Marc Bolan is best known as the frontman of T Rex. In the early 70s, he and the band led a musical movement known as glam rock, which combined heavy hooks with extravagant displays of fashion. T Rex would experience critical and commercial success in their native UK during this time and would also prove extremely influential in America. By 1977, following a brief commercial decline, the band were in the midst of a strong comeback, but Bolan would die in a serious car wreck at 29 years old. While the crash itself was undisputed, it turns out that the circumstances around the crash contrasted with what was first reported. That’s what we’ll discuss in today’s video.
Bolan was born Mark Feld on September 30th, 1947, in the east London borough of Hackney, to an English mother\ Ashkenazi Jewish father. Both parents came from a working-class background, with his mother operating a food stall on Berwick Street Market at the time, while his father was a truck driver. Although that meant that the family sometimes struggled to make ends meet, Bolan nonetheless had a happy childhood with his older brother Harry. Harry would comment on the time his brother’s larger-than-life presence took shape when he was five years old, recalling in the documentary Marc Bolan, The Final Word,
“He would adopt a frontman [persona] like Clark Kent and Superman, and his first one was Mighty Joe Young. He was the big gorilla and nobody could beat him. He [always had] a front, and ‘Marc Bolan’ was [one of them],” he’d say.
The family would relocate to Wimbledon, and it was at this point that Bolan was drawn to music. By age 9, his mother bought him his first guitar, and after a few years of simple strumming, he’d gradually become proficient by teaching himself how to play. According to Bolan, the 1956 film The Girl Can’t Help It, would fuel his ambitions for becoming a rockstar. Realizing that his instrument could supplement as a fashion accessory while he moved around, he’d take a cue from some of his rock n’ roll heroes, saying,
“I remember seeing Eddie Cochran. The way he held his guitar, unmoved, looked good. Little Richard put his foot on the piano, and I thought that was outrageous. I thought Elvis was the man, because he really used to wiggle his bum…and that influenced me incredibly. I was impressed with the fact that he always had a guitar [on him]. That, to me, was the ultimate showman thing, just sort of pushing it behind his back and throwing it around.”
By August 1965, the 18-year-old musician made inroads in the music industry, signing a contract with Decca Records under the moniker Marc Bowland. He’d then adopt a popular folk-rock sound similar to artists like Donovan and Bob Dylan, and materialize it with the help of session musicians, but his first two singles, “The Wizard'' and its follow-up in 1966, “The Third Degree,” failed to make any impact, which resulted in him being dropped from the label. He had also been changing the stylization of his name several times up to this point. In the book Marc Bolan: The Rise and Fall of a 20th Century Superstar, it’s said that the earliest instance involved changing the ‘k’ in his birthname, Mark Feld, to a ‘c’. As for how he’d eventually get to ‘Bolan’, the most common theory is stated by his brother Harry, who’d recall,
“Around this time, Mark was very friendly with the actor James Bolam. They fell out shortly afterwards, and I had a feeling it’s because Mark used his name as an inspiration.”
Actor Riggs O’Hara agreed, adding,
“Mark just changed the ‘m’ to an ‘n’… [and] liked the sound of it. He couldn’t understand why Jimmy was upset. He thought it was absolutely ridiculous that Jimmy thought he was going to be as big as Mark was. Mark always knew that he was going to be famous,” O’Hara would say.
By late 1966, things would start to look up for Bolan, as he’d successfully convinced legendary producer and manager Simon Napier-Bell to record him by himself with just his acoustic guitar. Napier-Bell soon became Bolan’s manager, and using his c

I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.

From 1996 to 2002 Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley lived a pretty reclusive life. If you’ve read either grunge is dead or everybody loves our town there’s a handful of pretty depressing stories about what layne was up to in his reclusive years and how his appearance had drastically changed from years of drug abuse. It was during this time, especially towards the tale end of his life that several of his musician friends and bandmates tried to help him get clean. That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video.

John Frusciante

It was around either 1999 or 2000 that, Bob Forrest and John Frusciante tried to help convince Layne Staley to get off drugs. Forrest would recount the story in his book Running with Monsters: A Memoir. Forrest who dealt with addiction previously became known as a person who could get through to addicts and Staley’s mom asked him for his help. Red Hot Chili Peppers john frusciante who was newly sober at the time didn’t think they could get through to staley, but joined Forrest anyways in visiting layne in his apartment in seattle.

