“I wrote ‘You Can Be Mean’ about a brief toxic experience I had with a manipulative and abusive LA model fuckboy. However brief, it had a life-long impact on my understanding of self,” Indigo explains. “Leading up to that experience, I had a history of putting myself in toxic situations and pining for validation from people who treated me poorly. I was stuck in some delusion that I could help abusive people through their trauma and teach them to love me in the way I deserved. I wrote this song when I finally realized that I could choose not to allow harmful behavior into my life, and that there is a deep, deep importance in protecting the body and spirit. I stopped caring about validation from assholes, stopped thinking it was my responsibility to help them, and started caring for myself in a real way. Once I made that switch in my psyche, I began to manifest truly loving, safe, kind, and communicative people into my life. Being loved in the way I deserve begins with loving myself in the way I deserve. Boundaries are so important. The body is a sacred and fragile thing and it deserves every ounce of care.”

Bob Marley and the Wailers were in the Netherlands during his "Rastaman Vibrations" tour for his first Dutch concert in the Jaap Edenhal in Amsterdam on June 13, 1976, the first of the five concerts Marley ever gave in the Netherlands. During this concert 'Roots, Rock, Reggae' was the last song on the set and 'Positive Vibration' was the first encore. The concert ended with 'Get Up Stand Up / War / No More Trouble'.
Fortunately, the Toppop recordings have been preserved. They have been used by director Kevin Macdonald for his famous and acclaimed documentary about Bob Marley, entitled 'Marley' from 2012.
This exclusive Toppop video was recorded in a studio in Nederhorst den Berg near Hilversum in June 1976.
The recording is, as most Toppop videos, a lip-synch recording.
Bunny Wailer is not in this video as he left the Wailers two years earlier.

During the recording process, Tina Turner's commitment to delivering an exceptional performance was unwavering. In Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Songs, she revealed the sheer intensity of the recording sessions, stating, "I must have sung that 500,000 times. I was drenched with sweat. I had to take my shirt off and stand there in my bra to sing." Such was the level of dedication Turner poured into the song, leaving an indelible mark on her artistic journey. "River Deep - Mountain High" expressed a love that surpassed the boundaries of any river or mountain. This overwhelming devotion resonated deeply with audiences, capturing their hearts and leaving an enduring impression. "S.O.S." is a song from the Swedish pop group ABBA– Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus. It was their second single from their album ABBA. The song, first called 'Turn me on', was later recorded by Agnetha Fältskog as a solo artist. She sang the song in Swedish on her solo album 'Elva kvinnor i ett hus' (1975). "S.O.S." is written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and manager Stig Anderson. The title was chosen by Stig. The texts he had offered were rewritten by Ulvaeus. The song reached #2 in the Dutch Top 40 in June 1975. It also reached the Top2000 in 1999 and stayed in the Top2000 for all consecutive years. This is the last recording made by Toppop of ABBA. It was first broadcast on 13 June 1975. Forty years after the bitter songs written in the wake of two band divorces for their last album, 1981’s The Visitors, the Swedish pop quartet reunited for Voyage, an album of brand new songs that were released on 5 November 2021.

Kim Wilde (born Kim Smith, 18 November 1960) is an English pop singer, DJ and television presenter. She first saw success in 1981 with her debut single "Kids in America", which reached number two in the UK. In 1983, she received the Brit Award for Best British Female solo artist. In 1986, she had a UK number two hit with a reworked version of the Supremes' song "You Keep Me Hangin' On", which also topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. Between 1981 and 1996, she had 25 singles reach the Top 50 of the UK singles chart. Her other hits include "Chequered Love" (1981), "You Came" (1988) and "Never Trust a Stranger" (1988). In 2003, she collaborated with Nena on the song "Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime", which topped the Dutch charts.

Worldwide, Wilde has sold over 10 million albums and 20 million singles. She holds the record for being the most-charted British female solo act of the 1980s, with seventeen UK Top 40 hit singles. Starting in 1998, while still active in music, she has branched into an alternative career as a landscape gardener, which has included presenting gardening shows on the BBC and Channel 4. Anita Ward (born December 20, 1957) is an American singer and musician. She is best known for her 1979 million-selling chart-topper "Ring My Bell".
"Ring My Bell" is a 1979 disco song written by Frederick Knight. The song was originally written for then eleven-year-old Stacy Lattisaw, as a teenybopper song about kids talking on the telephone. When Lattisaw signed with a different label, Anita Ward was asked to sing it instead, and it became her only major hit.

