If someone throws a new song at you, how quickly can you learn it?

If you want to be a recording or touring session drummer – especially if you don’t have a superhuman memory – being able to read and chart songs could be the difference between getting the gig or being told ‘no thanks’.

In this video, Gregg Bissonette shows us the power of sight reading and transcribing with a song that was chosen for him to learn off the cuff. He’s able to identify sections and get the gist of the track before adding detailed notes.

First, Gregg listens to the song and roughly transcribes a form chart of the structure and identifies key accents and sections (you can write it on paper instead of your floor tom). He listens again and maps out the number and length of the bars. Then Gregg was given the actual chart as a reference, where he added phrase markings.

As a session drummer, it’s important to be able to read and transcribe music so you can learn songs quickly and accurately. In fact, that’s how Gregg landed a gig with David Lee Roth. He has the skills to feel phrase length and repetitions, identify figures and solos, articulate longs and shorts, and identify roadmap signs (like a dal segno or coda). You can develop these skills too!

Arthur Lee Conley (January 4, 1946 – November 17, 2003) was a U.S. soul singer, best known for the 1967 hit "Sweet Soul Music".

Conley was born in McIntosh County, Georgia, U.S., and grew up in Atlanta. He first recorded in 1959 as the lead singer of Arthur & the Corvets. With this group, he released three singles in 1963 and 1964—"Poor Girl", "I Believe", and "Flossie Mae"—on the Atlanta-based record label, NRC Records.

When Turkish President Ataturk came to power in the 1920s, he saw the West as an example of what he wished his newly founded state of Turkey to be.

In a bid to achieve this, Turkish radio banned the broadcast of classic Ottoman music in favour of Western-style music.

The story of Taraf de Caliu is a metamorphosis in itself, as after more than three decades of relentlessly touring all over the world, the founding members of Taraf de Haidouks came back home to Romania and started this new project.

They show their skills plentifully in this fabulous performance of traditional Romanian music, a joyful and lively music showed performed for the first time on a TEDx stage. Since 1991, their music conquered Western Europe in tours and performances on almost all continents. Their talent and roots have evolved with culturally diverse influences from Tokyo, Singapore, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Istanbul or London. If we are to name just a few of their fans and collaborators, we’d go for Yehudi Menuhin, Kronos Quartet (alongside which they produced), Johnny Depp (with whom they starred in “The Man Who Cried”) and Yohji Yamamoto.

After more than three decades of relentlessly touring all over the world, the founding members of Taraf de Haidouks came back and started a new project: Taraf de Caliu – comprising of: “Gheorghe “Caliu” Anghel – violin, Ionică Tănase – cimbalom, Marius „Marin” Manole – accordion / voice, Sile Neacșu- bass, Filip Simeonov – Clarinet, Viorica Rudăreasa – voice, Ionuț Gulună – voice.

Under the name of Taraf de Haidouks, the group was awarded in 2002 with BBC World Music prize for Best Group in Europe & Middle East. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

My homage to ancient Rome. Aetas Romana is Latin and means "the age of Rome".
With this song I tried to create something that takes me back to the time in which Rome was at its peak and stretched from Britannia to Syria over snow-covered plains to scorching deserts. The song itself is not like Illyricum, which was meant to be as traditional as possible. In this song I chose a composing style closer to movie scores, which gives much more room for dramatics and feelings of awe and mystery. The first 4min are actually a different scale than most of the later parts, it starts with an Arabian scale and then transitions into Aeolian minor which is a classic European scale. So in a sense it can be seen as if you'd travel from the East into the centre of the Roman Empire as the song progresses.