Bob: “Hey Layne. What’s going on.”
Layne: “Nothing. I know why you’re here.”
Bob: “Your Mom’s worried, man. You don’t look too good.”
Layne: “I’m okay, though. Really.”
After leaving layne’s apartment forrest woul remark to frusciante in his book “I don’t think he’ll come out of this.” to which Frusciante responded, “It’s his life, man.”
Mark Lanegan
The former Screaming Trees frontman would talk to Rolling Stone and talked about getting sober in the late 90’s and tryingto help Layne. He would tell Rolling Stone The first time I saw him (referring to Layne) after I’d gotten clean, I’d been clean a year. I’m pretty sure that [Alice in Chains’] Jerry [Cantrell] and Mike Inez flew me up to Seattle because they were unable to get into his house. He had a camera and lived in the penthouse of this condo. So whenever anybody from that camp would come to see him, he would just ignore it. Jerry and Mike knew that when he saw me, he would let me in. I went along with that, and I also wanted him to see that I was clean, that it was possible to get clean, that his prediction that I would never be able to do it had failed [laughs]. Hopefully, maybe, it would give him the idea that he, himself, could do it. But he didn’t want to do it.
When I got there, I said, “Hey, man, it’s been a while. I’ve been clean for more than 12 months.” And he was like, “No, you weren’t, man. You just left, like, two months ago.” His sense of time had warped. And he wasn’t buying the truth from me. I remember him saying at that point, “I always just keep thinking I’m gonna get that same feeling I got the first time again.”Lanegan would go on to say that he hoped a medical emergency would force layne to change his ways but his medical emergency ended up being his death.
Finally his bandmates more specifically drummer Sean Kinney and Mike Inez tried to help Layne. Inez would reveal in the book how himself and Mark Lanegan would go beat on his door to talk to Layne but to no avail. with Kinney recalling Kinney said: “It got to a point where he’d kept himself so locked up, both physically and emotionally. I kept trying to make contact. Three times a week, like clockwork, I’d call him, but he’d never answer. Every time I was in the area, I was up in front of his place yelling for him. Even if you could get into his building, he wasn’t going to open the door. You’d phone, and he wouldn’t answer. You couldn’t just kick the door in and grab him, though there were so many times I thought about doing that. But if someone won’t help themselves, what, really, can anyone else do?”
It was also briefly mentioned in the book Alice in Chains the untold story that Krist Novaselic of Nirvana would sometimes take food over to Layne’s house. Hoping to save the frontman after losing his friend Kurt Cobain
In the book grunge is dead krisha augerot who worked for pearl jam singled out Alice in CHains manager and Chris Cornell’s wife at the time as being the person who tried to help Layne the most straighten out his personal life recalling “she was a constant in his life trying to get him clean unfortunately he just never accepted it.”

========= 1916 LYRICS ==========

Sixteen years old when I went to the war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Chasing my days down to zero,
And I marched and I fought and I bled and I died,
And I never did get any older,
But I knew at the time that a year in the line,
Was a long enough life for a soldier,

We all volunteered, and we wrote down our names,
And we added two years to our ages,
Eager for life and ahead of the game,
Ready for history's pages,
And we brawled and we fought and we whored 'til we stood,
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,
A thirst for the Hun, we were food for the gun,
And that's what you are when you're soldiers,

I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees,
Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother,
And I fell by his side, and that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother and she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame,
And the day’s not half over and ten thousand slain,
And now there's nobody remembers our names
And that's how it is for a soldier.

========= Historic Fact ==========

Resulting in around 300,000 fatalities, the Battle of the Somme is considered one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts of the First World War and in human history. The battle, which was fought between British and French forces versus German forces, kicked off on July 1, 1916, and ended on November 18 that same year.