"Ring My Bell" went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the Disco Top 80 chart and the Soul Singles chart. It also reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It also garnered Ward a nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1980 Grammy Awards.
In the Netherlands the single reached no.2 in the Dutch Top 40 on August 11, 1979.

"(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" is a song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and first recorded by his group, Soul Brothers Six, in 1967, peaking at number 91 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The best known version is by Grand Funk Railroad from 1974, when they recorded the song for the group's album 'All the Girls in the World Beware!!!', reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 22, 1975. It also ranked number 6 on Billboard's Hot 100 year-end chart for 1975 as shown on the December 27, 1975, print edition of Billboard, which contained the Hot 100 for 1975.
Their version of the song appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the fictitious radio station K-DST.

Gabriele Susanne Kerner (born 24 March 1960), better known as Nena, is a German singer-songwriter, actress, and comedian who rose to international fame in 1983 as the eponymous lead vocalist of the band Nena with the Neue Deutsche Welle song "99 Luftballons". In the same year the band re-recorded this song in English as "99 Red Balloons". Nena's re-recording of some of the band's old hit songs as a solo artist, produced by the co-composer of most of them, her former Nena band colleague and keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, rekindled her solo career in 2002. Combined with the success of the Nena band years, she has sold over 25 million records, making her one of Germany's most successful music artists.
This Toppop recording of 'Fragezeichen' (German for 'question mark') was first broadcast on January 5, 1984. The single reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40 in January 1984.

We could not think of a more appropriate song for times like these when there is a street curfew at 21.00 hrs in the Netherlands this week.

Juliane Werding (born 19 July 1956 in Essen) is a German singer and alternative therapy practitioner (Heilpraktiker).
Her recordings include "Am Tag, als Conny Kramer starb" and "Nacht voll Schatten" in 1983 (German cover of Mike Oldfield's "Moonlight Shadow"). "Am Tag, als Conny Kramer starb" is the tune of the American song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band with new lyrics about a different subject. Werding wrote several books and lives in Starnberg near Munich, where she works in alternative therapy. She has two children. In 2009, she quit the show business to focus on working as a Heilpraktiker.

This song was first broadcast by Toppop on 12 April 1984 and reached # 14 in the Dutch Top 40 on 12 May 1984.
In her own Germany this song only reached #24 in the charts.

The Three Degrees is an American female vocal group, which was originally formed in 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The original members were Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. Porter and Turner were soon replaced by Janet Harmon and Helen Scott. The line-up from 1967 to 1976 was Pinkney, Valerie Holiday and Sheila Ferguson, who would go on to sing lead on most of the group's biggest hits.
This performance in the Netherlands was recorded and broadcast in the program 'Miss Holland' on January 4, 1974.
'Dirty Ole' Man reached no. 1 in the Dutch Top 40 (and consequently also no. 1 in the Belgian charts). Also it charted in Germany (#34) but did not reach the Billboard Top 100.

Because the original tape was in a bad state, this is the best we could do digitizing this tape, so unfortunately we have to live with this quality, our apologies!

The Paper Dolls were a late 1960s British female vocal trio, from Northampton, comprising lead vocalist Susie 'Tiger' Mathis, Pauline 'Spyder' Bennett and Sue 'Copper' Marshall.
They appeared some years before similar recording acts such as Bananarama and Atomic Kitten became commonplace. Anticipating the Spice Girls, each member of the group had a nickname.

"Something Here in My Heart"
Signed to Pye Records, Paper Dolls had one solitary success. The song, "Something Here in My Heart (Keeps A-Tellin’ Me No)", which was their debut single, and was written by Tony Macaulay and John Macleod, reached Number 11 in the UK Singles Chart in 1968. The enduring image of the Paper Dolls, as seen, for example, on BBC Television's Top of the Pops, was inescapably that of three young women in miniskirts, the popularity and brevity of which were at their height at the time. Moreover, the name of the group was itself suggestive of "dolly birds", a rather impersonal term which, in the 1970s, journalist Christopher Booker associated with "girls [being] transformed into throwaway plastic objects"
