Lelee Lyons: Starting SWV, Dealing with Success, Wanting to End Life, Celebrating 30 Years of SWV Hotney 5 Vues • 4 années depuis

LeAnne “Lelee” Lyons is a Bronx, NY native who currently resides in Atlanta, Ga. As a young girl, and mother of two by the age of 17, Lelee was determined to change the way people looked at her. Feeling like a failure and disappointment to her mother, “I wanted to do something in my life that would make everybody forget about my failures", Lelee said—and that she did.

In 1992, Lelee became the visionary behind the 3x platinum, Grammy-nominated supergroup we know today as Sisters With Voices (SWV). Along with her group members, Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, and Tamara “Taj” George, the trio went on to sell almost 30 million records to date, with songs like: "Weak", "Right Here", and "I'm So IntoYou" just to name a few. But, with all the accomplishments, notoriety, and monetary blessings achieved in the entertainment industry, Lelee still felt empty and unfulfilled.

After realizing the real blessing would be in blessing others through her life experiences and pain, Lelee would dedicate her life bringing awareness to “Teen Pregnancy Prevention”, “Domestic Violence”, and Child Sexual Abuse—all of which she experienced as a young girl. "Music literally saved my life", Lelee says.

Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins: Teddy Riley, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige Hotney 3 Vues • 4 années depuis

The Darkchild instinctively knows how to showcase the best attributes of each artist that he works with. CEO of his Darkchild Productions, Inc., Jerkins has been responsible, through his numerous hit productions, for over 170 million in record sales worldwide.

Born the youngest son of a minister father and choir director mother in Pleasantville, New Jersey in 1977, Jerkins began taking classical piano lessons as a child and combined that with the gospel music that he heard in church. Rodney's God‐given gifts quickly blossomed, as the young phenomenon diligently worked on his music and began recording demos for local talent. When New Jack Swing's Teddy Riley came across one of those early demos and opened the first door, Rodney's career took off like a rocket. Subsequently, his first professional writing and producing job came in 1994, for an artist named Casserine and at the tender age of 15, he and his brother, Fred Jerkins III, wrote and produced his gospel rap album, "On The Move." Since that time and continuously into present day, the Jerkins discography reads like a Who's Who of Hit Music.

In 1997, Jerkins continued his ascent to legend status by working with Mary J. Blige; he co‐wrote, arranged and produced five songs for her four‐time platinum CD, "Share My World," including the hit single "I Can Love You." That year, Billboard magazine touted him as one of the hottest R&B producers in the country, and again bestowed that moniker on him in 1999. He re‐teamed with Blige in 2006, with his production of her huge hit, "Enough Cryin," from her record‐setting CD, "The Breakthrough."

Rodney's 2006 production of Beyoncé’s Number One smash "Deja Vu," dominated the airwaves and garnered him another Grammy nod in the process. A testament to its greatness and his genius, the perennial, memorable tune was highlighted during Beyoncé’s 2008 Grammy Awards telecast performance.

Happily married to Lifestyle Music artist, Joy Enriquez, Rodney is also the father of four children, Rodney David Jerkins III, Heavenly Joy, Hannah Joy and Royal David Jerkins in Los Angeles. Jerkins also produced her latest Contemporary Christian album and debut of his Christian label, Lifestyle Music, titled “The Call” in partnership with Capitol Christian. He says "this is what the world needs right now, and we are happy to be the ones that God is using to deliver it."

A devout Christian with strong moral values, Rodney has not forgotten his roots in the church, nor does he compromise in order to conform to today's music landscape; instead, he consistently uses his myriad talents to shape groundbreaking music on his own terms.

Recently, Rodney has completed work on Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Jessi J, Justin Bieber, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Alicia Keys, and Sam Smith.

The sensual and very emotional single "Get It Together" gave the album its third hit and reached 10 on the Billboard charts.

Additionally, the album earned them a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award in 1997. It sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. 702 served as the opening act for New Edition, Keith Sweat, and Blackstreet during the 1996-97 New Edition reunion tour. After going gold with their debut album, the self-titled album "702" was released in 1999. The first single "Where My Girls At" peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained in the top 20 for more than 30 weeks, which earned 702 an American Music Award nomination. The album went on to sell over 1,000,000 copies worldwide certifying its platinum status.

RICK JAMES

James Ambrose Johnson Jr. (February 1, 1948 – August 6, 2004), better known by his stage name Rick James, was an American singer-songwriter, musician and record producer. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, James began his musical career in his teenage years. He was in various bands before entering the U.S. Navy Reserve to avoid being drafted into the army. In 1964, James deserted to Toronto, Canada, where he formed the rock band the Mynah Birds, who eventually signed a recording deal with Motown Records in 1966. James's career with the group halted after military authorities discovered his whereabouts and eventually convicted him of desertion related charges. He served several months in jail. After being released, James moved to California, where he started a variety of rock and funk groups in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

After forming the locally popular Stone City Band in his hometown of Buffalo in 1977, James finally found success as a recording artist after signing with Motown's Gordy Records, releasing the album Come Get It! in 1978 which produced the hits "You & I" and "Mary Jane". In 1981, James released his most successful album, Street Songs, which included career-defining hits such as "Give It to Me Baby" and "Super Freak", the latter song becoming his biggest crossover single, mixing elements of funk, disco, rock and new wave. James was also known for his soulful ballads such as "Fire & Desire" and "Ebony Eyes". In addition, James also had a successful career as a songwriter and producer for other artists including Teena Marie, the Mary Jane Girls, the Temptations, Eddie Murphy and Smokey Robinson.

James's mainstream success had peaked by the release of his album Glow in 1985 and his appearance on the popular TV show, The A-Team. His subsequent album releases failed to sell as well as their predecessors. Rapper MC Hammer sampled James's "Super Freak" for his 1990 hit, "U Can't Touch This" which won Best R&B Song at the 1991 Grammy Awards. James received his only Grammy for composing the song.[1] By the early 1990s, James's career was hampered by his drug addiction and he was embroiled with legal issues. In 1993, James was convicted for two separate instances of kidnapping and assaulting two different women while under the influence of crack cocaine, resulting in a three-year sentence at Folsom State Prison. James was released on parole in 1996 and released the album Urban Rapsody in 1997. James's health problems halted his career again after he had a mild stroke during a concert in 1998, and he announced a semi-retirement.

In 2004, James's career returned to mainstream pop culture after he appeared in an episode of Chappelle's Show. The segment involved a Charlie Murphy True Hollywood Stories–style skit that satirized James's wild lifestyle in the 1980s. This resulted in renewed interest in his music and that year he returned to perform on the road. James died later that year from heart failure at age 56.

Following a public viewing for fans, a private memorial was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park - Hollywood Hills. A public funeral was held at St. John Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, with an estimated 6000 fans attending the viewing, and cremation following the service; a free tribute concert took place later that day in Martin Luther King Park.James was buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.
