When he started to make the music that appears on his new album, trumpeter Terence Blanchard wasn't thinking of Eric Garner, Michael Brown or any of the other recent high-profile police killings of African-Americans. He was thinking of desired collaborators: Donald Ramsey, a bassist and high-school classmate; Oscar Seaton, a drummer with whom he'd worked on film projects; Fabian Almazan, the pianist of his other band; and Charles Altura, a guitarist he'd encountered online. And he was thinking about a sound different from the left-center jazz quintet he leads: something overtly funky, with electric bass and guitar and processing and human voices and dance grooves.

As the E-Collective came together — both as a band and in terms of its repertoire — it took on another guiding light. Blanchard, no stranger to political statements, saw the music as an opportunity to speak out on current events he was unable to ignore, especially as a black man. The eventual recording came to be a commentary on the treatment of minorities by American law enforcement, in the vein of the #blacklivesmatter movement. The album's title references Eric Garner's last words, "I can't breathe"; it's called Breathless.

The heavy and the party recently came together for a week-long run at a jazz club in D.C., though the mood was much more on the party side when the E-Collective stopped at NPR headquarters. The mood was relaxed and jovial from the time the group stepped into the lobby, with Englishman Chris Bailey supplying plenty of backbeats on our house drum set — though there was a moment toward the end of the set when Blanchard casually explained the project, setting up a lyrical, almost elegiac solo. This music was a modern update on jazz fusion, sure, but also one where we dance to ward off despair.

Oct. 5, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- There's so much joy in the sound of the Hammond organ, especially for those of us of a certain age. Hearing it can transport you to the early '70s, when every rock band seemed to have one in its arsenal: The Allman Brothers, Santana, Deep Purple. In the hands of true masters — like the late Billy Preston and the very-much-alive Booker T. Jones — the organ can be a melodic, funky rhythm machine.

Cory Henry's name belongs in the same breath as the Hammond organ masters of the past. The instrument creates the central sound of his dynamic, neo-soul- and funk-infused musical identity, and he opens his turn behind the Tiny Desk with what feels like an encore: the full-on soul assault of "Love Will Find a Way." The song twists and turns, then winds up as a full-on celebration — and it's only the first song in his set.

Henry's keyboard skills are on full display during a synth solo in "Trade It All," which also spotlights his entire band. To my mind, they'd have sounded right at home on Stax Records in the '70s — no small accomplishment. "Send Me a Sign" then showcases some of the roots of Henry's songwriting; it's inspired by church sermons that bloom into group sing-alongs. Just another way Cory Henry digs way back to give us something new and exciting.

MANY EYES is a new band fronted by Keith Buckley, the former singer/frontman for Metalcore stalwarts, Every Time I Die. The group includes Charlie Bellmore (Guitar, Bass), Nick Bellmore (Drums, Bass, Backing Vocals).

“Revelation” is the first taste of things to come from the newly completed MANY EYES album due for release in 2024. While the music will please long-time ETID fans, it digs deeper and is more panoramic in taste and tone harkening back to 90’s style hallelujah choruses that showcase the depth of Keith’s voice.

“This is an expression of who I am,” Buckley proclaims. “I’m letting the music do the talking. I really trusted my collaborators. I’m not interested in being known as a frontman."

The album and "Revelation" were both produced/mixed by Nick Bellmore and mastered by Randy Merrill (Cage The Elephant, Imagine Dragons, Foo Fighters).

The project is executive produced by Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Jasta).

Daughtry - The Making of 'Artificial' (Vevo Footnotes)

Everyone's talking about the dangers of AI, and Chris Daughtry wanted his band's latest to get in on the conversation as well. In our exclusive Footnotes interview the singer says he wanted the "Artificial" video to be "dark and ominous." So they conceived a worst-case scenario and let it roll. "Just another lethal injection to mankind," the lyrics explain, and the cyborg vibe effected by director Ethan Maniquis has plenty of dystopia attached. Sci-fi fiend Daughtry had 'Terminator' thoughts in mind as the script developed, and Maniquis brought lots of the background to life with Unreal Game Engine software.
