Stevie Wonder's irresistible ode to jazz, explained

Become a Video Lab member! http://bit.ly/video-lab

Stevie Wonder is one of the most widely celebrated artists in history. His music is infectious, melodic, and thoughtfully inspired by the jazz musicians who came before him. In his legendary song "Sir Duke," Stevie paid homage to the late Duke Ellington and his other predecessors.

Jacob Collier is a rising star in his own right and is Stevie Wonder's self-proclaimed greatest fan. Here, he breaks down the jazz influences and syncopations Stevie uses to create the magic that is "Sir Duke."

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Felix Contreras | May 2, 2022
To appreciate the magic of a performance from Thee Sinseers, you have to understand the co-mingling of Chicano and African American communities in post-World War II, Southern California. Living in the same neighborhoods, these communities created a virtual symphony of R&B, mariachi and boleros. And what you hear in this California band's Tiny Desk (home) concert, as they perform among plants in a flower shop, builds on a legacy of music that became known as "oldies but goodies" in the Chicano community.

Right from the start, band leader and vocalist Joey Quiñones and his crew dig deep with their original songs that pay homage to the oldies in a way that evokes my own memories of lowrider car shows and lazy Sunday afternoons at Roeding Park in Fresno, Calif. "What's His Name" features a delicate falsetto that was popular in 1950s R&B. The short horn parts and the doo-wop background vocals fall into a call and response backdrop for lyrics about a broken heart.

There is a very real connection in this set between the passionate vocals of the best R&B ballads and mariachi ranchera, both borrowing from the emotional devastation of Italian opera. That's all on display in "Hold On," which makes us question how we have the power to keep on living. Particular attention has to be paid to vocalist Adriana Flores' delicate pleading on "Lovin You," which crescendos into a blown out ballad powered by a tight, shouted chorus from the entire band.

Ebro Darden sits down in the studio with Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak to discuss their album, ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic.’ The stars aligned for these two R&B powerhouses when they began working in the studio together. Anderson .Paak’s underground roots and musical prowess blended perfectly with Bruno Mars’ gifts in songwriting and producing, and with the help of legends like Bootsy Collins, D’Mille, and Baby Face, they created something they hope will “last forever.” The duo breaks down the inspirations behind tracks like “Skate,” “Put On A Smile,” and “Leave The Door Open,” and share their excitement to get back on stage and feel this music alongside the audience once again. Diana Ross was probably Michael Jackson's most enduring famous friendship as the Supremes star introduced him and his brothers to the American public at the start of the Jackson 5's commercial success in 1969.

Over the years two bonded and they shared a natural affinity with each other that continued into adulthood. Although in later years, Diana felt that celebrity and his immense success took Michael away from her causing the two to fall out of touch. Here are her words as she speaks over the years about their connection, giving an insight into the man and the magic behind Michael Jackson.

The FBI investigates Lawrence Horn and co-conspirators who murdered Horn's wife, son and son's nurse for a million dollar lawsuit settlement. The investigation was challenging because James Edward Perry, who Horn hired to perform the murders, had followed instruction in a book about how to be a hit man to minimize evidence linking him to the crime.

Real FBI cases are recounted through reenactments and interviews with law enforcement and forensic scientists.

On October 7th 1986, one of the most iconic records of a generation would send shockwaves through the music industry. It was such a controversial album, radio stations wouldn’t play it and Columbia Records refused to release it due to a song called Angel Of Death. Even when the record was released by Geffen, they refused to even put their logo on it.

#Slayer #ReignInBlood #Documentary

That album would be called Reign In Blood by Slayer. Arguably the most influential Thrash Metal band of all time. They’ve been attacked by religious groups, accused of being Satanic and faced a lawsuit that involved murder. Yet despite this, they are now a household name with 12 studio albums under their belt, millions of records sold worldwide and a legacy that will surely live on through the ages.

Slayers album covers alone were enough to trigger backlash from labels, parents, and Christian groups around the world, some of their song titles and lyrics would even have them pinned as Nazi sympathisers. We’ve seen similar stories about bands having links to Satanism when Black Sabbath arrived in 1968 and KISS in 1973 when people thought it was an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service. Slayer, however, played this to their advantage, they wanted to shock people, they wanted to stand out from the crowd, that’s exactly what they did and this is their story.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Alex Ramos | April 19, 2021
As usual, Rina Sawayama is one step ahead of us. She's back in the office, clad in a periwinkle blazer with waist cut-outs and a high ponytail cleaner than the view of the city skyline. Make no mistake: even in fluorescent lighting, the Japanese British pop star performs with the same tenacity and drama you hear in her 2020 debut album, SAWAYAMA, a lustrous pop epic peppered with early aughts R&B, nu-metal and classic rock.

Unable to tour because of the pandemic, the artist has been holding onto these songs for the last year. Sawayama's Tiny Desk (home) concert successfully reminds us — in just three tracks — of her range and versatility as both artist and performer. Tears calcify in "Dynasty," a song like a salve to wounds inherited from generations past. The heaviness of the music never overshadows her voice, which ascends heroically. "Won't you break the chain with me?" she belts out.

