The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Oct. 1, 2020 | Bobby Carter -- In this Tiny Desk (home) concert, R&B star Jhené Aiko coasts through an eight-song medley that plays like the ultimate nod to her legions of fans — fans who've been begging for a Tiny Desk for a long time.

The Los Angeles native's star status is a result of her music's versatility and vulnerability. Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo has carved out a space of her own over the past decade, despite a rapidly changing R&B landscape. As a songwriter, she leaves no stone unturned, explicitly expressing her struggle, joy and sexuality while always administering the vibe.

Her latest album, Chilombo, released just before the pandemic hit the U.S., doubled down and leaned into the therapeutic nature of her songs — and that same aesthetic fuels her Tiny Desk. Backed by an ensemble of masked players, Aiko bookends her set with a sound bath of singing bowls that's peace personified through sound.

Jan. 27, 2020 | Sidney Madden -- "It's been a fairly short musical journey and we have seen fairly much success," Koffee told the NPR Music offices between songs during her Tiny Desk set. Flashing her braces with each grin, Jamaica's 19-year old tour de force wasn't exaggerating. Her debut EP, Rapture, just won a 2020 Grammy for Best Reggae Album, making her the first woman and the youngest artist to ever win in the category. It comes just two years after her tribute song to sprinter, eight-time Gold Medalist and fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt went viral online. Koffee has sustained a steady upwards momentum since then, finding her footing on festival stages and collaborating with others outside her genre. (Her latest single, "W" features Atlanta rapper, Gunna.)

Above all, what makes Koffee so refreshing is that she centers her music around faith, resilience and gratitude. She has a new perspective to add to the pantheon of mostly male reggae greats and it's resonating with a new generation that's just getting hip to the iconic sounds. As her Tiny Desk performance shows, Koffee makes the best of her surroundings, channeling the day's buzzy energy into a balancing act of youthful heart and old-pro precision, proving why she has become one of the most invigorating voices in reggae.

"I want to thank everybody who's been involved," Koffee told the crowd halfway during her show. "You have now become a part of my journey."

The home team is in the building with us for this debut L.A. Leakers Freestyle 155 featuring TDE’s own, Ab-Soul.

Gearing up for the release of his ‘Herbert’ album, the Carson native pulled up to deliver a two-piece freestyle as a first-time emcee on the Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk featured series. Taking on the iconic tracks from two of hip-hop’s most legendary voices, 2Pac’s “Hit ‘Em Up” and Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya,” Ab wasted no time with his wordplay and let his lyrical prowess speak for itself.

“I ain’t trippin’ off of y’all Top 5, save your statements, all your documents are falsified,” spits the Cali native. “We the mafia of the West, I know K.Dot left. That’s still my partner in crime, respect the family ties," he continues.

Ab-Soul definitely laced freestyle 155 with the TDE energy.

Lyrics :

You don’t understand my position like I know you never could

You’d see it if you looked

my way

other pussy got you

they got you hooked but I’m not dumb

like you really tried to play me

then you go and call me crazy oh

how you gonna switch up when I’m not around

used to have our pictures hanging all around

I can switch it up don't get it fucked up

I can switch it up don't get it fucked up

You said that you miss me

You won’t hear no sound

Talking to me crazy

Don’t you see my crown

I could switch it up dont get it fucked up

I could switch it up dont get it fucked up

Take a seat

And let me humble you

Disrespecting me is something that you ain’t gone do yeah

Boy an ain’t nobody fumble you

Cuz what you don’t won't do

Another man is gonna do

its me for me wondering like what you ever for me

Don’t get it confused

I’ve always been that bitch

I was her before I met you

Never thought that I was better I just knew that I was different

My shit be moving cause I'm moving with a mission

I don't take a break no I don't take no intermissions

Caught em all slipping

Keep them bitches wishing on me

Cause I'm a star diamonds on my neck you see em from a far

When its comes to you

You wasn't up to par

You couldn't play your part

Now look at where you are

how you gonna switch up when I’m not around

used to have our pictures hanging all around

I can switch it up don't get it fucked up

I can switch it up don't get it fucked up

You said that you miss me

You won’t hear no sound

Talking to me crazy

Don’t you see my crown

I could switch it up dont get it fucked up

I could switch it up dont get it fucked up

Verso
Te amo demasiado
Pero no quiero quererte porque me duele
A ti te vale madre que yo este aquí
Derramando cada lagrima por ti
Y ya no quiero llorar
Y me voy quitar
El tatuaje que tenemos de la eternidad
Me enamoraste y lo hiciste muy bien
Tantas señales que no quise ver..

