Jamey Johnson, who has received 10 Grammy nominations, is “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” according to The Washington Post. He has received tremendous praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal and other publications, many of which have hailed his albums as masterpieces. He is a proud member of the Grand Ole Opry.

His album That Lonesome Song was certified platinum for more than 1 million in sales, and his double album, The Guitar Song, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard country album charts and was certified gold. He also released the Grammy-nominated Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran, which featured performances with Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Ray Price, Elvis Costello, George Strait and Vince Gill.

He is also widely regarded as one of the greatest country songwriters of his generation. He is one of only a few people in the history of country music to win two Song of the Year awards--for “Give It Away” and “In Color”--from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. His songs have been recorded by George Strait, Trace Adkins, Willie Nelson, James Otto, Joe Nichols and others.

He is also an in-demand musical collaborator. He recorded “I Forgive It All” for the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers tribute album, Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, which was released in June. He and Elle Langley recorded “Young Love (Strong Love)” for A Tribute to the Judds that was released in 2023.

He was honored to be invited to turn two of Johnny Cash’s unfinished poems into songs. He completed “Spirit Rider” for the album called Forever Words, and he and Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, turned the late icon’s words into a song called “California Poem.”

The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

In this episode, I describe how your brain and body are fundamentally wired to perceive and respond to music and how those responses can be leveraged to improve your mood, allow for processing sad emotions and enhance learning and performance. I explain the data showing how music can increase motivation for cognitive or physical work, what specific music has been shown to enhance cognitive performance, and whether silence or music is more effective in enhancing focus while studying. I also discuss how specific musical pieces can rapidly reduce anxiety, as well as certain prescription medications. I explain how listening to certain types of music can improve various health metrics (e.g., heart rate). Finally, I discuss how music helps to enhance neuroplasticity (rewiring of brain connections), thereby improving learning and memory. Whether you sing, play an instrument or enjoy listening to music, this episode provides numerous science-informed tools for using music to enhance productivity, mood, emotional states, and overall enjoyment of life.
