Neo-Traditional Country music trio, The Castellows, are bringing a literal meaning to the phrase, “family tradition.” The band comprised of sisters Ellie (lead guitar), Powell (banjo) and Lily (vocals), hail from small rural Georgetown, Georgia, but now call Nashville home. The Castellows’ sound is traditional, yet modern. Authentic, yet harnessed. The common thread among the trio, other than their DNA, is their masterful three-part harmonies which blend together to create one singular, almost angelic, voice. The band began turning heads of music industry insiders in January 2023. When spring arrived, The Castellows had received interest from entities across the entire music industry, including those based in New York, Los Angeles, as well as Nashville. The band spent the summer of 2023 writing, recording, and touring, and it is now time for the three sisters from a cattle farm in Georgia to step on the modern country music stage, times three.

The night before ANOHNI and the Johnsons set up shop behind the Tiny Desk, they gave a soul-searching performance at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. A couple who sat in front of us, who drove in from Ohio, said they played one of ANOHNI's songs at their wedding. Such is the devotion to the immaculately built, singularly sung and emotionally potent music ANOHNI has made throughout her nearly 30-year career.

The same passionate intellect from the live show pours over into this psychologically fissile set of three breathtaking compositions.

Let's be real: ANOHNI's songs ask tough questions. "Why Am I Alive Now?" is ostensibly a lament for the environment, and ends with the line, "All our memories are sinking into un-living," as the band ramps up its heavenly groove, built around propulsive drumming, cascading piano and a plaintive clarinet.

And yet, a song like "Hopelessness," which follows, somehow does not seem entirely pessimistic, thanks to its diaphanous arrangement, which builds to a climax that could be either euphoric, cathartic or both. It's telling us to look at ourselves ("How did I become a virus?").

The soul-flavored "It Must Change" similarly builds, but this time to a purifying truth-to-power oratory that might leave you trembling amid its intoxicating shuffle. The musicianship, a true chamber music integration, is nothing short of sublime.

ANOHNI is a provocative artist — much needed today — who forces us to think where we stand, as individuals, in an ever-churning, chaotic world. Her music, and that distinctive, straight-to-the-heart delivery, invites us to confront our feelings and find a way to own them — and perhaps even to move through them, rendering us even more alive.

"Come on, Tiny D!" Kele Okereke excitedly yelps about a minute into Bloc Party's Tiny Desk concert. The English rock group's members were stoked to pay us a visit during their recent trip across the pond — and we were lucky to have them. They approached the Tiny Desk challenge with ease and delivered a carefully curated set with smiles and all.

This year marks two decades since the release of Bloc Party's enduring debut album. To celebrate, this Tiny Desk set begins with the super catchy and energetic pop anthem "Banquet" from Silent Alarm. The band continues with a couple songs from 2008's Intimacy: the shimmery, glockenspiel-forward "Signs," then "Mercury," where we give a sneak peek of Okereke's vocal effects rig under the Desk. Bloc Party closes with "Blue," a sweet song on the slower side of the band's catalog. It ends quietly, yet powerfully, as Okereke sings, "I fall asleep on your sleeve / with those three words in my dreams."
