Ranked at the top of the charts of the most sampled jazz and soul musicians, at 77, Roy Ayers has inspired several generations of musicians, including @robertglasper, who has made the art of covers a specialty with both volumes of his Black Radio project.

With his Robert Glasper Experiment, a band with a strong connection between jazz and hip hop, he takes on the grand repertoire of the king of vibes. Half way through this fantastic performance, which also includes Pete Rock and Stefon Harris, the group are joined by the soul maestro Bilal a former classmate of Glasper’s at the New School in New York.

About:
Here, Odetta "faces the audience" in this archive concert from 1964, accompanied by Leslie Grinage and Peter Childs. In black and white images, gripping her guitar, Odetta's voice takes us on a journey back in time. Somewhere between folk and blues, the songs follow one another with a regularity and a soothing calmness.

Her story can be heard in the timbre of her voice. Her transition to opera and musicals in the 1940s seems to convey itself through the almost lyrical vocal flights she sometimes indulges in. Elsewhere, her conversion to folk is transmitted through more traditional themes ("Love Proved False"), while her protest period and her commitment to the civil rights movement can be felt in the sincerity of her words ("Mind on Freedom") and in the emotion of her voice.

About:
A trumpet player, singer and jazz composer, Andrea Motis was a revelation at the 2012 Barcelona Jazz Festival, at only 17 years old in her home city, where she was brought on stage by Quincy Jones. Here is Andrea Motis and her quintet at the Moods Club in Zurich, in 2019.

With her gentle contralto voice – which has often drawn comparisons with Norah Jones – she soothes and captivates us with her impeccable accuracy and excellent vocal technique. With eight albums under her belt, Andrea Motis is well on her way to a long and dazzling career. Her quintet is elegantly composed of Josep Traver on guitar, Ignasi Terraza on piano, Esteve Pi on drums and Joan Chamorro, who was once her teacher at the conservatory, on double bass.

They set a good precedent early doors by kicking off with a bit of Nat King Cole. Then, the young singer proceeded to bring jazz standards back to life with her own brand of elegance and simplicity. She also unveiled a few tracks from her most recent album that would be released a few weeks after this concert took place: Do Outro Lado Do Azul on Verve Records.
