Yard Act - Payday (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.

If you're going to invest in one of the era's many rock cynics, Yard Act singer James Smith's name would be towards the top of the list. Founded in Leeds in 2019, the group has quickly risen in the indie rock ranks thanks to Smith’s caustic and comic commentary of the modern world. The band's universe consists of recurring characters: a strange neighbor (“Fixer Upper”), a man in the fur business (“The Trapper’s Pelts”), and a person who murders a lover with a peanut allergy (“Peanuts”). Even without a full album, the handful of singles made by Smith, bassist Ryan Needham, drummer George Townend, and guitarist Sam Shipstone gives fans plenty to sink their teeth into. Like David Byrne and Morrissey, two front men who led outfits that helped inspire Yard Act's angular post-punk sound, Smith wisely allows plenty of wiggle room when it comes to defining good and bad. “People are fundamentally flawed and that’s really important,” says Smith. “It doesn’t make them bad people.” Also like Byrne, Smith’s herky-jerky stage presence makes the live Yard Act experience that much more kinetic. It’s all here in these performances of “Land Of The Blind” and “Payday,” shot in our London studio. And it’ll certainly all be there on ‘The Overload,’ the debut album that arrives later this month. Keep an eye on these boys, they’ve got plenty to say.

Right, because we had to push it back a few weeks we thought we'd sling you all one more tune off the record by way of an apology / peace offering. This one is called Rich.

It's a hypothetical song about me accidentally becoming rich, and contemplating what I might do with all the power it brings. It's basically saying, c'mon let's have some sympathy for all the millionaires out there, it's tough for them too.

Obviously it ain't really saying that, but as we all know, money doesn't really bring you happiness, and even the rich have feelings to process and therapists to feed. Don't get stuck on simple ideas... Also, i should make it completely clear here that I am in no way defending the rich. They deserve all the stick they get, the rich bastards.

(Unless you're a rich bastard who wants to preorder The Overload)

Het Nederlandse televisieprogramma "Countdown" was van 1976 t/m 1993 “Europe’s Number 1 Rock Show” en werd uitgezonden bij Veronica. Later werd het programma ook uitgezonden in het buitenland en was het op z'n hoogtepunt in meer dan 20 landen op televisie te zien.

Gedurende deze 17 jaar muziekgeschiedenis zijn er opnames gemaakt met talloze internationale sterren, zoals Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, U2, The Police, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, New Order, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, R.E.M., Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Cure, Run DMC, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, New Kids On The Block, LL Cool J.

Uiteraard kwamen Nederlandse top-acts als Doe Maar, Andre Hazes, Herman Brood, Frank Boeijen, Spargo, Golden Earring, Time Bandits, De Dijk, De Raggende Manne, Hans de Booij, Gerard Joling, Drukwerk ook langs voor een optreden in Bussum.

Countdown werd gepresenteerd door oa Lex Harding, Erik de Zwart, Adam Curry, Simone Walraven Wessel van Diepen, Jeroen van Inkel, Rob Stenders, Simone Angel en Jasper Faber.

Het Countdown archief is vrijwel helemaal compleet en sinds 2017 eigendom van het Amerikaanse Reelin’ In The Years Productions (David Peck - https://reelinintheyears.com/) en Double 2 Hilversum (Jan Douwe Kroeske - http://www.double2bv.nl). Het archief bestaat uit meer dan 3.000 analoge mastertapes die allemaal gedigitaliseerd en gearchiveerd zijn.
