Inside Demi Lovato's Modern California Farmhouse | Open Door | Architectural Digest Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Today AD is welcomed to Los Angeles by award-winning singer-songwriter and actor Demi Lovato to tour her trippy modern farmhouse. With six bedrooms and seven bathrooms spread across 8,500 square feet, the spacious Studio City property provided the blank canvas that Lovato had always dreamed about. Imbuing her new home with life alongside Argyle Design founders Kat Bell and James Drew was a process that paralleled her own personal journey. Every inch of the space embodies her personality—and the sense of fluidity that continues to shape her identity.

Today AD is welcomed by superstar recording artist Big Sean for a look inside his sleek and spacious Beverly Hills home. The 7-bedroom Mediterranean estate features a music studio, soaring ceilings, and a resort-style backyard outfitted with a limestone swimming pool, heated spa, and a fireplace. Once owned by legendary Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, Sean purchased the property 4 years ago and undertook an extensive renovation in tandem with L.A.-based firm JSN Studio. A few spots remain just as Slash left them however, like the private nightclub with skull light fixtures.

Nothing Else Matters - The Metallica Story ┃ Documentary
Nothing Else Matters - The Metallica Story ┃ Documentary Hotney 2 Streams • 4 years ago

Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica's current line-up comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.

Ordinary Man - The Ozzy Osbourne Story ┃ Documentary
Ordinary Man - The Ozzy Osbourne Story ┃ Documentary Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Ozzy Osbourne has spent over 50 years as the Prince Of Darkness and has become the biggest Heavy Metal icon of all time. With his new album, Ordinary Man, hitting the shelves, it's hard to believe he survived the chaos after so many years.

Ozzy Osbourne started his career when Geezer Butler came knocking on his door at 14 Lodge Road, Aston, Birmingham in the mid-60s. Shortly after this, Bill Ward and Toni Iommi would also pay Ozzy a visit. Sometime later, the first-ever Heavy Metal band was formed, Black Sabbath.

Ozzy released his first solo record, Blizzard Of Ozz, in 1980 after forming a band with Randy Rhoads. Prior to this, he spent around 10 years on the road with Black Sabbath.

This is Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince Of Darkness.

Pretty Hate Machine - The Nine Inch Nails Story ┃ Documentary
Pretty Hate Machine - The Nine Inch Nails Story ┃ Documentary Hotney 5 Streams • 4 years ago

October 20, 1989 would see Pretty Hate Machine hit the shelves. This was the debut record that Trent had worked so hard on over the past year or so. Whilst he was generally influenced by 80s music, one album in particular was a key turning point for him. Pink Floyd's The Wall, released in 1979 was somewhat of an obsession for Reznor. He said he listened to this album countless times when he was younger so it was a major factor that would determine the direction of Pretty Hate Machine. Aside from that, he simply wanted to make an album that he would enjoy listening to himself.

MURDERED Before He Became A Star! What Happened To Magnolia Legend Soulja Slim?
MURDERED Before He Became A Star! What Happened To Magnolia Legend Soulja Slim? Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Today’s feature Is a mythical legend of sorts in rap music, and definitely one in New Orleans Louisiana, that more than his songs, his universally loved personality lit up rooms and was easily identifiable by anyone in his presence. A likable guy with a passion for music, caught up in dangerous environments almost forcing him into a street life with little chance to escape. Sadly this is the typical gangster rapper story that usually ends in either death or prison, but also an appeal to fans and consumers, who get to live a rebellious and destructive lifestyle through their favorite rapper. A rapper like Soulja Slim, had he made it to his intended destiny, was a record labels dream on one side of the coin and a nightmare on the other because you knew each day could literally be the day destruction finds them and they either end up in jail or much worse dead. Slim was in an era where New Orleans in the late 90s early 2000s, was right about to make a serious push in rap music, staking their presence within the game as a future force to be reconned with. At 26 Soulja Slim was murdered right before the life he always wanted was set to begin. MURDERED Before He Became A Star! What Happened To Magnolia Legend Soulja Slim? R.I.P Soulja Slim.

