Memphis Bleek on Jay-Z, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Biggie, Tupac, Dame Dash, Michael Jackson, Kevin Hart Hotney 10 Streams • 1 year ago

Memphis Bleek joins Shannon Sharpe at Club Shay Shay to perform a track from his new album Apartment 3D before diving into his journey from the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn to hip-hop history. Raised by a single mother and stepfather, Bleek recalls growing up watching his mom struggle and his determination to change his family dynamic. He thought basketball, baseball, or even art would be his path, until writing lyrics became his true calling. Growing up in the same building as Jay-Z, his first job was walking Jay’s nephews to school for $100 a week. He shares memories of the projects, losing friends, and respect for older generations who disciplined kids whether related or not.

Bleek reflects on idolizing Nino Brown before Jay-Z told him to quit hustling and focus on music. Though not blood brothers, he says Jay-Z raised him alongside Dame Dash, Biggs, Clark Kent, and cousin Bee High. He explains why Brooklyn breeds stars like The Notorious B.I.G., Lil’ Kim, Fabolous, Big Daddy Kane, ODB, Joey Bada$$, and Pop Smoke. He remembers meeting Biggie during the “Brooklyn’s Finest” session with Jay-Z and visiting Biggie’s New Jersey mansion with elevators and Land Cruisers, which inspired him to believe success through music was possible. He admits his pen was never as sharp as Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas, or Tupac, and recalls being devastated by Biggie’s death.

He describes Jay-Z’s life in the projects as “royalty” with an air conditioner, waterbed, and white carpet. His mother was best friends with Jay’s sister, and Bleek always knew Jay was destined for greatness. Watching Jay-Z evolve into a businessman, he says Hov has long planned to retire from rap and hasn’t felt challenged since Eminem, Big Pun, Biggie, and Tupac. Bleek recalls freestyling for Jay-Z during the Reasonable Doubt era, seeing Jay write “Sunshine” in 30 minutes, and realizing he was hand-picked. Reasonable Doubt changed Bleek’s life, giving him money to support his mom and allowing him to buy a house in New Jersey at 17.

Bleek credits Dame Dash with saving him from a bad management deal but explains why Jay-Z will never “save” Dame now. He calls Roc-A-Fella’s breakup the worst day of his life, caused by egos, lack of focus, and fights over credit. He names Roc-A-Fella the greatest rap label ever, with Cash Money, Death Row, No Limit, Ruff Ryders, and Def Jam rounding out his top five. He shares Kanye West memories, Rihanna’s early career, and calls Rihanna an anomaly. He talks about rap beefs from Tupac vs. Biggie to Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake, praising “Not Like Us” as the greatest diss record he’s ever seen.

Bleek recalls turning down beats like Joe Budden’s “Pump It Up,” Barbara Streisand quoting him in a diss to Donald Trump, and being starstruck by Michael Jackson. He performed for Nelson Mandela, worked with Destiny’s Child, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott, and says Beyoncé is the closest thing to Michael Jackson. He praises Kevin Hart as the funniest person he’s met, likening him to Eddie Murphy, and remembers hanging with Nick Cannon, Serena Williams, and Meagan Good.

Bleek agrees with Fat Joe that rappers live paycheck to paycheck and opens up about marriage, fatherhood, and why focusing on friendships hurt his career. He says Jay-Z always has his back but egos destroy empires. From Marcy Projects to Roc-A-Fella Records, Memphis Bleek’s story is one of loyalty, lessons, and legacy.

LYRICS:

Tell me what you need, bae
What you want.
I'm with anything, bae.
Let me know.
Cause I would do it all for you.
Anything you want me to.
Whatever you want for you.

What is on your mind?
Talk to me in private.
Gotta have your mind right if you gon' be mine.
All I want is your attention, I'm practicing lines.
Always gon' complete the mission, give me my assignment.
And nobody saw the vision back when I was grinding.
All I needed was the riches, I ain't care for shining.
When you questioned me about bitches thought that was behind us.
Never given all my time, but I could buy you diamonds.
Whatever you want, go and get it, I'm supplying it.
Search it all you want, and I promise you gon' find it.
Chanel bag, Birkin bag, Prada bag, foreign rides, paper tags.
I just want some shit I never had.

Tell me what you need, bae
What you want.
I'm with anything, bae.
Let me know.
Cause I would do it all for you.
Anything you want me to.
Whatever you want for you.

I was getting money as a kid.
Been on drugs since a kid.
Needed love when I was a kid.
I been a thug since a kid.
Seen my brother in the casket, they put slugs in his head.
A lot of shit that made me numb, I keep a gun and I ain't scared.
Thinking back on what I done, ain't ducking nothing but the feds.
I was crying inside the ride before I walked up in the crib.
I ain't tell you how I felt, I needed a hug but you was wigging.
Probably should go seek some help, but who gon' take care of my business?
I be taking from myself before I make it, I give it.
I ain't never hear, thank you. I regret I ever did it.
Better not ever say I'm selfish just for love. I'm spending millions.
Want support, don't feel shit. But I ain't trippin' about shit.
Ya still get it

Tell me what you need, bae
What you want.
I'm with anything, bae.
Let me know.
Cause I would do it all for you.
Anything you want me to.
Whatever you want for you

LYRICS
RITA WROTE A LETTER
I really don’t know how I’m talking
Six feet down and under the clay
The laws of nature forbid it
But I was never good with rules anyway
The day I walked out of prison
I knew that I was still in stir
For the crime committed I was still doing time
Behind the walls between me and her

Rita wrote a letter
I keep it with me every day
Rita wrote a letter
And this is what she had to say
She said, ‘Joe I’m really sorry
But me and Dan, our love is here to stay
With the kids it’s getting better
And now a little baby’s on the way’

Well, they took me back on at the restaurant
But the new cook there had stolen my game
They put me on the dishes and the pots and pans
I was happy being busy again
And every night when I came home
With my back and feet all aching sore
I‘d lay there in Mary’s spare room
Tossing ‘til the break of dawn

Oh, Rita wrote a letter
One you don’t want to get from your wife
When Rita writes a letter
The pen is sharper than the knife
She said, ‘Joe, I gave you good chances
But half a year turned into two
You could never hold your temper
And you always made it all about you'

Oh, the phone calls they started to dwindle
Once they moved further up the coast
Those silences that dragged on forever
I couldn’t find the words I needed the most
One day I went to see an old friend
And I brought a little package home
For old times’ sake sweet oblivion
But some things you shouldn’t do alone

Yeah, Rita wrote a letter
I’m still hugging it under the clay
Rita wrote a letter
Deep down I know it’s better this way
And maybe she and Dan feel guilty
And the children sometimes cry at night
But I made my bed, I’m lying in it
And I know they’re gonna be alright

Oh, Rita wrote a letter
I will always love her
Be the ghost above her
Hover all around her
But Dan, I don’t forgive you
Oh, I didn’t mean to say that
It’s just my mind it plays up
Multiplies each matter
