I still remember in 2005 when I was Introduced to Boyz N Da Hood by their video “Dem Boys” and remember immediately feeling that whoever the guy was with the dreds and Beanie, who laid a flawless southern hook perfect for the instrumental, and kinda reminded you of early Lil Wayne in sound and appearance was a star. Wayne was the hottest upcoming artist at the time, so any artist compared to him was guaranteed to at least get a look. Boyz N Da Hood had a chance to be the next big thing in Atlanta, and Jody Breeze could've been the featured star! What Happened To JODY BREEZE Becoming A Star? Stunted Growth Music

As Lady Wray and her band checked into NPR headquarters for their Tiny Desk concert, I overheard her talking about how the excitement to perform kept her up all night. Once upstairs, the band got situated for soundcheck, and as she shook off the nervousness, something happened behind the Desk I'd never heard before. The first note from her mouth was so piercing I thought my ears were deceiving me. It sounded like she was singing through a loudspeaker. Bob Boilen walked over with a puzzled look, and before I could get a word out, I affirmed that we had just heard Lady Wray's natural vocal cords. "And that's light," she said as the band moved on to the next song.
That powerful voice has sustained Nicole Wray's decades-long career. As a teenager, she caught the attention of fellow Virginia natives Missy Elliott and Timbaland, lending vocals to their projects and releasing a hit of her own. She went on to work with other A-listers ranging from Jay-Z to The Black Keys, until she linked up with singer Terri Walker and formed the duo Lady in 2012. The pair split following a brief stint but Wray carried on the band name, prepending it to her own, and began making the music she was born to do solo with Big Crown records.
For her Tiny Desk, Lady Wray brought the classic soul from her last two albums, Queen Alone and Piece of Me, including "Joy & Pain" and "Guilty." She closed with a rearranged and emotional version of "Melody," named after her daughter.

Britanny Fousheé is not an artist who can be boxed in. When she first arrived at NPR headquarters, she had a very chill and collected aura surrounding her — despite the fact that the Grammys were being held the following weekend and a song she co-wrote, Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit," had received several nominations. Over the course of her four-song set at the Tiny Desk, the New Jersey-bred artist flexes her eclectic artistry and vocal range, taking us through a myriad of emotions.
In this performance, she's backed by Tobias Kelly on drums, Jake Strade on bass and Lilly Graves on guitar and takes us on a journey through her brief but very bold catalog. Opening with "spend the money" from softCORE, her debut grunge album that was rearranged to fit our intimate space, Fousheé lets acoustic guitars take the lead as her tender voice shimmers just above the surface while dynamic drums and bass lay a solid foundation. When the band transitions into "i'm fine," we hear more of Fousheé's half-whispered vocals right before she unleashes a full-fledged scream, forcefully affirming the song's title just right before sending us the sweetest smile. "Maybe I'm not fine, but are any of us?" Fousheé says to the crowd. "And it's OK to not be fine. It's all about balance."
She finds that balance as she closes out her performance with a couple of recognizable oldies but goodies: "single af," a ballad where her graceful falsetto floats over a soulful laid-back groove, and the big finale, "candy grapes," an elaborate song in which she showcases her impressive vocal range as she dares anyone to try her.

“I know producers don’t always get to do stuff like this,” Kenny Beats said as he wrapped up his Tiny Desk concert. “I’m very lucky I get to do a lot of stuff people with my job title don’t get to do.” His keen sense of gratitude was palpable and radiated throughout the space. Before the music started, he rushed over to explore the shelves behind the Desk, then added some of his trinkets. He then insisted the music had to be perfect as his dad would be listening. Kenny’s debut solo album, LOUIE, dedicated to his father, takes us on a journey through often inexplicable emotions regarding our parents. Kenny enlisted familiar voices to convey the feelings, sparingly incorporating their vocals over soulful beats.
He invited some of those vocalists, along with top-tier musicians including Nick Movshon and Leon Michels, to play something tailor-made for the Tiny Desk. For “Still,” rapper JPEGMAFIA finishes his thought through bars that we don’t hear on the album. His rambunctious energy juxtaposed with the band’s laid-back melodies is a bizarre sight, but it just works. When Remi Wolf sings, her powerful voice naturally cuts above everything else, and she stole the show on “Last Words.” Newcomer Nami’s falsetto brightened all of the harmonies, and he stepped up to close out with “Rotten.”
Kenny Beats is one of the most sought after producers in music and is most certainly the go-to for marrying different genres. Producer-hosted albums are famously frowned upon in hip-hop due to their lack of direction, but LOUIE is clearly saying something. This Tiny Desk feels like a part of that statement.