If there’s any genre that has diamonds built into its very DNA, it’s hip-hop. Since the days of thick gold rope chains and Slick Rick’s early displays of decadence through to the logic-defying creations that Ghostface used to sport and the dawn of the bling era, transferring those record sales into record-setting jewelry purchases is nothing new in the game. In truth, it’s become such an accepted part of the culture that even before an MC has truly accomplished anything, the lure of the diamond district can be too strong to resist.

The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."

The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

As you may know from watching New British Canon: 90s Britain was consumed by Britpop. But Running parallel to this, featuring louder guitars, more working class backgrounds and championed by Kerrang! was Britrock. Awkwardly wedged between these groups, Skunk Anansie evaded all classification. Led by their physically slight yet vocally colossal lead singer Skin, the band were a riotous mix of hard rock, dub and punk. Their social consciousness made it so they were always fighting an uphill battle, but their defiant music and live presence couldn’t be ignored. This is New British Canon, and this is the story of “Weak.”

Bloc Party, Banquet & The Second Battle of Britpop | New British Canon
Bloc Party, Banquet & The Second Battle of Britpop | New British Canon Hotney 7 Streams • 4 years ago

If 2004 was the year of Franz Ferdinand for the NME crowd, then 2005 was all about Bloc Party. With razor sharp guitarwork, disco beats and Kele Okereke’s anguished yelp, they brought the indie set heartache you could dance to.

In spite of studio issues, Gang of Four comparisons and feuds with Britpop elderstatesmen, with Silent Alarm Bloc Party unleashed one of the most exciting British debuts of the decade. A reaction to the reductive boring rock’n’roll surrounding them, they added life, vitality and whatever they could find into their jagged yet sensitive post-punk. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Banquet.”

Charlie Parker, also known as bird, is a legendary jazz musician who has influenced many of today's genres and helped develop the genre bebop. Bebop is a subgenre of jazz that is recognized as being difficult to dance to, but Bird said he didn't care if people danced to his music, because he was an artist.

LA Buckner interviews jazz saxophonist Bobby Watson and sound archive director Chuck Haddix. LA spotlights the innovative style of Kansas City's own Charlie Parker and tracks down his influence on bebop, jazz and the rest of the musical world.

Do You Know How Much Classical Music Is Edited?
Do You Know How Much Classical Music Is Edited? Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

When we think of editing in music, we might think of quantizing lining up rhythm in an R&B song or autotune fixing the vocals of a pop singer. Many people don’t realize that editing exists in classical recordings as well. This episode of Sound Field explores the current debate in classical music of how much recordings should be edited.

Nahre Sol interviews a panel of classical musicians about their take on editing. Jon Nakamatsu, Joyce Yang, Tanya Gabrielian, and Corin Lee share their opinions on how much editing is okay and when it goes too far. At the end of the episode Arthur Buckner and Nahre face off in a quiz to see who can tell which instruments are virtual and which are real.

Hip hop’s foundation and evolution owe itself to jazz. And it’s reciprocal. Jazz has borrowed from all facets of hip hop culture and musical contributions, showing that one of the country’s oldest genres is still young at heart. Together Linda Diaz and LA Buckner work together to break down how these two genres cross-pollinate.

LA Buckner talks to Karriem Riggins about the J Dilla formula. Linda Diaz interviews Lakecia Benjamin about the ways hip hop has influenced her as a jazz saxophonist. Make sure to stay for the end to see their original jazz and hip-hop inspired track.

How Aphex Twin Spurned the 90s Dance Mainstream ("Windowlicker") | New British Canon
How Aphex Twin Spurned the 90s Dance Mainstream ("Windowlicker") | New British Canon Hotney 8 Streams • 4 years ago

For most of the 90s, Aphex Twin ran counter to what was happening in mainstream dance music. He was messing with low-key ambience during the forceful Eurodance of “Rhythm is a Dancer.” Moved to harsh industrial noise as Europe was smitten by the dreamy trance of Robert Miles’ “Children.” And when Prodigy and Chemical Brothers ruled the roost, Aphex Twin was attempting to rupture drum and bass with rapid stuttered software-programmed beats.