As if turning the other cheek, Sawayama swiftly moves into the sweet, cha-ching pop of "XS," and later the soft-hearted ballad "Chosen Family," rendered in the style of her 2021 collaboration with Elton John. The song was reborn, in part, because of John's admiration for Sawayama and her ability to cross-pollinate genres, but also because the two held "Chosen Family," both the song and concept, dearly. Funny enough, the song's thesis — "I chose you / You chose me" — reflects their meeting, too.

The pair discuss the outfits that he’s worn during his rise to fame, alongside Stormzy’s newfound appreciation for fashion. “It’s sick to see that as much as I’ve grown, there are still things that are exactly the same,” Stormzy says as he reflects back. “I started in a black tracksuit with all the mandem, but we’ve ended in a hot-pink suit with the mandem… The same people that were there from the beginning”. Letra:

Venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina
Carolina
Carolina
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina
Carolina
Carolina

Baby yo soy tu flaco, tu flaco

Guayando por detrás, tra, tra, tra, tras
Mami que rica estas, tas, tas, tas
Que lo que, que what, wa, wa, wa
No te asustes si escuchas el paa’, paa’, paa, paa’

Guayando por detrás, tra, tra, tra, tras
Mami que rica estas, tas, tas, tas
Que lo que, que what, wa, wa, wa
No te asustes si escuchas el paa’, paa’, paa, paa’

Venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos, ¿que?
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos, what?
Somos de Carolina
Caro, Caro
Gracias a mi gente de Puerto Rico
Y el mundo entero
This is yo’ boy Rauw Alejandro
Los quiero con cojones, de corazón
Gracias por el apoyo desde el día 1

Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina
Carolina
Carolina
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina y venimos viraos
Somos de Carolina

►Official “I Like You (A Happier Song) (with Doja Cat)” Lyrics:

Oh girl I like you,
I do
I wanna be your friend go shoppin' in the Benz
I like you
I do
I’ll hit you when I land, can you fit me in your plans
I like you
I do
We went to bed in France, then we woke up in Japan
I like you
I do, I do

Oh girl I know you only like it fancy
So I pull up in that Maybach Candy
Yea your boyfriend’ll never understand me
Cuz I’m bout to pull his girl like a hammy, hammy

Lets take a lil’ dip lil’ lady
Hit PCH 180
Yeah I’ve been thinkin’ lately
That I need someone to save me

Now that I'm famous I've got hoes all around me, but
I need a good girl, I need someone to ground me, so
Please be true don't fuck around on me
I need someone to share this heart with me
Fill you up then run it back again

Oh girl I like you,
I do
I wanna be your friend go shoppin' in the Benz
I like you
I do
I’ll hit you when I land, can you fit me in your plans
I like you
I do
We went to bed in France, then we woke up in Japan
I like you
I do, I do

Let me know when you free
Cuz I been tryna hit it all week babe
Why you acting all sweet
I know that you want lil ol me
I get a little OD
But ain't shit new to a freak
Let me drop bands put a jewel in ya teeth
He love the way I drip turn the pool to a beach And i coulda copped a Birkin but I cop Celine
Why we got the same taste for the finer things
Brand new n***a with the same old team
Now he got me on a leash cuz he said no strings
You know I'm cool with that
Stole the pussy you ain't get sued for that
Wonder what a n***a might do for that
I could be your Chaka where Rufus at
80 in the Benz when the roof go back
They don't want to see us get too attached
I just gotta feeling that we might be friends for a long long time
You don’t mind and you know I like you for that

Oh girl I like you,
I do
I wanna be your friend go shoppin' in the Benz
I like you
I do
I’ll hit you when I land, can you fit me in your plans
I like you
I do
We went to bed in France, then we woke up in Japan
I like you
I do, I do

I just want you, I just want you
Your heart’s so big but that ass is huge
Just want you, oh baby do
You like me too, ooh, ooh

Girl I like you,
I do
I wanna be your friend go shoppin' in the Benz
I like you
I do, I do

“I Ain’t Worried” Lyrics:
i don’t know what you’ve been told
but time is running out no need to take it slow
im stepping to you toe to toe
i should be scared honey maybe so

but i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
swimmin in the floods, dancing on the clouds, below

i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it

I don’t know what you’ve been told
but time is running out so spend it like its gold
im living like I’m 9 zeros
got no regrets even when I’m broke
yeah
im at my best when i got something
im wanting to steal
way too busy for them problems
and problems to feel (yeah yeah)
no stressing just obsessin with sealin the deal
ill take it in and let it go

but i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
swimmin in the floods, dancing on the clouds, below

i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it

oooooooooo
i aint worried
oooooooo
oh no no

i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
swimmin in the floods, dancing on the clouds, below
i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it
