They Side, My Side & The Truth 3/1/2024

In 1983, at the NBA All-Star Game, Marvin Gaye stole the show with his singular rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

At the time, singing the anthem was for the most part a straightforward job — shoulders square, sing it straight like the hymn that it is. But for this game, Gaye took the anthem to a new level.

Lon Rosen remembers it well — he was the director of promotions for the Los Angeles Lakers, the team hosting the All-Star game that year. He says Gaye's one rehearsal was bumpy. By this point in his life, Gaye was battling a serious drug addiction. And on game day, the singer was running perilously late. But then the lights dimmed, and Gaye made history.

One year later, Marvin Gaye was dead, shot by his own father.

Today Kelly Rowland joins Condé Nast Traveler to share everything she loves about her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Whether you want to try the city’s best lemon pepper wings and peach cobbler or know whether the Coca-Cola museum is actually worth a visit, these are Rowland’s best recommendations for a trip to Atlanta.

Daryl Hall & John Oates, commonly referred to as Hall & Oates, are an American pop rock duo formed in 1970 in Philadelphia. Daryl Hall is generally the lead vocalist; John Oates primarily plays electric guitar and provides backing vocals. The two write most of the songs they perform, separately or in collaboration. They achieved their greatest fame from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s with a fusion of rock and roll and rhythm and blues.

Hall and Oates have sold an estimated 40 million records. They are best known for their six No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Out of Touch", as well as many other songs which charted in the Top 40 including the singles "You Make My Dreams", "She's Gone", "Say It Isn't So" and "Sara Smile".
