Existential dread never sounded more joyful or uplifting than it does in the hands of PUP. Across its catalog of albums, like the appropriately titled Morbid Stuff or The Dream is Over, the Canadian pop-punk group confronts world-weary discontent with deadpan humor, hard-earned wisdom and a lot of heart.

For the group's long-overdue Tiny Desk, PUP (an acronym for Pathetic Use of Potential) rips through five songs, opening with the restlessly hooky "Morbid Stuff," followed by "Robot Writes a Love Song," from 2022's The Unraveling of PUPTheBand, and "Hallways," a driving anthem about staying alive in the face of struggle, if only to take care of your dog.

Outside of the songs, frontman Stefan Babcock doesn't say a word during the set, but beams playfully through much of it, even after he sings, "I've been navigating my way through the mind-numbing reality of a godless existence," from the 2019 track "Kids." The band closes with the pop-leaning "Hunger for Death," from PUP's latest album, Who Will Look After the Dogs? Trying hard not to break character, Babcock leans in with, "F*** everyone in this office," before adding, "especially me."

Many artists who've played the Tiny Desk have come on the strength of their children. Most recently, Marvin Sapp told us, "My kids said that I had to do this." In Sasha Keable's case, it was her dad who introduced her to the Tiny Desk way back when Tom Jones played in 2009. Despite Keable's early goals, she faced a series of music industry setbacks that could have led her to quit. However, her Tiny Desk performance stands as a testament to her resilience, a victory lap in a race that's only just begun.

I discovered Keable through 2019's MAN EP; it instantly took me back to when I first heard Amy Winehouse. The music was raw and her delivery was brash, but the effortless power and range separated her from anything I was listening to. I invited her to the Tiny Desk a few months later, then COVID-19 hit, curbing the opportunity. In 2021, the British Colombian singer-songwriter released Intermission, but last year, everything seemed to click with a long string of singles that connected her with audiences across the pond and in the United States, including Beyoncé, who dropped her name in a GQ magazine interview.

Keable flew over from South London, enlisting the Slim Wav-led Band of Brothas to arrange a medley of bangers from her upcoming EP, act right, as her dad proudly watched on.

On a cold and snowy night this past winter, Sierra Hull and her band brought bluegrass to Washington, D.C. Despite the frigid temperatures outside, barefoot fans danced as if at a summer music festival. Ever since she first picked up the instrument at a young age, the mandolin virtuoso has captivated audiences; it’s no surprise that she still owns the stage two decades later.

At the Tiny Desk months later, her set features four songs from A Tip Toe High Wire, her latest album. “Boom” and “Lord, That’s a Long Way” showcase her incredibly fast, finger-picking abilities. Before performing the third song, Hull tells the audience, “My granny lived such a crazy life in her 80 years that we got to have her. I didn’t get to play this song for her before she passed, but I did tell her I was writing a song for her called ‘Spitfire.’ ” Hull’s granny experienced the Great Depression in rural Tennessee, was widowed twice and buried a son — she lived a life of hardship, but remained resilient and rebellious in the face of it all.

Hull digs deep in her songwriting, admitting that sometimes she doesn't know what a song's about until it's done. That's the undercurrent of "Muddy Water," which encourages its listener to show yourself as you truly are; Hull now knows that she needs to hear that wisdom as much as us.