The Aphex Twin story is similarly antagonistic, filled with fabrication, half-truths and provocation pried from the man himself. Did he own a tank, live in a bank and do a DJ set using solely sandpaper and a food mixer? Quite possibly, but picking through everything he’s said for the presence of truth is a foolish exercise. The legend is more fun than the bedroom-based music geek reality. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Windowlicker.”

How Motörhead & "Ace of Spades" United The Punks & Metalheads | New British Canon
How Motörhead & "Ace of Spades" United The Punks & Metalheads | New British Canon Hotney 6 Streams • 4 years ago

In the 70s, there was metal - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple. And then there was punk, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned. Two separate entities that rarely if ever mixed. However a band both subcultures could agree on was Motörhead.

Led by the hoarse rumble of Lemmy, with their first three albums they cemented their place as one of the loudest bands Britain has ever produced. But the lead single from their fourth album proved they could be metal heavy, mangle it with a punk attitude and still be able to crossover to the pop charts. This is New British Canon and this is the story of "Ace of Spades."

Rock’n’Roll used to be the gnarliest heaviest genre in town. A genre that embodied rebellion, fast cars and the loudest guitars that late 1950s music had to offer. But as the 60s wore on, coffee and minor rebellion seemed positively childish, popular music needed something harder, and more in-sync with the sex and drugs part of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. Enter Psychedelic rock, similar to good ol’ Rock’N’Roll but with mind-expanding themes and an intense interest in a girl called Lucy, who was in the Sky with Diamonds. If you know what I mean. But the Summer of Love came and went, the Vietnam war didn’t end despite Hippie opposition and the tragic events of Altamount and the Manson murders made it so that the positivity of the movement seemed blind. A darker sound was needed, and appeared in the form of Metal. The bastard child of rock’n’roll and Psychedelic Rock, Metal was harder, heavier and louder than anything before and became one of the most important genres of all time. But how did we get there? Going via Eddie Cochran, "Misirlou" by Dick Dale "You're Gonna Miss Me" by The 13th Floor Elevators, through "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix, "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream, "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer, "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly, "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles and "21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson? Not to mention "Wicked Woman" by Coven, "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin And how did we get from Chuck Berry's “Johnny B. Goode” to “Black Sabbath” by Black Sabbath in twelve years? This is How Psychedelic Rock Became Metal.

Songs That Are Most Likely About Courtney Love
Songs That Are Most Likely About Courtney Love Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

“I listen to Lithium, which is like all of the ‘90s songs and a lot of them are actually about me, which is interesting. There’s so many Smashing Pumpkins songs about me, there’s a Bush song about me.” Courtney Love, Anna Farris Is Unqualified Podcast (August 2016)

Courtney Love is a controversial figure. As the lead singer of alt rock trailblazers Hole, she notched up a critically acclaimed debut, a platinum selling follow up and a four-time grammy nominated third album. She was featured as one of Barbara Walters' “10 Most Fascinating People of 1995”. She produced rock radio staples like “Violet”, “Miss World” and “Celebrity Skin”. But most know her for her famous husband, and/or her less than personable public persona. As such she's gained a fair bit of scorn, with accusations ranging from “liar” to “murderer”. Today I will be looking at some of the songs that have been inspired by Mrs Love. Including “Bruise Violet” by Babes in Toyland, “I'll Stick Around” by Foo Fighters, “Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani, “Starfuckers Inc” by Nine Inch Nails, “Heart Shaped Box” by Nirvana and “Professional Widow” by Tori Amos.

Running Up That Hill: How Kate Bush Became Queen of Alt-Pop | New British Canon
Running Up That Hill: How Kate Bush Became Queen of Alt-Pop | New British Canon Hotney 9 Streams • 4 years ago

The mid-80s was make-or-break time for Kate Bush. Since her breakthrough in 1978, she’d been gradually alienating her fans with successive ambitious but non-commercial left turns. As such, her label EMI was seriously concerned for her future as a pop artist.

However, that all changed in 1985. She returned after 18 months at her farmhouse recording studio with her weirdness intact and a song about Faustian-deals, body swapping and the power of love. And it saved her career. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God).”

