Rapper and singer .idk.'s acronym stands for Ignorantly Delivering Knowledge, a stage name he's used since he released his first mixtapes back in 2014. Since then, he's produced a multitude of albums and singles, including his newest album, "BRAVADO + INTiMO." Popular songs from that project are included in this infectious set. He also performs "SUPERNOVA (i)," which includes an interpolation of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly."

With a wide range of talents and influences, the rapper's music reflects a broad range of his life experiences. "A lot of people don't know I started making music in prison," IDK told the audience. "… whatever song was in my head, if I knew it, I would sing it, and that would be, like, entertainment for a lot of the other inmates and stuff," he continued. "So really, I started off singing and I got into this rap thing because that was where my heart was."

He demonstrates his musical versatility throughout the set. Starting with "24," a rap hit from his 2019 album, "Is He Real?," this Tiny Desk arrangement is infused with the rhythms of go-go, the official music of Washington, D.C. It's also a reflection of his early years growing up in the suburbs of the city. An outspoken critic of the criminal justice system, .idk. ends his set with "Mr. Police," a thoughtful, jazzy song that reinforces one of the key principles that drives him: the idea of opposing constructs, and that ignorance and knowledge are in contrast.

Many months ago, when Julia Bullock was mapping out her Tiny Desk appearance, the emails about repertoire started flying back and forth. She was meticulously stitching together seemingly disparate songs: some blues, folk, classical, some far off-the-beaten-path singer-songwriter material and a song she'd never sung in public, written for her wedding.

I've learned not to expect a tidy bouquet of German lieder when Bullock gives a recital. Yes, she tips her hat here to Schubert with a feisty rendition of "Rastlose Liebe," a two-minute tribute to restless love. Yet this concert spans 350 years, from Barbara Strozzi's 17th century lament "Che si può fare," sung with palpable foreboding, to the public premiere of "Love Liberates," by Nathaniel Stookey, to words by Maya Angelou.

Bullock has an affinity for Connie Converse, the enigmatic, mid-century singer-songwriter who mysteriously disappeared in 1974. "Talkin' Like You (Two Tall Mountains)" celebrates independence, while an abbreviated version of "I Have Considered the Lilies," turns a perky paean into a private supplication.

Bullock's meditative mixtape ends in safe haven, with Odetta's bluesy arrangement of "Going Home," a song rooted in Dvořák's "New World" Symphony. Bullock reaches into her burgundy lower register, and pianist Christian Reif depresses the soft pedal, to achieve maximum comfort.

These songs refract love in various tints, and further illustrate why Bullock is one of today's most discerning and expressive singers. Contemporary composers are particularly enamored, including John Adams, whose new opera Antony and Cleopatra Bullock will debut at the Metropolitan Opera in May.

We had to get an early start to figure out how to ergonomically squeeze all of Sandbox Percussion’s instruments behind the Tiny Desk.

The band deploys a surprisingly wide arsenal. The professionally-built instruments, like the bass drum and vibraphone, took up most of the Tiny Desk real estate. The smaller, unexpected instruments needed to be placed just right for easy access. There were metal plumbing pipes and wooden slats you can find at the hardware store, ordinary wine glasses from your kitchen, an old cigar box and an empty bourbon bottle.

The members of Sandbox Percussion have a longstanding relationship with composer Andy Akiho. They begin this set with a segment of Seven Pillars, an 80-minute piece Akiho wrote for the group, which was a 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist. It’s a supercharged, edge-of-the-seat performance where the sounds delight, the polyrhythms intertwine and mallets fly in a blur.

Then come the wine glasses. Remember, as a kid, how you annoyed your family by running your finger around the rim of a water glass at the dinner table? The Sandbox guys take this to an exquisite level in music by Viet Cuong. The glasses, tuned with varying levels of water, toll woozily, as if bells could get drunk. Later, they “sing” with otherworldly overtones, sounding better than any synthesizer.

As a bonus, Sandbox invites Akiho himself to join on steel drum for the mesmerizing final piece –- Akiho’s own Karakurenai, where interlocking beats groove like gamelan music, and delicious sounds emanate from bowed rice bowls, pipes and slabs of wood.

In the end, it was worth unloading all those amazing instruments to document one of today’s finest — and friendliest — percussion ensembles.