Coro
Lo siento en el alma
Y sube a mi pecho
Las ganas de irme, no pienses seguirme
Lo hecho está hecho
Nacen del luto
Unas lindas flores
Seguro lo oíste
Te curan lo triste,
Las MILAMORES

[Gera MX]
Otra vez…

Coro
Lo siento en el alma
Y sube a mi pecho
Las ganas de irme, no pienses seguirme
Lo hecho está hecho
Nacen del luto
Unas lindas flores
Seguro lo oíste
Te curan lo triste,
Las MILAMORES.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, NPR Music presents four very special Tiny Desk Home Concerts recorded especially for this week.

Felix Contreras | October 14, 2020
Vocalist Carlos Vives kicks things off in high gear on this Tiny Desk (home) concert with his trademark sound: a celebration of the music from his beloved home country of Colombia, mixed with rock and other Latin music style.

Spirited champeta dance grooves from the country’s Pacific coast permeate his classic 1995 hit “Pa’ Mayte,” and if you look closely you’ll see two of his backup vocalists also playing traditional gaitas Colombianas (flutes). They are used to spectacular effect as a transition between the title cut of his new album Colombiana and “La Bicicleta” (originally recorded with his compatriot Shakira), a vallenato fueled by a bit of reggaeton.

Presenting Carlos Vives has special resonance this week as his latest album recently picked up six Latin Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

Felicidades, Carlitos! And oye, adding that NPR coffee mug to your desk? Nice touch!

https://www.hypeplustv.com/ - Keke Palmer and Usher appear to have found another way capitalize on the now viral moment of them dancing together. If you can recall, Palmer's boyfriend Darius Jackson would voice his concern with her attire while attending an Usher concert, and social media would speak out against his position. Fast forward, social media has now spoken up against Palmer's decision to further work with Usher for his newest music video called 'Boyfriend'. Symphony Thompson reports. Oct. 18, 2017 | Bobby Carter -- Thundercat, born Stephen Bruner, is willing and able to shape-shift to fit into just about any box you show him — he just won't stay in there for long. Whether fusing his talent for jazz while a bassist with punk legacy act Suicidal Tendencies or as a member of Snoop Dogg's band — maybe running a little too far with a solo here and there — the focus seems to eventually drift his way.

After releasing two brilliant solo albums, he was plucked to work on what eventually became one of the most important works of art released this decade: Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly. Capitalizing off of the new exposure, he quickly released the EP The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam. That was followed about two years later by Drunk, his most solid project to date.

I didn't know what to expect in the days leading to the performance, but I was hoping to get what I thought a Thundercat experience would be like. All boxes ended up checked: He arrived wearing a neon pink hoodie with his signature logo plastered about, kickboxing shorts, white chancletas, playing a Nintendo portable gaming console. He and his bandmates Dennis Hamm, Justin Brown and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, all master musicians in their own right, polished off some bacon croissant sandwiches and proceeded to give us three of the best of what Drunk has to offer.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Abby O'Neill | November 16, 2020
Enter the unassuming and innately talented Michael Kiwanuka from a "rainy London" flat that's dimly lit with a vintage feel. The Mercury Prize-winning musician evokes an all-encompassing softness in spirit as he leads viewers into the "Light," the first of five songs in his Tiny Desk (home) concert. The warm texture of his voice and tenderness of his soul belie the depth of his songwriting, which ranges from sociopolitical works to songs revealing the inner chambers of self-exploration. Featuring material from both Love & Hate and his more recent award-winning Kiwanuka, this is an absolutely stunning performance.
