Eclectic Musician Frank Zappa would first appear on NBC’s variety sketch show Saturday Night Live in 1976 as the musical guest. Two years later he’d appear as the host and musical guest and it would result in him getting banned. Let’s take a look at what happened.
On October 21, 1978 Frank Zappa was tapped to host saturday night live and appear as the musical guest. It was a rare occurrence back in the day for the show to have the same host and musical guest. It feels more common nowadays. Unfortunately for the show and Zappa it didn’t go well.. Looking uncomfortable during the beginning of the show Zappa would start things off by reminding the audience that he was reading off of cue cards.
Each episode of SNL involves a week of brainstorming ideas for sketches, writing the sketches and then rehearsing. It was during the run up to his hosting date that Zappa didn’t appear to get along with the cast of the show. So much so, that some of the cast members refused to even appear onstage with the musician during the final segment of the show known as the ‘goodnight segment’. Perhaps part of the reason Zappa didn’t gel with the cast was because it was the 70’s and drug use was pretty rampant amongst the SNL staff, something Zappa disapproved of.
After a poorly received dress rehearsal Zappa adopted an attitude of indifference, and it was obvious to those watching at home.
A year after his appearance Zappa would be interviewed by Stereo Review and look back at his appearance hosting SNL Saying “It’s a very difficult thing to do; they never make it easy on anyone who hosts the show. All the direction and attention goes to the sketches. They’re not called skits–they become ‘incensed’ if you call them skits–and it’s all designed to accommodate the people who are regulars on the show, so anybody who goes on there to hosts is at a severe disadvantage. Because they never tell you what camera is on, and you’re not supposed to memorize your script because they’re rewriting right up to show time. And so you’re looking at the cue cards, and unless you’re used to acting live on TV, you haven’t got a prayer; you’ll be looking at the wrong camera. It was really hard.” Adding They [SNL] had written dialogue for me to say that I wouldn’t normally say; they wouldn’t let me write any of my own stuff.”
In 1990 comedian and cast member Dana Carvey would end up immitating Frank Zappa on the show during an episode that comedian andrew dice clay hosted.

I’ve covered a lot of artists whose videos MTV banned including Soundgarden, Neil Young, and Danzig. In pretty much all of these instances their videos either criticized the network, broke their policies or had imagery that was too provocative, but it’s rare that video has no violence, no nudity or criticizes the network and still gets banned. Well that’s what happened to TOOL. Let’s discuss in today’s video.
Formed in Los Angeles in the early 90’s by frontman Maynard James Kennan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and original bassist Paul D’Amour Tool would shock everyone with the one two punch of their debut EP 1992’s Opiate and 1993’s Undertow. For the members of the Tool it was important first and foremost to have creative control with guitarist Adam Jones telling Revolver Magazine “When we got signed [by Zoo Records in 1992], the most important thing for us was to have creative control,”
And that creative control extended not just to their music, but to their music videos. In fact before starting the band Tool both Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Adam Jones worked on film productions doing visual effects for several big hollywood films including Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park. In the same interview with Revolver Jones would add “We went, ‘OK, if we take less money can we have control of the music?’ And the label went, ‘Yeah, no problem!’ And we said, ‘If we take even less money can we have final say over the videos.’ And they went, ‘Sure.’”
Of course in theory all this is great, but Tool would soon butt heads with their record label. The second single from Undertow Sober would feature a stop motion video as did the video for their third single Prison Sex. For record labels you don’t just sell the music, but you sell the image of the band and Jones would tell Metal Hammer. “There was a lot of banging heads with the record company, because they still wanted to do things in the traditional way,. “They’d go, ‘Well, if you’re not gonna be in your video, we’re not gonna pay for it.’ And we’d say, ‘What do you mean? We’re supposed to have creative control.’ It was typical, slimy shit, but in the end they gave in.”
Even during the filming of the video the band ran into some serious issues. As filming began with Sober director Fred Stuhr in January of 1994 in Los Angeles the city would be rocked by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that killed dozens and injured nearly 10,000 people. Jones would tell Loudersound
“We were still there at three in the morning when the ’94 earthquake hit Los Angeles,” “We were on the second floor of this old brick building that used to be owned by [American filmmaker] Cecil B. DeMille, and it wasn’t too sturdy. The rooms started shaking, and before I even know what was going on, Fred ran over to stand in the doorway, because that’s what you’re supposed to do in an earthquake. But the other five of us who were there just ran out and ploughed him over and left him lying on the ground. It was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, and the best thing. When I looked out I could see downtown Hollywood, and all the transformers were blowing. They were popping, so there were these lightning strikes everywhere and it looked like the city was being bombed. It was just so beautiful.”

