Frank "Sugar Chile" Robinson performs "Caldonia" in the classic movie "No Leave, No Love" (MGM, 1946). Although this has already been posted on YouTube, I am including the entire scene, which has some cute dialogue between Frank and the other actors, Van Johnson, Keenan Wynn, and Marina Koshetz.

I have spoken fairly recently with Mr. Robinson, who said this was the only movie in which he appeared. What a crying shame! Thankfully, there are other films of him on YouTube. Robinson said he performed as a guest in a Frankie Carle piano contest in Detroit, where he was discovered and given a contract from MGM. One of the top shows in Late Night's 11 1/2-year run, presented in full here and in stereo. First preceded by Dave promoting the appearance the night before and then Bill Wendell's pre-announce. From the repeat of October 8, 1988. (There were two LNs broadcast this night, the first a new show that aired in Carson's slot at 11:30 PM -- the Tonight Show's 26th Anniversary special had aired earlier in prime time -- and then this repeat at 12:30 am.)

Accompanying Cher with her performance of "I Found Someone" and then later with Sonny were John McCurry on second guitar, vocalist Pattie Darcy, and, on synthesizer, Cliff Carter, who was part of the 24th Street Band with Will Lee, Hiram Bullock, and Steve Jordan in the late '70s to early '80s, a band whose second LP in 1980 was produced by Paul Shaffer.

This same ensemble would accompany Cher on SNL a week later on November 21.

That same week later, on November 20, Dave shows a photo that had been taken during the break after Cher's performance.

And, finally, a clip from May 6, 2015, as Cher appears for the final time on Dave's Late Show, here in the same jacket worn 28 years earlier.

With Jeff Martin as Flunky and Gerard Mulligan getting fired again.

The Spinners hadn’t really made it big yet. But that all changed after signing with Atlantic Records and working with songwriter Thom Bell. Bell helped them create their album Spinners, and it turned out to be a game-changer. The group had five songs in the Top 100, with two even hitting the Top Ten. Suddenly, the Spinners became one of the biggest soul groups of the 70s.

Doechii, known as the "Swamp Princess," arrived at NPR HQ radiating confidence. She moved with purpose, knowing exactly what she wanted and how to achieve it. Her declarative statement, "I'm everything," from "BOOM BAP" off her Grammy-nominated mixtape, ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL, was on full display in her Tiny Desk debut.

Backed by a full band, horns and two background singers, Doechii's performance was a masterclass in creativity. Sporting vintage academia looks, complete with matching cornrows and beads, Doechii delivers a freshly rearranged medley of cuts from ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL, tailored specifically for Tiny Desk. While hip-hop remained at the core, she truly gave us everything: a jazz arrangement of "BOOM BAP," heavy rock vibes on "CATFISH" and a Southern praise break outro on "NISSAN ALTIMA."

She closed her set with "Black Girl Memoir" from her debut album, Oh The Places You'll Go. Before performing, she shared, "I wrote this song specifically for Black women. As a dark-skinned woman, there's a very unique experience I'm trying to internalize … This is dedicated to all the beautiful Black women in the room." While her star has been steadily on the rise since her debut, 2024 is shaping up to be the year Doechii cements herself as a household name.

To celebrate 40 years since the release of the 1984 breakdancing classics Breakin' and sequel Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, I was honoured to interview stars Lucinda Dickey and Michael 'Boogaloo Shrimp' Chambers and Breakin' 2 director Sam Firstenberg.

I am a (zillennial) London-based freelance culture and entertainment journalist who was introduced to these films by my mum. We absolutely love the movies and revisit them often, so it was an absolute privilege and joy to speak to Lucinda, Boogaloo Shrimp and Sam to hear about their memories of filming the iconic movies, the lore on some of the franchise's most iconic scenes and their feelings on the legacy of these films.

If you're watching this, it's because you love a song — more than that, you love how someone plays that song. Several artists have covered "Wagon Wheel," an inescapable staple of folk festivals and hootenannies. But you know what? No one performs that ramblin' folk stomper quite like Old Crow Medicine Show. So here, 20 years after the band recorded and turned it into a phenomenon, Ketch Secor and his band open their Tiny Desk with "Wagon Wheel."

For nearly three decades, Old Crow Medicine Show has served up a revved-up take on old-time music, folk, bluegrass, country and everything else tossed into what we call roots music. That energy, still wired from its early busking days, translates here as the band runs through "O Cumberland River" and "Wolfman of the Ozarks," complete with train-chugging harmonica and a jaw harp duet. The group closes with "One Drop," a hopeful, gospel-style call for unity in a moment we could all use some.

We didn’t know each other then – with the exception of messaging on Instagram after Jon had shared one of my Florence Price recordings – as we began a correspondence about the lineage of Black composers and personal reflections on the challenges of that strange time. Of all the artists I spoke to that year, Jon seemed perhaps the most aware of staying centered in a kind of grace despite the chaos and crisis around us – of the need to look beyond the troubles of the present, open to the possibility of whatever would come next.

He’s been in motion ever since. He left his position as bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to focus on his own creative projects, and released two adventurous albums that launched him into pop-star orbit. He married his longtime partner, the writer Suleika Jaouad. He conducted the premiere of his orchestral composition American Symphony at Carnegie Hall, an event documented in a film of the same name that follows his creative process with the symphony while confronting the devastating return of Suleika’s leukemia.

This is a lot of change in just a few years. An Oscar, a Golden Globe, five Grammys (including Album of the Year), the restoration of a 19th century townhouse in Brooklyn, and several rescue dogs later, Jon has made a graceful circle back to his musical beginnings. His newest album is inspired by Beethoven’s music – pieces he learned from his childhood piano teacher Miss Shirley back home in Metairie, La.

So we circled back as well, into our conversation about our musical and human lineages - back to Beethoven and beyond – about accepting change and listening to the constant heartbeat of hope, even in hard times.

In 2024, life in America is as tumultuous as ever. And Jon Batiste is moving fast, as always. But he’s centered amidst the swirl, tracing his history, following his heart and keeping in tempo with the pulse of the here and now.
