Spacehog -
Spacehog would be frequently labelled as a glam inspired band and they would emerge out of nowhere during the mid 90’s. Most people know them for one song - ‘In the meantime’. The song was prominently featured in the trailer and soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the video games guitar hero 5 and rock band 3 as on disc tracks. Spacehog would tour with some of the biggest rock bands on the planet including Oasis, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, and Red Hot Chili Peppers in addition to releasing four studio albums. Despite all being from the UK, the members with the exception of the brothers never met there and didn’t have as much success back home, instead becoming bigger in America. It resulted in some in their home country of writing them off as an American band.. But like i’ve asked so many times on my channel. What happened to Spacehog?
The history of Spacehog begins with the Langdon brothers Antony and Royston. Antony is older. Both of them were raised in Leeds, in the UK. The brothers came from a musical family performing in church choir and playing in bands together. Their early musalical influences would include the beatles, David bowie, queen and, led zeppelin. Royston always had dreams of living a glamorous life something he chalked up to his mother who frequently bought vogue magazine. He’d see images of well dressed models getting out of expensive cars and they seemed more like the types of people favored cocktails over beer at the local pub. Couple this with growing up in the 70’s and Royston revelled in the atmosphere of gender bending and dressing androngynosluy , even admitting to sometimes wearing his mother’s makeup. He apparently even showed up on an 80’s tv show that was like a battle of the band’s format for his group the Raspberries.
Antony meanwhile was a restless spirit, soon leaving Leeds and he found himself living in Switzerland, Hong Kong and London before he followed his girlfriend to New York City by the early 90’s. That girlfriend would later dump him in 1994. Royston feeling bad for his brother opted to pay him a visit in new york to cheer him up. Royston at the time was playing in a band who was on the verge of getting a record label deal with a company called Rhythm King, but he wasn’t happy in the band and also hated the british music press. He would tell The Toronto Star “I was dreading all the small minded, students with angst-and acne kind of writing about us…You can be one of the NME darling bands and then six months later they’re slagging you off and printing funny pictures of you.” A few days prior to Royston arriving in New York Antony met drummer Johnny Cragg at an espresso bar, where the drummer worked as a barista and a rat killer. Cragg at the time was living with a friend sleeping on his floor and only came to America after being bored in England wanting to leave behind his partying and drug lifestyle. He’d also admit he also across the ocean in search of rock n’ roll, something he couldn’t find back home. The drummer was offered a job to clean a basement of an espresso bar, only to later learn it was rat infested. It turned out the espresso bar shared a basement with a pharmacy and the rats were nesting in old boxes of medicine, but it made his job easier as the rats were high on downers.
While working at the espresso bar in march of 1994, Cragg overheard someone talking in a leeds accent and that person happened to be Antony.. The two struck up a conversation and started jamming together and Royston showed up not long after. The seeds of Spacehog would be born. Royston would front the group and play bass, while his brother played guitar. Royston’s initialy plans were to just visit his brother for a a week or so but his plans changed. Royston had already written a number of songs for his old band and was enthralled by new york city so the timing felt perfect telling songfacts
I think New York's a great place for people that are curious. New York will always be a great place