LYRICS
At this point you gon' have to match my hustle (That's a fact)
Matter of fact, you gon' have to beat my hustle
Inspire me to elevate mine
Welcome to the upside, let's keep each other up
If you can do that, then you could come see about us, ha, ha
(You feel me Mary) Look

Yeah
You gotta come see 'bout me (For real)
If you really want the true, then ask me 'bout me (For real)
And if you really want the smoke, they roll tree 'bout me (That gas)
You know I keep a young gunna pushin' P 'bout me (Slat)
You know God don't play, he keep it G 'bout me (Don't play with him)
Hope you hoes burn your lips tryna get tea 'bout me
If I said two o' clock, it's gon' be 'bout three
Might be fashionably late, but I leave out flee
Come on, dog (Come on, dog)
I gotta keep my collar clean (Yeah)
You niggas couldn't be me if it was Halloween (Ah)
I see a lot of eye candy, sour power streams (I see)
But I need soul food, turkey, mac, collard greens
Yeah, me and Mary in the yams
White Yaris, had to pull up on Mary in a little 'Lamb (Skrr)
Chilly night, I'm rockin' Amiri and leather pants
And watch Puff's chefs sprinkle Rosemary over the lamb (Nice)
He told her no way, but tell José I got her (I got you, baby)
On the upside, baddies don't pay for nada (Nothing)
Rosé colada (Yeah), Dolce and Prada
Mary in Booby Trap giving Monét Tejada (Woo)
This is powerful, we got Diddy back outside
This is big money, it's like Citibank outside
Tell them boys who got coins bring they piggy banks outside
And come see about us, what would it be without us? Huh

Come, come and see about me
You know I'm really in a good mood
I bought a coast for you
Match that so we can have two
Come, come and see about me
You know I'm really in a good mood
You make a move, I make a move
We make a movie

'Cause we got some things to do tonight
And you got a point to prove your pride
We bring color to black and white
What we just did could make a life
'Cause we got some things to do tonight

Something 'bout your loving, always keeps me jumping
Pop one out the oven, watch me bake
When at your best, can never go wrong
You take the lead and keep it up front
Talking about a lifetime, only
Yeah

Come, come and see about me
You know I'm really in a good mood
I bought a coast for you
Match that so we can have two
Come, come and see about me
You know I'm really in a good mood
You make a move, I make a move
We make a movie

'Cause we got some things to do tonight (Got some things to do)
And you got a point to prove your pride (You, you got a point to prove, baby)
We bring color to black and white (Black and white)
What we just did could make a life (A life)
'Cause we got some things to do tonight

Ooh-oh, baby (Tonight)
I got some things to do, oh-oh, oh
(To do tonight, oh, oh, oh)
Black and white, make a life

Lyrics:

I can’t hide myself
I don’t expect you to understand
I just hope I can explain
What it’s like to be a man
It’s a lonely road, and they don’t care about what you know
It’s not about how you feel but what you provide inside that home

Yeah
I know this life can really beat you down
You wanna scream but you won’t make a sound
Got so much weight that you've been holding but won’t show any emotion
As a man it goes unspoken
That we can’t cry when life gets hard
Unconditional love’s for women, children, and dogs
We know that we just have to play our parts
And don’t nobody give a d*mn about our broken hearts, yeah

As a man we gotta pave our way
Our only function is to work and slave
There’s no respect for you if you ain’t payed
You’re disregarded as a human and you can’t complain
And if you ever make it up and actually reach that place
And find a woman that you love and give her your last name
You’ll feel the things that you provide is only why she stays
And when you try to explain you’ll say…

I can’t hide myself
I don’t expect you to understand
I just hope I can explain
What it’s like to be a man
It’s a lonely road and they don’t care about what you know
It’s not bout how you feel but what you provide inside that home

Don’t give up, keep fightin’
As a man our son(sun) is our horizon
And our father’s actions play a role
And we end up like ‘em
So they can’t let us see them hurt
‘Cause we’ll embody what they do
And start a generational curse
No wonder most men are so depressed
All the things that they can’t express
They go to war
get thrown on the shelf
Then go back to war with their mental health
Then grab that bottle and ask for help
Try to pull themselves out of h*ll
Then fall back down and then realize that they gon’ have to do it themselves

It’s the circle of life
As a man you provide
They don’t know what you’re worth ‘til the day that you die
And that’s when they start cryin’
Then move on to a man to confide in

That’s why we feel
We can’t hide ourselves
We don’t expect you to understand
We just hope we can explain
What it’s like to be a man
It’s a lonely road and you don’t care about what we know
It’s not about how we feel but what we provide inside that home

That home
It’s not about how we feel but what we provide inside that home
