MF DOOM: The Rap GOAT (Part 1) Hotney 13 Vues • 2 années depuis

This is my video essay on the artist MF DOOM. In terms of finding an artist whose talent in their field was unmatched, no one can look past the unbelievable virtuosity of this true rap icon. MF DOOM was about the art and just the art alone. He was as pure as you could get. He was your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper.

But despite his talent, MF DOOM wasn’t the most popular.

While legends of rap came and went, MF DOOM lurked amongst the background, toiling away and always being prolific. It was in the underground world where he thrived, and his discography extended vast beyond his reach from not just his own releases but also through the hundreds of collaborations with others.

So, how could someone be so prolific yet still never reach the heights of success like others in his field?

This is my video exploring this man’s great body of work.

Who is MF DOOM?

Daniel Dumile best known by his stage name MF DOOM or simply DOOM (both stylized in all caps), was a British-American rapper and record producer. Noted for his intricate wordplay, signature metal mask, and "supervillain" stage persona, Dumile became a major figure of underground hip hop and alternative hip hop in the 2000s. After his death, Variety described him as one of the scene's "most celebrated, unpredictable and enigmatic figures".

Dumile was born in London and moved to Long Island, New York, at a young age. He began his career in 1988 as a member of KMD, performing as Zev Love X. The group disbanded in 1993 after the death of member DJ Subroc, Dumile's brother. After a hiatus, Dumile reemerged in the late 1990s. He began performing at open mic events while wearing a metal mask resembling that of the Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Doom, who is depicted on the cover of his 1999 debut solo album Operation: Doomsday. He adopted the MF Doom persona and rarely made unmasked public appearances thereafter.

Between 2003 and 2005, Dumile released four solo albums and three collaborative albums. In addition to the critically acclaimed Mm..Food (2004) under the MF Doom moniker, he released solo albums including one under the pseudonym King Geedorah and two as Viktor Vaughn. Madvillainy (2004), recorded with the producer Madlib under the name Madvillain, is often cited as Dumile's magnum opus and is regarded as a landmark album in hip hop. In 2005, Dumile released The Mouse and the Mask with the producer Danger Mouse as Danger Doom.

In 1997 or 1998, Dumile began freestyling incognito at open-mic events at the Nuyorican Poets Café in Manhattan, obscuring his face by putting tights over his head. He turned this into a new identity, MF Doom, with a mask similar to that of Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Doom. He later used a mask based on the character Maximus from the 2000 film Gladiator.
Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em Records released Operation: Doomsday, Dumile's first full-length LP as MF Doom, in 1999. Dumile's collaborators on Operation: Doomsday included fellow members of the Monsta Island Czars collective, for which each artist took on the persona of a monster from the Godzilla films. Dumile went by the alias "King Geedorah", a three-headed golden dragon space monster modeled after King Ghidorah.

The album's productions sampled cartoons including Fantastic Four. Jon Caramanica, in a review of Operation: Doomsday for Spin, emphasized the contrast between Dumile's flow as Zev Love X in KMD and his revised approach as a solo artist: "Doom's flow is muddy, nowhere near the sprightly rhymes of KMD's early days, and his thought process is haphazard."

And if you’re still reading this – hello.

Lyrics:
My trainer tells his clients he’s a shaman
We smoke some DMT before we bench
My diet’s strictly protein shakes and ramen
So we make sure to purge after we stretch

I’m Mr. Los Angeles
The rumors are true
Out on the bleeding edge of fashion
I’m Mr. Los Angeles
I’m calling for you
This is where the magic happens

My therapist confirms that I’m a victim
It’s everyone around me that is bad
Using words like “toxic” and “intentions”
And every session ends with “this was rad”

I’m Mr. Los Angeles
The rumors are true
Leave your comment underneath the caption
I’m Mr. Los Angeles
I’m calling for you
This is where the magic happens

I just booked a Taco Bell commercial
I eat a bag of cheese without my hands
My agent thinks it’s slightly controversial
It’s not great for the image of my band

I’m Mr. Los Angeles
The rumors are true
Behind every good man there’s a mansion
I’m Mr. Los Angeles
I’m calling for you
This is where the magic happens

I have a friend who wouldn’t name his children
He says that it requires their consent
The oldest says he likes to go by “kitchen”
The baby thinks her name is “made a mess”

I’m Mr. Los Angeles
The rumors are true
The only way to make it here is Fountain
I’m Mr. Los Angeles
I’m calling for you
This is where the magic happens

I’m Mr. Los Angeles
The rumors are true
Every vegan sleeps in sheets of satin
I’m Mr. Los Angeles
I’m calling for you
This is where the magic happens

Fat Joe On Losing $20M Deal, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, NFL, Ozempic & Media Career Hotney 13 Vues • 2 années depuis

Fat Joe kicks off his conversation with Shannon Sharpe at Club Shay Shay by joking that he wants to be like Snoop Dogg. He shares his upbringing, explaining that he just wanted to escape poverty. Joe tells pivotal stories from his upbringing like when his best friend abandoned him to side with attackers, being shot at by the same guy eight times in two days, how hip hop saved his life, and being framed for three murders by the cops.