Today’s video is a suggestion from one of my Canadian subs and it’s a trip down memory lane for myself and I’m sure some of you too..Today we’re going to talk about the most successful album compilation series in Canadian history. It was so successful, that if you are Canadian or lived in Canada and listened to music between 1996 and 2009 you probably took part in this cultural phenomenon. It was so popular there’s even a book written about it, and it’s cultural significance in Canada. Today, let’s talk about the rise and fall of Big Shiny Tunes.
Rather than having mtv when we were kids in Canada, we had our own version, much music. Much is still around, but it’s a sad shell of it’s former self much like mtv. Starting in 1996 Much Music would compile the year’s biggest rock hits into a compilation album that would be released right before Christmas as the perfect stocking stuffer. It was called big shiny tunes.. It was usually labeled in the press as being an album of alternative hits, but I think that’s a mischaracterization, it was really the year’s most popular rock songs - spanning multiple genres from whatever was poplar at the time, nu-metal, pop rock, punk, emo, post-hardcore and so forth
I first heard of Big Shiny tunes when I was in grade 6 that was the year big shiny tunes 2 came out. I grew up in small town Alberta for most of my life and in the lead up to pretty much every christmas my friends always talked about wanting the latest edition of Big Shiny Tunes. This is the commercial for the very first big shiny tunes from 1996.
What made Big Shiny Tunes culturally Canadian was that it would have your usual hits from American and British artists, but it also featured Canadian artists, some established and some who weren’t. To a lot of Canadians it made it seem like their own artists were on the same playing field as the likes of Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, Bush and No Doubt.
Author Mark Teo would publish a book in 2018 titled Shine: How a MuchMusic Compilation Came to Define Canadian Alternative Music and Sell a Zillion Copies. He would write, "for the hundreds of thousands of people who owned the album, it was a snapshot of us."
The origin of big shiny tunes has several beginnings Vice had on take, while CBC had it’s own while several other newspapers had their slightly different versions. So let me summarize it for you. According to CBC the idea for big shiny tunes came from a yearly Canadian compilation album called Dance Mix that debuted in 1990. A label called Quality Recordings put out Dance Mix and they were an entertainment company that put out music on behalf of american labels in canada. It was in 1997 Quality teamed up with Much Music to release a similar annual dance compilation record called Muchdance that ran for many years.Just as a sidenote for my canadian subs, you might remember you could hire much music to come do a muchdance party at your work function or school.
Anyways, getting back to the story, Quality Recordings according to CBC approached Much Music in the mid 90’s to do a similar spin off for alternative rock music since the dance mix albums were such a commercial hit. So that’s where the idea of partnering with the big labels came up. Another story is that EMI Canada approached MuchMusic to do a compilation album based on the NOW compilations that were a big hit in the UK.
Vice’s retelling of big shiny tunes had a slightly different series of events, which dated back to 1993, three years before the first iteration of the series came out. It start with a lawyer named Chris Harrs who worked for Universal Music Canada. By 1993 compilation albums were nothing new to record labels. They dated back to the 70’s and perhaps no company was better known for putting out these types of albums than K-Tel who put out genre specific compilations. You might remember some of their commercials, i mean this one was my personal favourite that i ca

The Ataris, known for hits like "Boys of Summer" and "So Long, Astoria," have a tumultuous history. Originating in Anderson, Indiana, the band's classic lineup dissolved, leaving only frontman Kris Roe. Kris, a high school dropout, immersed himself in music, drawing inspiration from his father's eclectic taste. The band's break came when their demo caught the attention of Joe Escalante from Kung Fu Records, leading to their debut album, "Anywhere but Here."
Relocating to Santa Barbara, The Ataris faced challenges, with Kris even experiencing homelessness. The lineup changed, but they continued touring and gained traction with albums like "Blue Skies, Broken Hearts, Next 12 Exits" and "End is Forever." Despite indie success, they signed with Columbia Records for "So Long, Astoria," inspired by Richard Hell's book, "Go Now." The album featured the chart-topping cover of "Boys of Summer."
Their major-label journey brought complications, including lineup changes and artistic compromises. Post-"So Long, Astoria," internal conflicts and label issues led to departures, impacting the band's dynamic. Kris Roe's divorce and anxiety further strained the situation. The band left Columbia, releasing "Welcome the Night" independently on Sanctuary Records, which unfortunately flopped.
Facing uncertainty, the band saw member changes, a reunion tour, and eventually, Kris Roe remained as the sole original member. The Ataris transformed into a solo project, touring with varying lineups. In 2012, a video surfaced of Kris attacking the drummer during a show, citing alcohol as the cause.
Despite internal tensions, the band occasionally reunited, notably in 2023 for two shows. However, ex-member John Collura criticized the ongoing use of The Ataris' name as a "brand," urging Kris to pursue solo work. Collura shifted to a consultant role and owns a recording studio. Mike Davenport, another ex-member, faced legal troubles in 2018, charged with fraud related to his telemarketing company.
Kris Roe, still under The Ataris, faced numerous near-death experiences, including surviving, pneumonia, and a high-speed chase. The band marked the 20th anniversary of "So Long, Astoria" with two reunion shows in 2023, showcasing a complex journey of success, internal conflicts, legal issues, and personal struggles.

