The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. This celebration highlights the beautiful cornucopia of Black music and our special way of presenting it. We hope you enjoy.

"There are a lot of people who have been moving the needle forward for Black people. And they have been for some time," says an earnest, almost plaintive 2 Chainz. In a heart-filled sermon, he cites Martin Luther King Jr., Tyler Perry and Puffy as trailblazers, practicing gratitude for Black leaders who inspire him and the world at large. It's a sober moment of euphoria — and a drastic shift from the first 17 minutes of the Grammy winner's flashy Tiny Desk.

Colored in royalty, neon hues of lavender, fuchsia and violet, in his high-end nail studio Pamper (yes, he owns it, and he's not shy about letting you know), 2 Chainz is feeling himself throughout his five-song set. Getting a champagne-soaked pedicure, rolling one and periodically shouting out his sixth and latest studio album, So Help Me God!, the rapper exudes Black excellence in the way of luxurious comfortability. His unbridled braggadocio so clearly comes from the freedom of security after being denied opportunities, not just individually but generationally.

And he's worked for it. First coming up from Atlanta's hip-hop scene as one half of Playaz Circle, 2 Chainz landed a solo record deal and guest verses on Kanye West's "Mercy" and Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap'' in 2012. And, through guest verses and singles, his music's been dominating the charts ever since. For his Tiny Desk (home) concert, he rewinds the clock and samples that stacked discography ("Good Drank," "I'm Different") and performs three new hits ("Grey Area," "Southside Hov," "Vampire"). Alternating between earnest vulnerability and well-deserved conceit, 2 Chainz offers up his best: leaning into the dynamism of life and practicing gratitude.

Kelela took her opportunity at the Tiny Desk to create something new. She swapped key pieces from her recordings (hard drums and effects) for a harp and piano. She also presented us with a challenge or two as well. While there weren't many bodies behind the Desk, the instruments left little room for movement. Pianist Briley Harris was barricaded by the keys, and background vocalists Brittney Mills and Alayna Rodgers were nestled next to Ahya Simone's big beautiful harp. When an artist presents us with a distinctive, creative vision for their performance, the fun part is collaborating to execute that idea.

This Tiny Desk was a homecoming for Kelela. She let the music do most of the speaking but not before shouting out Washington, D.C., where she was born. The setlist seamlessly showcases most parts of her catalog with a couple of brand new arrangements. "Enough" and "Take Me Apart" are almost unrecognizable, recast to allow Kelela's vocals to sit gently within the harp and keys. The singer found a thunder tube in our percussion section and tinkered with it during soundcheck. Toward the end of "The High," she sings through it to alter her voice. That exploration and experimentation perfectly capture the essence of the show.

Flexing unparalleled verbal acumen once again, underground rap icon and Sacramento native X-Raided unveils a brand new single and music video titled “The Sunken Place,” out now on Strange Music.


His storytelling and dynamic lyricism power up this arresting banger. Right out of the gate, he recounts how a romance unfurls between “a fan of underground rappers” and “one in particular who was locked up doing time.” An ominous piano loop wraps around the track's tense beat as X-Raided warns the listener that, “Sometimes you have to fail to learn a cautionary tale.” The chorus chants, “He had to Get Out, Get Out, Get Out,” alluding to the underlying story of helplessness and hopelessness embedded within this Jordan Peele inspired story.


“I’ve had a lot of conversations with a variety of formerly incarcerated persons who have been in relationships prior to being released,” said X-Raided. “A common theme that arises is that they discover that their view of life had been largely rooted in fantasy while they were incarcerated and that the reality of their circumstances is something entirely different from what they had fantasized. There is a sense of still being imprisoned that sets in where you feel like a character playing a role in your own life, not speaking the way you would normally speak, not dressing the way you would normally dress, until you either lose yourself forever or gain the courage to make dramatic changes that everyone won’t understand. For instance, having children: if your partner has a child that is not yours but presents it to the world as if it were… yet you have no biological children, do you just accept that fallacy and forgo ever having biological children in order to maintain the fantasy that you’ve committed yourself to or do you break away and create a real family for yourself? There are a lot of questions along those lines that we have to ask ourselves upon our release from prison.”


Life tests this particular love to a breaking point, but you’ll need to listen and watch in order to find out what happens as the visual energizes the story on screen, allowing the viewer to explore the ups and downs of the relationship in question, literally bringing the lyrics to life in vivid fashion.
