Tank: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 3 Ansichten • 3 Jahre vor

NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Ashley Pointer | June 14, 2023
It's practically a sin to not have Durrell "Tank" Babbs on your spiciest playlist — he's penned some of the steamiest records in R&B. If you've been following our Black Music Month takeover, it's likely you spotted Tank accompanying Babyface, the love maestro himself, on background vocals. In his own concert, the veteran crooner and R&B scholar performed a 14-song medley of passionate love songs and bedroom bops from across his 23 years-long career in music, and turned the Tiny Desk into "the big, nasty Desk."

This doesn't happen without warning: "Some of these songs make you wanna make up. Some of these songs make you wanna breakup and some of these songs make you want to participate in various sexual activities," Tank declared before traversing his catalog. Backed by the phenomenal Florida-based MVP Band, along with a trio of famed background vocalists — singer-songwriter-actor Luke James, singer Brooke Valentine and songwriter/producer Lonny Bereal — we got a taste of the songs that not only established Tank as a pillar in R&B, but hits he wrote and produced for other notable artists such as Jamie Foxx, Omarion, Marques Houston and LeToya Luckett.

Full of buttery smooth runs and yearning melodies (along with the occasional, witty HR joke), Tank's Tiny Desk concert is a stellar display of how powerful the allure of R&B can be, and perhaps a masterclass for any youngin' learning how to woo.

V V Brown - Twisted (Official Music video) Hotney 5 Ansichten • 3 Jahre vor

“Sometimes I feel like I'm a sculpture standing strong but far from you. You look at me and admire everything but still own what I do. You take my soul, my culture, then you wrap it in economy.
You leave me on the side to die then step on my harmony ”

GRAMMY®-Nominated songwriter, artist, mother, activist, journalist and teacher VV Brown who has just returned from a 10 year hiatus, where she attended to her mental health and focused on raising her two young children, follows her recent thought provoking anthem “Black British”, with an equally powerful second single “Twisted”.

“Twisted” was inspired by James Baldwin’s seminal work I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, and the music of V V’s favourite artist, Erykah Badu.
Though Brown was able to speak truth to power in a number of ways, including writing for the Guardian about racial issues and lecturing young Goldsmiths students about the value of protecting their experimental art, she felt compelled, once again, to create her own sociology-focused music. Like ‘Black British” and the forthcoming album, Twisted draws from the disciplines of essay writing and journalism to reveal its message and its feeling through the artwork, the lyrics and the sound.

“Twisted” delves into the implications and the results of cultural appropriation and lays bare the blatant theft of black culture. Drawing from Raekua, an award-winning cinematographer's footage, V V reproduces the content in order to bring awareness to the power dynamic between those who can appropriate and those who are appropriated from.

The mission?
To empower in reclaiming back the culture.

Artist, mother, activist, journalist and teacher V V Brown, who took a 6 year hiatus from her musical career to attend to her mental health and focus on raising her two young children, makes her very welcome return with the release of her uplifting, thought-provoking anthem “Black British”. “

“Black British” is a bold declaration of this singular artist’s intent as she begins her fearless new journey with an anthem that speaks boldly about identity and the conflicts of this cultural experience.

"Deep in the Willow" lyrics
Deep in the willow
Hidden from grace
Succumb to insecurity
Your final resting place
Crafting your perfect world Ignoring total truth
You'll die alone
There's only room for you
True colors shown
And I'm not impressed

A KING TO NONE Atop your throne you will die alone
A KING TO NONE Your greed lies deeper than blood
A KING TO NONE Atop your throne you will die alone
A KING TO NONE Your greed lies deeper than blood

Deep in the willow you sink alone
Don't lose your balance on the fence
You're only swimming up stream
Tail tucked for the world to see
Living your life playing on both teams It all comes back around
The tables turn
A rat to most
To me less
True colors shown
And I'm not impressed

A KING TO NONE Atop your throne you will die alone
A KING TO NONE Your greed lies deeper than blood
A KING TO NONE A rat to most to me less
A KING TO NONE And I'm not impressed

Deep in the willow

"Everything is Quiet Now" lyrics
If I were god I'd blind the youth
The gnawing weight of our final night
To all the pain that hides in truth
Unwilling I have been fed to life
Bellowing for just a crumb
Static in the constant hum
To drink from life's flowing stream
Poisoned
Upon loss
Upon loss were reminded of hell
Existence of pain and free will
Denial A cancer that eats at the shell
Lost forever
Upon loss Lives denial
Upon loss How can I move on now?
Are you washed in the blood?
It sinks in its teeth it comes
for us all Are you washed in the blood?
It comes for me in the dead of night
In the dead of night I was visited by death again
Upon loss
Everything is quiet now

Nah, I'm not faking anymore.

I’m not freaking out
Just dare to suffer
I’m not freaking out
(say it loud, say it loud)
I’m not freaking out
I’m getting stronger
I’m not faking

Freak me out like
Dying inside, still tryna play it cool, though
Party’s so so, can’t hold it in, oh no

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

I’m not freaking out
Just dare to suffer
I’m not freaking out

Ah
I’m gonna stop faking
It’s okay to pa-panic
All eyes on me
they tryna see through me inside out

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

Nah
Time to mess up, ought to max up
Loose like a villain
Nah
You back me up, we back it up
Keep it mo-movin’

(say it loud, say it loud)
(say it loud, say it loud)

I’m not freaking out

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

I’m not freaking out
Just dare to suffer
I’m not freaking out
(say it loud, say it loud)
I’m not freaking out
I’m getting stronger
I’m not faking