Paramore & Hayley Williams' Love-Hate Relationship with “Misery Business”
Paramore & Hayley Williams' Love-Hate Relationship with “Misery Business” Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

For many, the commercial breakthrough of emo-pop of the mid-00s was all about the bombast of My Chemical Romance, the wordplay of Fall Out Boy and the theatre of Panic! At the Disco. But fifteen years later, Paramore are the band whose impact is the most visible.

Singer Hayley Williams’ female point of view and impressive voice proved to be much needed in the sea of dramatic boys falling apart to songs about hips and hearts. To the pity party, Paramore brought a barrage of solid-gold anthems, recalling the best of Jimmy Eat World, with choruses that, rather than bitterly commiserating, uplifted and consoled. However over the years, their biggest hit proved to be contentious. This is the story of Paramore and their Uneasy History with “Misery Business.”

Before 1976 Revisited: How Punk Became Punk
Before 1976 Revisited: How Punk Became Punk Hotney 2 Streams • 4 years ago

Few genres have had the lasting impact of punk. 1976 is one of those seismic dividing lines in popular music. A history destroying year zero. The point after which everything changed. It was the year that The Ramones debut was released, the year that the first singles from the UK Punk scene were set loose upon an unprepared public. And while the punks wanted to remove themselves from the past, burn all that had come before, nothing happens within a vacuum. These bands didn't appear out of nowhere with the key principles of the genre locked in place. This innovative minimalist, three-chords and the truth, turbo-powered rebellious music had to have precedent. There were other artists that lead up to this era-defining moment in music that are either forgotten, ignored or not given credit. This is how Punk became punk.

The Heartbreaking Story of DMX Hotney 2 Streams • 4 years ago

When Tupac and Biggie passed away, many thought that we will never again hear another hard and cutthroat gangsta rap. But in the late 90s the world heard DMX. Most of DMX's tracks are filled to the brim with feelings of anger and aggression, because these negative emotions haunted him his entire life. When he was just a kid, he endured severe beatings from his own mom. He also ended up in juvie. At just the age of 14, he tried weed and crack for the first time, and he was introduced to theft and a life of crime. All of this took a toll on his mental health from a very early age.

Lyrics:
My favorite thing about you is you're gone
And I don't have to hear you going on and on and on
My favorite thing about you is I'm no longer around you
Yeah my favorite thing about is you’re gone

My favorite thing about you is you're dead
You're dead to me your soul is every word you ever said
My favorite thing about you is how good I am without you
Yeah my favorite thing about you is you're gone

I used to love the way you kiss me
And now I love the way you miss me
Now I used to pray
Pray you would stay
Stay for so long
Boy I was wrong
Now my favorite thing about you is you're gone

(You’re gone you’re gone you’re gone you’re gone) X5

My favorite thing about you is your eyes
And how they get to watch me walk away from all your lies
My favorite thing about you ain’t the world I built around you
No my favorite thing about you is you're gone

I used to love the way you kiss me
And now I love the way you miss me
Now I used to pray
Pray you would stay
Stay for so long
Boy I was wrong
Now my favorite thing about you is you're gone

(You’re gone you’re gone you’re gone you’re gone) X5

And you're never coming back no more
'And I'm never gonna let you in
'Cause I'm better than I was before
Baby I know you know what you did
And you're never coming back no more
And you're never coming back no more
And you're never coming never coming never coming never coming

My favorite thing about you
My favorite thing about you is you're gone
And I don't have to hear you going on and on and on
My favorite thing about you is I'm no longer around you
My favorite thing about is you’re gone

(You’re so gone)

(You’re gone you’re gone you’re gone you’re gone) X8

The HARD FATE of Bad Boy Records Artists Of The 90's Hotney 1 Streams • 4 years ago

We have already made a similar video about what happened to the members of Death Row Records and it’s time to find out what happened to the artists from Bad Boy Records. The stories are absolutely crazy, someone threw a chair at P. Diddy so they could leave, someone went to prison and someone became religious. Anyway there’s a lot of interesting stuff to cover! Let's go!
