Documentary film, which explores how Prince - showman, artist, enigma - revolutionised the perception of black music in the 1980s with worldwide hits such as 1999, Kiss, Raspberry Beret and Alphabet Street. He became a global sensation with the release of the Oscar-winning, semi-autobiographical movie Purple Rain in 1984, embarking on an incredible journey of musical self-discovery that continued right up to his passing in April 2016, aged 57.

From the psychedelic Around the World in a Day to his masterpiece album Sign O' the Times and experiments with hip-hop and jazz, Prince was one of most ambitious and prolific songwriters of his generation. He tested the boundaries of taste and decency with explicit sexual lyrics and stage shows during his early career and in the 1990s fought for ownership of his name and control of his music, played out in a public battle with his former label, Warner. Highly regarded as one of the most flamboyant live performers ever, Prince was a controversial and famously elusive creative force.

He became a global sensation with the release of the Oscar-winning, semi-autobiographical movie Purple Rain in 1984, embarking on an incredible journey of musical self-discovery that continues to this day. His impressive array of songs includes some of the most iconic sounds of the 80’s and 90’s – “When Doves Cry” (1984), “Kiss” (1986), “Cream” (1991), “Raspberry Beret” (1985), “Purple Rain” (1984),” The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” (1994), “Sign ‘O’ the Times” (1987), “Little Red Corvette” (1983), “7” (1993), “Alphabet St.” (1998) and “1999” (1983).

Contributors include Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson, Paisley Park label president Alan Leeds, hip-hop legend Chuck D and Prince 'Mastermind' and UK soul star Beverley Knight.

Standing in the shadows of motown

Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002), Documentary - Оставаясь в тени Мотауна (2002)

Documentary about the Funk Brothers, a group of Detroit musicians who backed up dozens of Motown artists.
Director: Paul Justman

Storyline
In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period they were the heartbeat on every hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers. Forty-one years after they played their first note on a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story, with the help of archival footage, still photos, narration, interviews, re-creation scenes, 20 Motown master tracks, and twelve new live performances of Motown classics with the Brothers backing up contemporary performers.

This is Robin S with her 1993 US top five hit “Show Me Love”. It's one of the greatest house-pop songs ever. Just to make things clear this is not Robyn with a “y”. The Swedish pop sensation who also had a 90's top ten hit with a song called “Show Me Love”. The latter Robyn is one of the most important pop stars of the last three decades. Any female pop artist to have survived and thrived into their thirties is an impressive feat, most being chewed out after their first album. But Robyn got chewed out, and then went on to do better than ever. She went from pop puppet to critically acclaimed indie `darling. As The Guardian clickbait-titled their 2018 article: “Robyn transformed pop music”, and they aren't wrong. Everyone from Britney Spears to Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Teagan and Sara, and Ariana Grande have taken bits and pieces from Robyn's sound, persona and work-ethic. All this plus, Robyn's “Dancing on My Own” is one of the most perfect pop singles of the twenty-tens. But who is Robyn? How did she get here? And how did a 30-something Euro-pop artist outdo the greatest faces and producers in modern pop?

2006 Rock-doc

Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, recording at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley, on rhythm acoustic guitar, and accompanied by lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined to complete the lineup of Presley's classic quartet and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage him for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA Victor single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the United States. Within a year, RCA would sell ten million Presley singles. With a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records, Presley became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll; though his performative style and promotion of the then-marginalized sound of African-Americans led to him being widely considered a threat to the moral well-being of the White American youth.

Having sold over 400 million records worldwide, Presley is recognized as the best-selling solo music artist of all time by Guinness World Records with sales estimated by various sources up to 500 million – 1 billion. He was commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, rhythm & blues, adult contemporary, and gospel. Presley won three Grammy Awards, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame. He holds several records, including the most RIAA-certified gold and platinum albums, the most albums charted on the Billboard 200, the most number-one albums by a solo artist on the UK Albums Chart, and the most number-one singles by any act on the UK Singles Chart. In 2018, Presley was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Presley holds the records for most songs charting in Billboard's top 40 and top 100. Presley's rankings for top ten and number-one hits vary depending on how the double-sided "Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel" and "Don't/I Beg of You" singles, which precede the inception of Billboard's unified Hot 100 chart, are analyzed. According to Whitburn's analysis, Presley holds the record with 38, tying with Madonna; per Billboard's current assessment, he ranks second with 36. Whitburn and Billboard concur that the Beatles hold the record for most number-one hits with 20, and that Mariah Carey is second with 18. Whitburn has Presley also with 18, and thus tied for second; Billboard has him third with 17. Presley retains the record for cumulative weeks at number one: alone at 80, according to Whitburn and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; tied with Carey at 79, according to Billboard. He holds the record for most number-one singles on the UK chart with 21 and singles reaching the top ten with 76.

As an album artist, Presley is credited by Billboard with the record for the most albums charting in the Billboard 200: 129, far ahead of second-place Frank Sinatra's 82. He also holds the record for the most time spent at number one on the Billboard 200: 67 weeks. In 2015 and 2016, two albums setting Presley's vocals against music by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, If I Can Dream and The Wonder of You, both reached number one in the United Kingdom. This gave him a new record for number-one UK albums by a solo artist with 13, and extended his record for the longest span between number-one albums by anybody—Presley had first topped the British chart in 1956 with his self-titled debut.

Lyrics:
Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

I look at you
You look at me
And then we smile
Knowing what we`re in for

The kiss that you give
Makes me want you more and more
We`re having the time of our lives

And then you say that
I will always be the one
Someone right for your dreams at night

I wish we could be
Right here
Right now, always
Touching and loving you so right

Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

Seeing you here by my side
Words come out that I can`t hide
You`re an image of my dreams

I need you
And you need me too
As long as we keep holding on
I`ll be there for you

[Repeat Chorus:]
Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight
Love
Your body
Your beauty
I want more

I want you to
Hold me, love me, squeeze me
I need you to
Touch me, please me, tease me

I want you to
Hold me, love me, squeeze me
I need you to
Touch me, please me, tease me

Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

Just want to hold you tight
All day
All night
Just want to hold you tight

Lyrics:
I got a new dress
Just to meet you downtown
Will you walk me through the park just to show it off
I can pull my hair back in that tight way that you like
If you wrap me in your arms and you never stop

Heart beats so loud that it’s drowning me out
Living in an April shower
You’re pouring down
Baby drown me out

You’re just like a river
You’re just like a river
You go on forever
You’re just like a river

Blowing bubbles in the bath
I can’t stop from thinking lately
You could be the one
Have the honor of my babies
Hope they have your eyes and that crooked smile
Was a desert before I met you
I was in a drought

Heart beats so loud that it’s drowning me out
Living in an April shower
You’re pouring down
Baby drown me out

You’re just like a river
You’re just like a river
You go on forever
You’re just like a river

You’re never running dry

I feel you everywhere
Your face is all in my hair
Covered up in your sweat
It turns me on that you care, baby
Your love, it flows just like a river

You’re just like a river (That’s what you are)

You’re just like a river (Heart beats so loud that it’s drowning me out)
You’re just like a river (Living in an April shower)
You go on forever (You’re pouring down, baby drown me out)
You’re just like a river