In this YouTube video, we embark on a fascinating exploration of the history of Big Wreck, the Canadian-American rock band that emerged from Berklee College of Music in 1992. The group, comprising guitarist/vocalist Ian Thornley, guitarist Brian Doherty, bassist Dave Henning, and drummer Forrest Williams, had diverse musical influences that shaped their distinctive sound.
Thornley's upbringing in Toronto exposed him to folk and blues music, influencing his gravitation towards melodies. His early interest in Led Zeppelin's folkier side and harmonies of groups like Supertramp laid the foundation for Big Wreck's unique musical blend. Thornley's classical piano background and a brief detour into basketball added further dimensions to his musical journey.
The quartet met at Berklee, where Thornley's penchant for noise infractions led to dorm-hopping and eventual collaboration with his future bandmates. Their focus on groove over technical chops defined their approach to music. Leaving Berklee, they became full-time musicians and adopted the name Big Wreck, though its origin remains unclear.
The band's eclectic influences, ranging from metal to jazz, southern rock to Supertramp, made categorizing their sound challenging. Often labeled as post-grunge, proto-progressive, or progressive, they drew comparisons to diverse acts like Soundgarden, The Who, Collective Soul, and more.
Big Wreck faced a challenging start, playing countless gigs, selling tapes, and enduring numerous rejections from record labels. A three-year touring stint across Canada and the eastern U.S. laid the foundation for their debut album.
Their breakthrough came unexpectedly when, attempting to cross the border, they faced complications due to Thornley's expired visa. Stranded in Toronto, Thornley shopped the band's demo, catching the interest of Management Trust, the same company managing The Tragically Hip. This connection opened doors, leading to a recording deal with Atlantic.
The band's debut album, "In Loving Memory of…" (1997), produced by Joseph Puig, featured tracks like "The Oaf" and "That Song." The former, created in a spontaneous jam session, became a significant hit. Despite success in Canada, the album struggled in the U.S., echoing the pattern seen with The Tragically Hip.
The video explores the band's challenges, influences, and the dynamics of their success. Thornley's outspokenness on the state of rock music in the 2000s and his relationship with MuchMusic personality Rebecca Rankin add personal dimensions to the narrative.
The story takes a turn with the band's second album, "The Pleasure and the Greed" (2001), marked by experimentation and challenges in an evolving music landscape. The video covers the dynamics within the band, their perspectives on commercial success, and the changing industry landscape.
Big Wreck's breakup in 2002, attributed to various pressures, internal issues, and external factors, sets the stage for Thornley's solo career. The video delves into Thornley's solo albums and his audition for Velvet Revolver, providing insights into his musical journey during the band's hiatus.
The narrative takes an unexpected twist with Big Wreck's reunion in 2010, driven by Thornley and Doherty reconnecting. The video highlights their third album, "Albatross" (2012), and subsequent releases, as well as the tragic passing of guitarist Brian Doherty in 2019 due to lung cancer.
The exploration of Big Wreck's journey serves as a testament to the band's resilience, evolving sound, and enduring impact on the Canadian rock scene. The video encapsulates the highs, lows, and the enduring spirit of a band that continues to shape the landscape of rock music.

Official music video for "Ooh LA LA" from RTJ4, featuring Greg Nice & DJ Premier.
we shot this video only a few weeks before the pandemic hit with no clue as to what the future held. the fact that we got the chance to do it is damn near miraculous in hindsight.
in conceptualizing the video with our friends Brian and Vanessa Beletic we imagined the world on the day that the age old struggle of class was finally over. a day that humanity, empathy and community were victorious over the forces that would separate us based on arbitrary systems created by man.
this video is a fantasy of waking up on a day that there is no monetary system, no dividing line, no false construct to tell our fellow man that they are less or more than anyone else. not that people are without but that the whole meaning of money has vanished. that we have somehow solved our self created caste system and can now start fresh with love, hope and celebration. its a dream of humanity’s V-DAY… and the party we know would pop off.
love, RTJ

Lyrics:
First thing Monday morning
I'm gonna pack my tears away
Got no cause to look back
I'm lookin' for me a better day
You see the thing 'bout love is that it's not enough
If the only thing it brings you is pain
There comes a time when we could all make a change, darling
Just let go
Let it flow, let it flow, let it flow
Everything's gonna work out right, you know
Just let go, let it flow, let it flow, let it flow
Just let it go, baby

