Chick Corea: Vigilette | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA Hotney 2 意见 • 4 年前

By NATE CHINEN

Pianist Chick Corea has lived many lives as a musician, from post-bop wunderkind to free-jazz maverick to fusion explorer to chamber-jazz eminence. That imprecise tally leaves out a lot in an expansive career — but, more to the point, it creates the false impression that Corea compartmentalizes his musical output, when the truth suggests something far more holistic.

Jazz Night in America caught up with Corea during a recent gig at Scullers in Boston — just across the river from Chelsea, Mass., where he was born and raised. He was on tour with a new trio he calls Vigilette, with Carlitos Del Puerto on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. The set list combined songbook standards like "On Green Dolphin Street" with originals like "Rhumba Flamenco," each number delivered with Corea's brand of articulate flair.

A few days after the performance, Corea sat down with Christian McBride — our host, and his longtime musical collaborator — for a collegial and far-ranging conversation. They discuss the first time Corea saw Miles Davis, an experience that changed his life, and one he recalls with absolute detail. Corea also reflects on the role of an artist: "We have a mission to go out there and be an antidote to war, and all of the dark side of what happens on Planet Earth," he says. "We're the ones that go in and remind people about their creativity."

This performance was recorded live by Antonio Oliart at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston, MA, on Sept. 19, 2018.

JADAKISS On Leading The Culture, Sport & Hip Hop Being Synonymous, AI, & More | I AM ATHLETE Hotney 2 意见 • 4 年前

Jadakiss is the definition of Culture. JadaKiss joins Brandon Marshall, Adam "Pacman" Jones, Omar Kelly, and Ashley Nicole Moss in Episode 5 of I Am Athlete Podcast Season 4. "Top 5 Dead or Alive" reminisces on his legendary commercial with Allen Iverson back in 2001, what his place in culture and hip hop is, how Sports and hip hop are synonymous, and his advice to young artists entering the game.

The crew then remembers the rappers who have had their life taken like Nipsey Hussle, Take Off, Pop Smoke, and how its sickening but can be preventable with therapy and talks with OGs. Later, the crew remembers a moment from Season 3 ranking the Top 5 pettiest people with 50 cent at the top of that list.

THAT'S SO PRINCE MEGAMIX (1978-1994) Hotney 2 意见 • 4 年前

Welcome 2 the Dawn...please don't feed the doves.

At long last, here's my epic tribute to the late, undeniably great Prince Rogers Nelson! I've wanted to devote an entire mix to him for ages, and I'm happy to have finally edited together something I hope is worthy of one of my all-time favourite artists. Over the next 3.5 hours, you'll be hearing a VERY generous sampling of his best recordings, from his debut single (i.e. 1978's "Soft And Wet") to his final worldwide chart-topper (i.e. 1994's "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World") and countless points in between, sampling every album he released during that period. Here, you'll find iconic hits, beloved b-sides and album tracks, along with the odd remix. To be honest, I ended up leaving out A LOT of first-rate material; otherwise, this mix would be twice as long!

Hopefully, the casual Prince fans amongst you will develop a deeper appreciation for his genius, while die-hard fans will enjoy hearing this carefully curated tribute.

And if you REALLY enjoy these mixes, consider showing your appreciation using my Paypal account. They take A LOT of time and effort to assemble, so any small token would be GREATLY appreciated - thanks in advance!
