Saudade is a Portuguese word that can be roughly defined as a feeling of melancholy, nostalgia or yearning for something that is beloved but not present. There's no perfect translation, but one of the closest English expressions of the word I've ever seen is Billie Eilish's Tiny Desk performance.
You'd think the Los Angeles-born singer invented the term. Every breath is so full of indulgent melancholy, hopeful regret, at 22 years old she's become a captivating fixture of what it means, or rather what it feels, to love and lose simultaneously.
Trading belting vocals and rocking guitar for gentle piano and almost-breaking falsetto, she reimagines tracks like "THE GREATEST" in their most raw and honest form. In Eilish's world, love's purest forms are inherently terrifying. Therein lies her starpower – she effortlessly, relentlessly brings to the fore the trickier emotions many of us tuck away for fear of what the world might think.
"I don't know what I'm crying for, I don't think I could love you more," she sings on "BIRDS OF A FEATHER." Turns out the world is made up of a lot of people who just want to be seen, and this stripped down set is the perfect space for Eilish to give listeners just that.

Elle Mannion | December 16, 2024
The last time Waxahatchee performed at the Tiny Desk, things looked — and sounded — a bit different. In 2013, Katie Crutchfield, sporting baby bangs, performed her bare-boned, devastating songs alone with her eyes mostly closed. "I rolled out of the tour band … I sort of didn't really know what I was doing at all. My amp broke in the middle [of the set]," Crutchfield says of her 2013 performance.
And while she was already earning her place as one of the most profound lyricists of the 21st century, much has changed since then for the now Grammy-nominated artist. Across Crutchfield's six albums as Waxahatchee, plus country duo Plains, she's strayed from her DIY punk roots and settled into something more akin to Americana.
In this Tiny Desk concert, Crutchfield is cool and cozy behind the Desk; she sways with an easy smile as she kicks off the set with her latest single, "Much Ado About Nothing," alongside a five-piece band. She performs one of NPR Music's best songs of 2024, "Right Back To It," as well as Tigers Blood's title track and an album standout, "Crowbar." She and the band end with "Fire," a song that, as the first single from 2020's Saint Cloud, marked the beginning of a beautiful transformation of Waxahatchee's music.
"I'm really happy that that exists," Crutchfield says of her 2013 Tiny Desk. "And I'm really happy to be back to show you this new version of the band."

Alanté Serene | December 18, 2024
We've never had a performance quite like this before. Sesame Street put on a puppetted concert for the kids, while GWAR was our first visit from gigantic monsters. But here a colorful crew transforms the Tiny Desk into Yo Gabba GabbaLand! with all five of the Gabba friends in their full form, led by the spirited Kammy Kam and backed by a five-piece band.
I brought Yo Gabba GabbaLand! to the Tiny Desk because my 3-year-old niece is a fan of the show … but, let's be real, so am I. Its predecessor, Yo Gabba Gabba!, grabbed my attention in 2007 — even as a middle-schooler who was too "cool" for kid content — with its funky, hip-hop influenced music. The reimagined show introduces new characters and ideas while maintaining the same groovy sounds that make you wanna dance, no matter your age.
The fun-filled set features Yo Gabba Gabba! classics like "Party in My Tummy" and new cuts such as "The Orange Cat's Special Time Outdoors," which includes a surprise visit from Thundercat — donning an orange cat suit, of course. This one is sure to please the little ones and your inner child.
SET LIST
"Yo Gabba GabbaLand!"
"Hold Still"
"I'm So Mad (Just Breathe)"
"The Orange Cat's Special Time Outdoors"

Green Velvet plays a DJ set from the Defected party at Drumsheds, London.
Green Velvet has been intrinsically linked with house music almost since the start. Like all good stories, there have been many different chapters to the Chicagoan’s journey, each as important as the next. From seminal dance anthems to influential record labels, electrifying DJ sets to his iconic green flash of hair, he has always stood out from the crowd and is a deserving winner of our Outstanding Contribution award for 2024.
Depending on your age, you will know Curtis Alan Jones either as a freaky cyber-punk with a penchant for dark but tongue-in-cheek house anthems or as a more serious and mindful preacher who champions a religious way of life. He is one of the early pioneers whose Cajual and Relief labels were some of the most prominent and prolific in all of Chicago in the early ‘90s. They helped usher in a new wave sound after the early blueprint of Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy and the acid of Phuture. His style was to strip things back to a mean and kicking sound that laid some of the foundations for the later emergence of sub-genres like juke and footwork.
Initially, it was harder grooves that came on Cajual and more tracky fare arriving via Relief, with now household names like Boo Williams, Glenn Underground, Gemini and DJ Sneak all going on to become stars in their own right after early releases on the label. Of course, Jones’s own productions were right at the heart of the scene back then, not least the generational classic ‘La La Land’. It was originally written as a wake-up call for a friend who was doing too many drugs, but pill-munching clubbers worldwide adopted it as their own.

Other hits such as ‘Answering Machine’ and ‘Flash’ brought Jones more acclaim, but you won't find him playing the first of those nowadays on account of its gratuitous swearing. Now a practising Christian, he has gone on record before as saying that he prefers to spread more positive messages. Religion often informed his work even back at the start, with tracks like the 1998 classic ‘Preacher Man’ hitting hard with its raw drums, but also featuring an extract of a sermon by Baptist preacher Reverend CL Franklin.
Rather than slip into the role of a heritage act playing the hits, Green Velvet has remained relevant by hooking up with several contemporary artists over the years. There have been tracks and US tours with DirtyBird boss Claude von Stroke as Get Real, he has dropped hits with Sonny Fodera, and put out several singles with Eats Everything, HI-LO and, most often, Patrick Topping, including enduring gems like ‘Voicemail’ and most recently ‘Mad Motion’.
In 2022 he sat alongside fellow Chicago titans Honey Dijon and Terry Hunter and brought real authenticity to Beyoncé’s GRAMMY-winning and house-infused album ‘RENAISSANCE’ by providing a sample for ‘Cozy’. His love of a bold and provocative vocal hasn't diminished either, with tracks like ‘Sheeple’ alongside Prok & Fitch musing on mind control, government interference and the rise of technology.
Importantly, Jones has never lost his edge in the DJ booth: to hear him play is to be dialled into a twisted soundtrack designed for maximum impact, be that with loopy house vocals or more dark and instrumental techno. He continues to play many of the world’s biggest stages but also takes his La La Land Experience to packed out crowds everywhere from Miami Music Week to Printworks in London. With credentials like these, Green Velvet's impact on the evolution of our scene cannot be compared.

Janice Robinson, formerly of Livin’ Joy, tells the story of their 1994 No.1 hit, ‘Dreamer’.
Originally released in 1994, it was the following summer that saw ‘Dreamer’ reach No.1 in the UK charts, and go on to become one of the biggest selling records of 1995.
Here, Robinson reflects on how she wrote ‘Dreamer’ on a train journey, as a favour to her boyfriend’s friends, brothers Paolo and Gianni Visandi, who as a trio would later form eurodance group Livin’ Joy.
The song took Robinson from working in retail at GAP and waiting tables to travelling across the world, appearing on TV shows, and visiting the famous Top of the Pops studio. However — Janice refused to sign a contact for a follow up single, stating: “I didn’t want to be owned” and was therefore replaced by Tameko Star.
Despite spending three decades watching others take credit for her biggest hit, Robinson shares how she still has an endless love for 'Dreamer', and the joy it continues to bring.