Lyrics
(Do you know, do you know)
Do you, do you know Murphy’s Law
I think I’ve held
The way I’m losing it
Inside my head
The same scenery
In this sweet sweet misery
(Do you, do you know Murphy’s Law)
Everything is supposed to happen
But tell me what I am supposed to accept
Can I endure another failure
‘Cause I’ve seen the worst coming right at our face
How to save the world, tell me in instance
I don’t know how to handle this fury dance
What is yet to come, what is yes to come
Our eyes up there, this is Murphy’s Law
How much do we have to fail, how much do I have to fail
To find the fucking place where I belong
Whatever can happen will happen
We will never get away, I will never get away but I’ll try
And deep down below
Encircled by the claws
In an unfathomable hole
But if I try to climb the well
Attracted by the light ahead
The tears of the sky flowing on my face
I would have like to forget how long I’ve failed, my way barricaded
Crawling in under the surface, roaming around to find my place
(Ooh)
And if the clouds fall apart
(Ooh)
Could we see the stars come out
I would have like to forget how long I have failed
But it’s what is keeping me aware
This is Murphy’s Law
Follow the rain
From the clouds and the pain
Aah follow the rain
Try to see what’s inside of them

LYRICS
MEMORY REVOLVING
THE FEAR OF LETTING GO
THE ARROW OF ACCEPTANCE
THE MOMENT WHEN YOU KNOW
AND WHEN THE ANSWERS ONLY DIVIDE
WHEN YOU NEVER QUESTION THE DOUBTS IN YOUR MIND
WHEN THE DISTANCE GROWS BUT THE END IS IN SIGHT
NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE WHEN THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO FIND
NOW ALL THAT’S LEFT BEHIND
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY
OH THE FEAR, THE SLOW DIVIDE
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY
ALL THE SILENT SIGNS
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY
TWO SIDES, A DOUBLE LIFE
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY
I’VE GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME
BUT CHANCES COME AND GO
YOU SAY THAT I BELIEVE MY LIES
BUT NOW YOU’LL NEVER KNOW, YOU KNOW YOU WON’T
AND WHEN THE ANSWERS ONLY DIVIDE
WALKING IN A CROWD AND I LEAVE YOU BEHIND
BACK INTO THE DARK WITH THE LIONS OF NIGHT
NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE WHEN THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO FIND
NOW ALL THAT’S LEFT BEHIND
NOW THE FEAR THE SLOW DIVIDE
SEEING ALL THE SILENT SIGNS
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY
NOW ALL THAT’S LEFT BEHIND
NOW THE FEAR THE SLOW DIVIDE
SEEING ALL THE SILENT SIGNS
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY

lyrics:
little jagged edge, i'm leaning in again.
and I felt it when you said that I’m just a mess,
there was nothing I could do but see your point of view-
and that’s the truth.
she say’s “I hate the taste, I love the rush”
I say “I hate how I think I think too much, but that’s alright”
and these days, it feels like all I know is this phase,
I hope i'm basking in the glow of something bigger I don’t know.
so I take another sip cause i'm still not sick of it and I guess if the shoe fits.
well you’ll know when I quit cause it never seems to fail, my weaker side prevails.
yeah my weaker side prevails and I hate the way I miss your touch.
I hate these songs I sing – this empty drink. do I even give a fuck?
well I don’t know
and these days, it feels like all I know is this phase
I hope i'm basking in the glow.
cut me off i've said enough,
learned this lesson far too much.
it’ll only bring you down carrying someone around in your head.
and these days, it feels like all I know is her face
and i'm just basking in it’s glow.
yea, these days, it feels like all I know is this phase
I hope i'm basking in the glow…
yes I am basking in the glow…
oh god I’m basking in the glow of something bigger I don’t know.

Lyrics:
79 dollars to my name, staying alive by the sound of yours.
just 79 miles out from your place.
hitching a ride, oh you'll see that i've changed for sure.
that disguise is over, i cant explain the hold up.
my bodys in pensacola, mind's in this gin and soda.
you know, some places aren't quite like you remember.
79 days since god sent her, she says "mistakes dont make who we are"
but 79 less fuck ups in my book brings me to you behind the wheel of a car.
so its 79 lies that ill tell for my seat in hell, all alone at the foot of this bar.
that disguise is over, i cant explain the hold up.
my bodys in pensacola, mind's in this gin and soda.
you know, some places arent quite like you remember.
some faces here, they wear like pretenders.
some days this year, man. they feel never ender.
some places aren't quite like you remember.
