‘A toast to the pleasures of life!’ – so sings Violetta, her new admirer Alfredo and her party guests in the opening scene of Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata. But beneath the surface glamour of Violetta’s Parisian life run darker undercurrents: her doomed love for Alfredo and the tensions the lovers encounter when they break society’s conventions. La traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s play La Dame aux camélias, is one of Verdi’s most popular operas, combining drama, profound emotion and wonderful melodies.

Richard Eyre’s classic production conveys the indulgent social whirl of 19th-century Paris. It provides a vivid setting for Verdi’s tuneful score, which includes such favourites as Violetta’s introspective ‘Ah fors’è lui’ and ecstatic ‘Sempre libera’; the duet ‘Pura siccome un angelo’ as Giorgio Germont begs Violetta to leave Alfredo; and ‘Parigi, o cara’, in which the lovers poignantly imagine a life that will never be theirs. The role of Violetta (the ‘fallen woman’ of the title) is one of Verdi’s most complex and enduring characters.

The Aspen Ideas Festival campus spans 40 acres and is filled with art installations, event venues, grassy fields and picturesque gardens. Sounds perfect, right? But when we tried to find a place to record Jonathan Scales’ steelpans, the landscape actually presented a challenge.

Scales’ instruments were once authentic oil barrels that were pounded, finished and tuned just for the Fourchestra. Despite the fact that it originated in tropical Trinidad and Tobago, the steelpan is highly sensitive to the sun’s heat, which impacts the metal so drastically that if left in the sun even for a short period of time, it can warp out of tune. Our team spent a lot of time trying to find a shady spot to capture this Field Recording and we finally found a nook protected by a strand of Aspen trees.

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has been performing for 17 years, and in the process he’s established the steelpans as a signature jazz instrument. This performance features bassist Cody Wright, who used to play with the group and made a special appearance for this performance. Their energetic, creative four-song set revels in the uncategorizable area between jazzy funk and bluegrass.

Neo-Traditional Country music trio, The Castellows, are bringing a literal meaning to the phrase, “family tradition.” The band comprised of sisters Ellie (lead guitar), Powell (banjo) and Lily (vocals), hail from small rural Georgetown, Georgia, but now call Nashville home. The Castellows’ sound is traditional, yet modern. Authentic, yet harnessed. The common thread among the trio, other than their DNA, is their masterful three-part harmonies which blend together to create one singular, almost angelic, voice. The band began turning heads of music industry insiders in January 2023. When spring arrived, The Castellows had received interest from entities across the entire music industry, including those based in New York, Los Angeles, as well as Nashville.