The subject matter of Prison sex dealt with childhood trauma , something the video depicted metaphorically. The message of the song is that those who suffere trauma early on in their life are capable of inflicting the same trauma as they get older. It’s been speculated the song was written about Maynard James Keenan’s step father, whom the frontman has repeatedly expressed his distaste for.
The message of the song wasn’t lost on both muchmusic in canada and mtv banned the video after a few plays. Despite this move the video still snagged a nomination for best visual effects. The reason for banning the video was that MTV complained the video was too unsettling. I’ve covered a lot of Alice in CHains videos on my channel including their glam days, making of facelift, jar of flies, sap and rooster. Links to those videos are down below. But today let’s take a look at a frontman Layne Staley’s final days with the band in the studio.
Alice in CHains would establish themselves as the first band out of seattles so called grunge movement to have a gold record with facelift. They would be release several big records including 1992’s Dirt, 1994’s EP Jar of Flies and 1995’s Self titled record that would prove to be their final studio album of original recordings. Addiction and in-fighting led to the band stop touring in any major capacity by 1993. Frontman Layne Staley’s addiction to heroin would be the group’s achiles heal and it wasn’t something the singer hid. A lot of their sop****re release 1992’s Dirt captured Layne’s struggle. The band’s last major appearance on the

road would be 1996, a year that saw the band briefly open for kiss that summer and make a few live tv appearances in addition to cutting an unplugged album. It was obvious from layen;’s changing physical appearance by 1996 he was still struggling with addiction. Following that summer alice in chains camp would lie dormant. Layne was hit with devastating news in October of that year when he learned his ex-fiance Demri Parrot had died. It was said by those close to him that he never fully recovered from her death.
By november of 1997 Layne would record guest vocals on the song the things you do for his friend jesse holt. Layne had previously recorded vocals on the track in 1988. In the book alice in chains the untold story, jason buttino who has the recordings would be quoted in the book as saying layne’s voice by this point in time was so quiet and soft his vocal track had to be boosted. Buttino also attributed the change in his voice not just due to his deteriorating health but the fact that the song was recorded a year after Demri’s death, something that obviously was still weighing heavily on him. It was during this time There’d be the odd news story about some running into Layne a lot of which is captured in the books everybody loves our town and grunge is dead. Even MTV reported in August 1997 there were rumors circulating online and on radio stations that Layne had lost several fingers to gangrene. The rumors likely stemmed from a 1996 profile that rolling stone did on the band that highlighted his personal problems. A rep for the band would issue a statement to mtv that read "I visited Layne the other day, and he's fine... and he's got all his fingers."
In October of 1997 the band’s manager Susan would appear at the north by northwest music and media conference and the seattle times would report at the time and i quote “she also hinted with a sigh that a lice is about to self destruct.” It was during this time Silver closed her management business.
A few months after the report came out in late 1997 reports would surface that guitarist Jerry Cantrell was now turning his attention to putting out a solo record. It’s important to note that boggy depot consisted of ¾ of alice in chains minus layne staley. ’ve had a lot of people requesting this band over the past year or two and it’s finally time to tackle this subject. Before we start make sure you guys go fill out our request form in the description box below of what stories and topics you’d like to see us cover in the future on our channel. Stabbing Westward would emerge on people’s radars during the mid 90’s and be frequently compared to industrial pioneers nine Inch nails. I mean, they shared a similar sound even shared drummers, which may have been instrumental in getting the band signed and today we’re going to explore whatever happened to the band.

While Stabbing Westward wouldn’t rise to prominence in the middle part of the 90’s they formed nearly a decade prior in the 80’s. The band would be started by two musicians bassist and vocalist Christopher Hall and Walter Flakus (keyboardist, programmer, backup singer) in the city of Macomb, Illinois. Most sources said the band’s early days dated back to 1985, but one fan site that’s since archived claims the band’s origins dated back to 1981. According to the fan site the pair met at a summer music camp. Four years later they would both attend Western Illinois University pursuing degrees in music, while working at the local college radio station.. At this time forming a rock band wasn’t on their minds, at least not for Hall who would tell Cryptic Rock From the time I was five, I played the trumpet and I went to college studying Classical music. I was convinced I was going to be a trumpet player in the Chicago Symphony and be a university teacher; that was my goal.The Rock band thing was sort of a side passion that kind of took over. Hall would tell songfacts where the band’s musical inspiration came from saying As kids, Walter and I were crazy about Ministry and Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk and bands like that. Anything Al Jourgensen did we just thought was the greatest thing on earth. That was always just what we wanted to do.

The pair would play in a variety of bands before they decided they wanted to form their own project.The pair soon started recording music similar to the Cure and they bought a four track recorder, a drum machine and learned how to sequence a midi keyboard. Christopher Hall would tell Songfacts We were both in other bands – together and apart – that were mostly cover bands. One band was like a new wave cover band. I was in another band that did a lot of Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen type stuff. But Walter and I always secretly wrote industrial music in our bedroom. We would put together every keyboard and drum machine we had and bounce tracks on a four-track. That was our passion.

According to future drummer Andy Kubiszewski (Coup-bichess-kee) who told be in the loop chicago the band’s name came from and i quote “essentially when Chris and Walter were putting the band together, they had a gig and there was a deadline for a name for the band, so they pulled out a bunch of album covers and they pulled out a record cover and it had an excerpt from, I believe it was an Eisenhower speech, where he was talking about communism coming to the west and he used the phrase “stabbing westward,” and they went oh well, “Stabbing Westward”, that will work.”

