About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

Grace Weber - Do4Me. An exclusive performance for Vevo.

If you need proof that the past informs the present, check the way Grace Weber’s childhood work in gospel choirs nourished her fully blossomed career. The 35-year-old Wisconsin native has one of those voices that uses a from-the-heart vibe to invite listeners deeper and deeper into a song. Take last year’s “Lonely,” for example. From floating in a cooing upper register, to rendering a couple gut-shaking ruminations towards the bottom, Weber wrings lots of emotion from a sweet little tune. It’s easy to hear how the R&B atmosphere absorbed early on with Milwaukee’s Central City Youth Choir helps her deliver a sweet punch now. Positive signs about possible paths have always come her way. At 16, she participated in ‘Showtime At The Apollo,’ and during her college years, she got even more serious about music studies. The payoff arrived with her work on Chance the Rapper’s celebrated ‘Coloring Book’ in 2016; she picked up a GRAMMY for her participation on that jewel. The soul grooves she’s so skilled at defined 2021’s ‘A Beautiful Space’ debut; last September she impressed fans with its follow-up, ‘Paperflower,’ and its lead video, “Do4Me.” She recently hit our studio to put a live spin on that one, and the album’s lead track, “Fallin’.” Catch the gospel aura on both performances.

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk celebrates the undeniable legacy of BET. Like the network that put Black artistry first, these sets reflect the essence of Black music.

Bobby Carter | June 18, 2026
As 8Ball & MJG entered the NPR building and made their way to the Desk, I couldn't help but be captivated by their evolution into rap music elder statesmen. No scandal, no breakups — just two emcees in good health ready to get busy. These Memphis legends, steeped in the blues, capture the essence of Southern hip-hop.

Unlike many of their '90s peers who leaned heavily on beat machines and samplers, 8Ball & MJG incorporate live instrumentation into their music. That translates here, as the band kicks off the set with a few instrumental bars from "Pimps" before 8Ball goes straight into the title track off the 1993 debut album Comin' Out Hard. Then they fire off three songs from 2004's Living Legends and close with "Space Age Pimpin'."

It's uncommon for our favorite groups to maintain their unity; when they do, the bonds often fade, leading to a strictly business-oriented relationship. And, yet, 8Ball & MJG exemplify familial camaraderie, which radiates throughout their Tiny Desk concert.

Along with the release of her seventh studio album, 'Eternal Sunshine,' the singer dropped the music video for her second single, 'We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love).' LYRICS:

Hoy vas a volver
Pero yo estoy bailando y no pensándote
Y tú con otro caption dedicándome
Pa' mí eso lo dejé en el ayer
Hoy vas a volver
Hoy vas a volver
Pero yo estoy bailando y no pensándote
Y tú con otro caption dedicándome
Pa' mí eso lo dejé en el ayer
Hoy vas a volver
Pero yo estoy bailando y no pensándote
Y tú con otro caption dedicándome
Pa' mí eso lo dejé (lo dejé) en el ayer (en el ayer, yeh)
Turn it up
Yeah, you know I got that fire, burn it up
Ese fuego que tuvimo' se apagó
Lo que me duele por un día en un año a ti te va a doler peor
Burn it up
Tú me soltaste (ah), me dejaste ir (ah)
No vuelvas, que ya me cansé de verte venir
Hoy vas a volver
Pero yo estoy bailando y no pensándote
Y tú con otro caption dedicándome
Pa' mí eso lo dejé en el ayer
Hoy vas a volver
Pero yo estoy bailando y no pensándote
Y tú con otro caption dedicándome
Pa' mí eso lo dejé en el ayer

The Arsenio Hall Show (1989)

Shabba Ranks - Mr Loverman on Arsenio Hall Show

Paul McCartney performs Band on the Run (feat. Dave Grohl) at Glastonbury 2022. Go to BBC iPlayer now to watch more.

Maia Stern | March 11, 2024
What better way to spend March 11 than with 311 bringing love and nostalgia to the Tiny Desk. The members of 311, who have been a band together for over 30 years, strolled into NPR HQ and barely needed much rehearsal time before playing four of their most beloved tracks. The band has been performing these songs for decades, and you can tell it all just comes naturally. "This kind of reminds me of being in my dad's basement, being back next to the pool table, but it smells better here," said lead singer Nick Hexum, who felt right at home and back to his roots at our office space.

