Seeing Amy Winehouse’s final on stage performance gave me a picture of what it must feel like to reach the level you’re one of the biggest artist in the world. "In The Mood" is one of the best-known musical themes of the 1940s and one of the big band era's most recognizable songs. The song was the biggest hit of 1940 WHC and of Miller's career. The song went through several others' hands before it ended up with Miller.

This song was based on a song called "Tar Paper Stomp" which was recorded in 1930 by Joseph "Wingy" Manone, who was a bandleader from New Orleans. This song was written by the Tin Pan Alley composers Joe Garland (music) and Andy Razaf (lyrics). "In The Mood" is an expression that indicates a desire to have sex. It was pretty innocent at the time, but a little racy.

Miller recorded it in 1939, and the song became wildly popular in early 1940, shortly before Billboard began publishing its "Music Popularity Chart." This makes it hard to gauge the song's appeal at the time, but it helped Miller become the top bandleader in the world - in that first Billboard chart, he held down three of the Top 10 places.

Glenn Miller was an American big band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best-known big bands. Miller's notable recordings include "Moonlight Serenade," "In the Mood," "Tuxedo Junction," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "A String of Pearls," "At Last," "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo," "American Patrol," and "Little Brown Jug."

"In The Mood" is a well-known and iconic song from the big band era, and the biggest hit of Glenn Miller's career. Miller was one of the most successful bandleaders of his time, and his recordings continue to be popular today.

"In The Still Of The Night" is a classic doo-wop song with an unusual origin story. The song was written by Fred Parris, a member of The Five Satins, while he was travelling by train between Philadelphia and his hometown of New Haven.

The song talks about holding a girl close on a night in May and hoping to be with her again. Parris wrote the song about a former girlfriend he was hoping would return to him, but she never did.

The song was recorded in the basement of St. Bernadette Church in the group's hometown of New Haven, Connecticut. They used the church piano along with drums, a guitar, a cello tuned low for the bass sound, and a saxophone. The church basement had great acoustics and was insulated from ambient noise, making it a perfect place to record.

The Five Satins were managed by Marty Kugell, who distributed their material on his own label, Standord Records. "In The Still Of The Night" became one of the most famous songs in doo-wop history.

The Five Satins were a fluid group, and their lineup had a lot to do with who was available, as some of the members were in the military. In this song, only four members of the group recorded it, but they called themselves The Five Satins because that was the trend at the time.

The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

In this clip from People's Party, host Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh talk with House of Pain frontman Everlast about his mega-hit "Jump Around." Everlast shares the backstory of the song -- including the fact that Ice Cube passed on the beat. He also addresses the source of what just might be the world's most controversial sample. When Kweli remarks on the fact that the track launched around the same time as Kriss Kross's "Jump," Everlast tells the story of rushing their song onto the radio after learning that Joe Nicolo, co-founder of Ruffhouse Records, had heard the track and created a similar beat and theme for Kriss Kross.

For the deep hip-hop heads, Everlast's story of having Pete Rock on the track's remix is a must-see, as is the story of Pete's only time performing with House of Pain live.

*I think i've finally established that the medley should be from their 71 appearance and not 72, even though there's conflicting information out there, on the wiki for the unreleased masters album (that features the audio from this tv appearance) it lists both the medley and never can say goodbye as being from the 1971 show.

I added the HQ audio from the unreleased masters album, as this is the recording from this show. You might notice that some parts are slightly different though, I assume this is because they would perform a few takes of it and then edit them together, I've made it work the best I could.

A musical instrument is a device created or adapted to make musical sounds. In principle, any object that produces sound can be considered a musical instrument—it is through purpose that the object becomes a musical instrument. The history of musical instruments dates to the beginnings of human culture. Early musical instruments may have been used for ritual, such as a horn to signal success on the hunt, or a drum in a religious ceremony. Cultures eventually developed composition and performance of melodies for entertainment. Musical instruments evolved in step with changing applications and technologies.
The date and origin of the first device considered a musical instrument is disputed. The oldest object that some scholars refer to as a musical instrument, a simple flute, dates back as far as 67,000 years. Some consensus dates early flutes to about 37,000 years ago. However, most historians believe that determining a specific time of musical instrument invention is impossible, as many early musical instruments were made from animal skins, bone, wood and other non-durable materials.
Musical instruments developed independently in many populated regions of the world. However, contact among civilizations caused rapid spread and adaptation of most instruments in places far from their origin. By the Middle Ages, instruments from Mesopotamia were in maritime Southeast Asia, and Europeans played instruments originating from North Africa. Development in the Americas occurred at a slower pace, but cultures of North, Central, and South America shared musical instruments.
