocalyptic prophecy and personal history that marked a significant leveling-up for the duo when it was originally released in 2001. Behind the Desk, their simmering harmonies bloom as much as they wither, only to burst through Rawlings' guitar solos that range from reflective to ravaging. As the song ends, Welch and Rawlings bend toward their mics — and each other — not only to let the last chord ring out, but to let the feeling reverberate.

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums that have shaped the course of music and culture.

Alanté Serene | June 27, 2025
The facets of Rico Nasty’s artistry seem nearly endless. Four years after her electrifying Tiny Desk (home) concert, the rapper/rager/rockstar finally brings her full force to the actual Desk. One thing’s for sure: This concert will surprise you.

Rico performs in front of a packed house of Nasty Mob members, family, friends and hometown supporters. “There is a connection that I have with you guys,” the DMV native tells the crowd. “It just makes me feel very safe.” Fueled by that assurance, Rico powers through a set that’s as layered as her catalog.

Five years after her debut studio album, Nightmare Vacation, Rico has evolved. Her latest project, LETHAL, finds her fully confident in the lane she’s built, blending vulnerability and attitude the way only she can. At the Desk, Rico lets each side of herself shine: from explosive tracks like “SMOKE BREAK,” to a smooth, reimagined version of “ON THE LOW,” to the tender resonance of “SMILE,” a song dedicated to her son. Rico delivers a carefully curated show that highlights every corner of her musical identity while leaving her mark on the iconic space.