311's self-titled album came out in 1995 when I was entering my peak angst stage. The songs on that album were the perfect soundtrack to all the pre-teen feelings I wasn't able to fully express myself. I also heavily related to what remains to be my favorite lyric of all time from the band's 1997 album Transistor: "I do, I don't, whatever."

311's Tiny Desk set started off with the song that lyric comes from, personal favorite "Beautiful Disaster." The band continued with classic "All Mixed Up" before chilling out a bit with "Amber." Then, as Hexum said before the band's final track, "Down," it was "back to the rock." Listen out for SA's changed lyric honoring my and Tiny Desk's shared hometown: "Fall in love with your teachers, on the wax we are self made / Check the technique, 311 in D.C."

Lyrics below:
I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste
A flannel for my face
Pajamas, a hairbrush
New shoes and a case
I said to my reflection
"Let's get out of this place"
Passed the church and the steeple
The laundry on the hill
Billboards and the buildings
Memories of it still
Keep calling and calling
But forget it all, I know I will
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
I'm at the car park, the airport
The baggage carousel
(The people keep on grindin')
Ain't wishing I was well
I said it's no occasion
(It's no story I could tell)
At my bedside empty pocket
A foot without a sock
Your body gets much closer
I fumble for the clock
Alarmed by the seduction
I wish that it would stop
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
I bought a novel, some perfume
A fortune all for you
But it's not my conscience
That hates to be untrue
I asked of my reflection
Tell me what is there to do?
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered

Shortly after Bob Marley's passing, the ROCKPALAST showcased reggae at Essen's Grugahalle for the first time, challenging the belief that reggae was fading. BLACK UHURU, Jamaica's most innovative group apart from dancehall, was chosen. In 1974, Duckie Simpson, Don Carlos, and Garth Dennis founded "Black Freedom," with "Uhuru" meaning "freedom" in Swahili. However, before their first album, Dennis left for the WAILING SOULS, and Don Carlos pursued a solo career. Simpson recruited Errol Nelson and Michael Rose. Rose introduced them to Prince Jammy, who agreed to produce an album. In 1977, "Love Crisis" debuted, and Puma Jones replaced Nelson. After two albums, Jammy remixed and re-released their work as "Black Sounds Of Freedom" on Greensleeves. BLACK UHURU had evolved into a quintet with SLY & ROBBIE, departing from reggae's traditional one-drop beat. Their live lineup included guitarist Daryl Thompson and keyboardist Franklyn "Bubbler" Waul. Sly's drumming, Robbie's bass, Thompson's guitar, and Waul's offbeat piano created a unique sound. After their ROCKPALAST performance, BLACK UHURU achieved global success with three more albums. Michael Rose left due to alleged jealousy from Duckie Simpson and was replaced by Junior Reid. They scored UK Top 10 hits and released "Brutal" and "Positive." Puma Jones passed away in 1990, and SLY & ROBBIE stepped back. Duckie Simpson, holding the BLACK UHURU name rights, reunited with Don Carlos and Garth Dennis, releasing albums but not achieving their '80s success. Dub mixes were released during their peak, but none matched the quality and energy of their 1981 ROCKPALAST performance.

The Captain Of Her Heart

It was way past midnight
and she still couldn't fall asleep.
This night the dream was leaving,
she'd tried so hard to keep
and with the new day's dawning
she felt it drift away,
not only for a cruise
not only for a day.

Too long ago, too long apart,
she couldn't wait another day for
the captain of her heart

As the day came up she made a start,
she stopped waiting another day for
the captain of her heart

Lyrics:

I I I I
I told you, not to wear that dress to the club tryna dance up on me
I I I
I told you, not to push that thing on me
If you know I want it
I I

That's gon' get you in trouble
(Oooh, oooh)
It's gon' get you in trouble
(Oooh, oooh)
That's gon' get you in trouble
(Oooh, oooh)
It's gon' get you in trouble
(Oooh, oooh)