Joe reflects on the deaths of modern rappers like Nipsey Hussle, Pop Smoke, and PnB Rock, comparing them to Tupac and Biggie Smalls. He stresses that people need to come together, just like Jay-Z and DJ Khaled, and comments on Michael Rubin’s controversial remarks. He adds that he tries to inspire youth through his flexing rather than tear the community apart.

The conversation then transitions to the Drake vs Kendrick Lamar beef, to which Fat Joe jokes that he doesn’t want anyone to kill him after his interview with Shannon for his opinion on the matter. He says if he were Drake, he’d be confused. He highlights how the song is nominated for multiple Grammys and believes it will become an all-time classic. Joe likens the public’s fascination with the beef to watching football and believes Drake can make everyone forget about the feud depending on how he responds.

Fat Joe recalls attempting to squash the beef between Ja Rule and 50 Cent, saying they should have ended it by now. He expresses hope that Young Thug will be released from jail so he can take care of his loved ones again. Joe recounts losing a $20 million Jordan Brand endorsement due to his feud with 50 Cent, revealing it wasn’t the only financial hit he took because of beefs—he also lost money beefing with Jay-Z. He warns young rappers that the Feds are watching rappers’ crews and pinning it back on the artist, referencing Bobby Shmurda’s situation. Lastly, Joe praises Jay-Z for doing great work with the NFL but understands why Lil Wayne is upset about not performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans.

Fat Joe criticizes J. Cole for not responding to the beef aimed at him revolving around the Drake vs Kendrick feud, saying he would have responded himself. Joe calls DJ Khaled his angel, supporting Khaled's message about spreading love and positivity. Joe shares a personal story about talking his friend out of suicide after his wife cheated on him, noting that trusting in God saved the man’s life.

He mentions using Ozempic for diabetes, which he’s had since he was 13, and how Big Pun’s death motivated him to work out so intensely that he reversed his diabetes. Joe proudly talks about being married for 30 years, and how his wife held him down while he was in prison. He explains how they’ve stayed together through thick and thin. Joe discusses his son, who has autism and Down syndrome, and how initially he wasn’t ready to be a father. Joe calls his son his biggest blessing.

As the episode draws to a close, Fat Joe talks about his close relationship with Jennifer Lopez. He declares that women in Atlanta are running hip hop. Joe reveals that Eminem once wanted him to sign him and mentions that he also missed the opportunity to sign Pitbull and Rick Ross. He explains how the Black and Brown communities can come together. This episode, Fat Joe offers insight, laughter, and reflection, showcasing the highs and lows of his career and personal life, leaving viewers with a deeper understanding of the legendary rapper’s journey and mindset.

Inside Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n' Sweet’ Tour Looks | Vogue Hotney 13 Vues • 2 années depuis

While getting ready for her hometown show in Philadelphia, Sabrina Carpenter and stylist Jared Ellner break down all the looks they’ve come up with for Sabrina's "Short n' Sweet" tour. Sabrina and Jared consistently mine the past for inspiration, incorporating babydoll dresses reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot and 1960s fashion, Marilyn Monroe-inspired catsuits, and ABBA-esque skirts. The show, which emulates everything from a morning bath to a date-night evening, unfolds over the course of a fictional day. With outfit changes in three acts featuring designs from Victoria’s Secret, Patou, and Ludovic de Saint Sernin, the wardrobe plays alongside the concert's central conceit, evolving as time unfurls.

Lyrics:

Hook:
you lift me up
you know my name
you fill my cup
I'll never be the same
this light of mine
I'll let it shine
cause you know my name
I'll never be the same again

Verse 1:
it's been a while since we talked last
let's keep it real
it seems like everyone's forgotten
but you never will
this life’s a rocky path
that we all move along
still putting flowers by my grave
but you don't stay as long
friends come and go
but i ain’t coming back
it took you 8 months and a therapist to finally come to terms with that
journal every morning
every dream that you run into me
might not hear my voice again
but I'll always be listening
So listen one last time
as you reading this letter
happiest I've ever been
was when we promised forever
honeymoon was in July
then i left in September
know that God still has plan
though we no longer together

Hook:
you lift me up
you know my name
you fill my cup
I'll never be the same
this light of mine
I'll let it shine
cause you know my name
I'll never be the same again

Verse 2:
you told me you couldn't keep living if I died first
I told you God will get you through it
that's how life works
nobody knew me like you did
you could read my thoughts
You were the first to know I'm sick
you felt that somethings off
it started out with a cough
but every day it got deeper
doctors said I'd get better
but I just kept getting weaker
all our dreams put to an end
a final kiss goodbye
now I'll keep waiting for eternity
so take your time

Hook:
you lift me up
you know my name
you fill my cup
I'll never be the same
this light of mine
I'll let it shine
cause you know my name
I'll never be the same again

Verse 3
it won't be the same
but it gets easier
keep doing your best
follow the spirit
Jesus gave you
angels guiding your steps
left a piece of me with you
and you’ve been watching it grow
two months until the day
you bring our little girl home
momma and daughter matching outfits
a Christmas alone
missing the feeling of me there
so you still spray my cologne
pushing your stroller through the snow
days are quick to get dark
no one to shovel out the car
so it's been staying in park
don't feel like you're betraying me
by going on dates
single motherhood is heavy
might need help with the weight
keep on singing to our baby
show her pictures of us
as she grows up you can tell her
about the man that I was