You can't see it on the screen, but there's a piece of paper taped to the Desk in front of Lee Fields throughout the R&B, blues and soul veteran's long-awaited Tiny Desk debut. It's got the set list, of course, but also an instruction to the singer: "NO AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION!!!!"
It speaks to Fields' legendary showmanship — he's often been dubbed "Little JB" due to his similarities to the hardest-working man in show business — that his team felt a need to rein in his generous impulse to work any crowd before him, knowing the time constraints of a Tiny Desk concert. It speaks further to Fields' showmanship that he ended up ignoring the directive: By the time he got to the set-closing "Two Jobs," which features a call-and-response listing the hours in the day, he was yelling, "I want y'all to count the hours!"
Though pandemic-era protocols limit the size of the Tiny Desk crowds these days, Fields got the shouts of approval (and participation) he was seeking, as he barreled through three songs from last year's Sentimental Fool and one relative oldie from a career that stretches all the way back to the late '60s: the self-explanatorily titled "Ladies," from his 2009 album My World.

A thrill of recognition passed through the crowd gathered around the Tiny Desk when the Indigo Girls began the first song of this set of stone-cold classics. It's "Closer To Fine" – arguably the singalong song of the '90s (it was released in 1989) and still a signature for the duo that's been offering life lessons to its fervent fans for nearly four decades. In politically purposeful T-shirts – Emily Saliers wore one reading PROTECT TRANS KIDS, while Amy Ray's was from the environmental justice-oriented Water is Life Festival – the two shared space as only they can, trading off songs each had written while becoming one through their trademark harmonies. The selection they offered provides an ideal brief overview of a legendary career.
"Look Long," the title track from the Girls' 15th studio album, released in 2020, featured Saliers in a tenderly contemplative mood, calling for perspective in the midst of struggle. The duo's sole accompanist, Lyris Hung, seized the room's attention on the fiery Ray rocker "Go," and then came "Kid Fears," one of the Girls's most beloved ballads, a dose of compassion that feels as necessary now as it did in 1989. The love in the room at that moment flowed both ways. "I'm always quoting NPR, so thank you all for your work — all of y'all, collectively," Ray said near the set's end. And then as the music began again, the smiles on the Girls' faces showed that they were feeling that wave of gratitude for noble work returned.

Nardwuar interviews Steve Lacy at Neptoon Records in Vancouver, BC Canada ! Doot doo !
Nardwuar Merch & Links: https://linktr.ee/nardwuar
In this full-length interview, one of the greatest R&B singer/songwriters of all time, Smokey Robinson, details his upbringing in Detroit, where he lived in a packed house. He spoke about being one of 11 kids in the house, most of whom were his nieces and nephews who, due to closeness in age, were more like his siblings. He also discussed his father’s journey out of Selma, Alabama, into Detroit after stabbing a white kid who bullied him for years and fleeing town at only 12 years old.
Moving along, the legendary R&B singer recalls starting a vocal group in elementary school and later forming his first official band, The Five Chimes. He goes on to explain what inspired the group's inception before saying that they eventually evolved into The Miracles. As the discussion continues, he talks about growing up with a young Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin as his childhood neighbors.
Later, Smokey Robinson talks about growing up in Detroit when many of his friends were dabbling in criminal mischief and gang activity. He also talks about the experience of his former group, The Matadors, auditioning for Jackie Wilson's manager. The Motown legend explains that although the audition didn't go for the group, it served as his personal introduction to Barry Gordy, Jackie Wilson's primary songwriter.
As the conversation nears an end, he looks back on the first time he retired, the events leading up to recording his first album, being the Vice President of Motown Records. He also shares his thoughts on Michael Jackson's early releases as a solo artist before touching on his friendship with the late Rick James and the tragic murder of Marvin Gaye.
On August 24, 1996, Tupac is interviewed by Rob Marriot for what was supposed to be a series of interviews for Tupac’s autobiography. Excerpts from the interview are released as the ‘Bonus CD’ with the Thug Immortal VHS.

As the interview moves along, he and DJ Vlad share an interesting discussion about the greatest hip-hop groups to have ever come out of New York City, such as Run-DMC, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan, Tribe Called Quest, and EPMD before they agree on Wu-Tang Clan. Elsewhere in the Q&A session, he reflects back on touring with Bad Boy artists during the label's heyday before reminiscing about the late Black Rob and his biggest hit, "Whoa!" He also touches on what it was like to hang out with the late DMX.
Later in the talk, Sheek talks about the joys of aging after having gone through many trials and tribulations in his younger years before talking about the tragic passing of PnB Rock. For more, scroll up and press play.

They weren’t even supposed to be a real group but, that would all change when their very first song made waves on the dance, R&B and pop charts. After a couple of early member changes, the classic lineup of Shalamar would go on to experience several years of major success. Then, conflicts began to arise between the members and their record label as well as among the members themselves that would ruin everything.

Drag 0n was a young 17 year old that came around the same underground scenes DMX would battle at, and one day he’s placed in the ring to battle none other than DMX. According to Drag, the two battle for about an hour with DMX winning every round. But, that day a respect was shown to Drag on for having the stamina and rhymes to take it their with a phenom like DMX by everyone in the room, especially DMX, who saw much of himself in Drag on, and because DMX was so hot at the time, anything he said was pretty much how things went. Drag on was signed in 97 and placed under the wing of DMX as his protege. He was like X’s little brother. He dropped a certified gold album on his debut, but from things things within the industry went down hill.