In reality the phrase stabbing westward was not from eisenhower, but an unknown announcer from a 1947 newsreel. The newsreel would be included in the 1982 documentary the atomic cafe.

The pairs post secondary institution of Western Illinois University served as an inspiration for the pair with Hall stating to R&R Reported “Since we went to Western Illinois University, Stabbing Westward had a certain ‘kill everybody in the school’ vibe to it! The school’s way out in farm country and the country is really close minded. I was walking around like Robert Smith with real big hair, big baggy black clothes, black fingernail polish and eye makeup. They just didn’t get it. We hated the town.”

Despite being panned by critics the 1994 film Ace Ventura Pet Detective was instrumental in launching comedian Jim Carrey’s movie career. Apart from helping Jim Carrey’s career the film was also important in increasing the popularity of Death Metal legands Cannibal Corpse who also appeared in the film at the request of the comedian. Today lets talk about how the band ended up in the film, what happened afterwards and is jim carrey a metal head?

The film Ace Ventura Pet Detective saw Jim Carrey’s character trying to find out who stole the football team the Miami Dolphin’s mascot. In addition to Carrey the film would star real life Miami Dolphin’s quarterback Dan Marino and Friends actress Courtney Cox. The film would be director Tom Shaydac’s directorial debut and he was given a pretty small budget of under $20M. There were a lot of gambles during the filming. Actor jim carrey was mostly known from standup and his appearance on the show in living colour. How would he translate to the big screen, especially considering he improvised a lot of the scenes. It was a sentiment that carry shared with the LA Times in 1994 while promoting the film revealing

“"I knew this movie was going to either be something that people really went for, or it was going to ruin me completely,"”

Carrey would admit to Arsenio Hall in an interview a few years before the film came out that he found himself fascinated by metal as you can see here.

According to Barney Greenway of napalm death carrey reportedly asked for napalm death to be in the film, but it wasn’t clear what happened to the request so cannibal corpse was next in line. By 1994 Cannibal Corpse was still up and coming at the time, even though they had already recorded 3 albums and they wouldn’t have an album on the US charts until 1996’s Vile.

The band has always been controversial amongst politicians and even entire countries. Former U.S. Senators Bob Dole and Joe Lieberman both called them out in his campaign speech. Dole claimed the band and i quote “undermines the national character of the United States” “mindless violence and loveless sex,”Dole’s aide later confirmed that he’s actually never listened to any of their music.

CC wasn’t allowed to play any songs off their first 3 albums [1990’s Eaten Back to Life, 1991 Butchered at Birth and 1992’s Tomb of the Mutilated] in Germany until 2006. Their albums were banned from sale in Australia until that same year and according to vice the band was kicked out of russia several times for inciting religious division

The band has also faced heat from the russian government and had numerous shows canceled within the countries bordersfor and i quote “inciting religious division.” [source: vice]

Getting back to the movie and the band. Carrey had made a special request for the film to include the band and while the band was honored to get the offer they didn’t want to be made fun of or put in a comedic light. Cannibal Corpse drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz telling Vice in 2015 “We got a call from our record label, Metal Blade, saying that they’d got a call from Jim Carrey’s people saying that he wanted us to be in this movie he was making," "Of course, that’s not a call you’re expecting to get. It just didn’t compute, you know? But it was a phone call, simple as that." The drummer would admit that he was a fan of carrey from his in living colour days going on to say
"We’re a brutal death metal band, and we’re serious about what we do. This seemed like it would be a cool opportunity, but we didn’t want to be made to look like fools or to be laughed at," t "But they assured us that we were going to be portrayed as Cannibal Corpse - they weren’t gonna make fun of us."

Within a span of 23F years U2’s music was stolen not one, not twice, not three times, but four times ahead of their album’s coming out. In today’s video we’re going to explore what happened in all four instances.

Story 1

This first story starts in 1981. U2 was in Oregon playing a show when a briefcase was stolen from the band. The brief case contained lyrics that were going to be on their forthcoming album at the time October. As a result of the stolen briefcase Bono had to rewire the lyrics to the album in the studio, something the band members claimed was a terrible recording experience. A few years later when the band returned to Portland Bono appealed to the audience to return the briefcase. He made a similar request in 2001 when the band played Portland again.

Finally, 23 years after it went missing the briefcase was returned in 2004 by a 44 year old woman named Cindy Harris, 44 who claimed she found it in the attic of a rented house in 1981. Harris would claim she had no idea that it was stolen in 1981 and when she finally realized it was improperly taken, she wasn’t sure how to contact the band’s management.

Story 2

In the spring of 1991 ahead of U2 releasing their seven thstudio album Achtung baby the band learned that theirr rehearsal tapes were stolen. The band was in berlin, germany during the recording of the album. While it’s not exactly clear how teh rehearsal tapes ended up in the hands of bootleggers there’s been two theories put forward. One was that perhaps they were stolen from the band members hotel rooms, while another is that they were stolen from the band members cars in Dublin. The LA Times would report that hotelmaids found the tapes in the band members hotel trash can in berlin, but a spokesperson for the band told the paper “It’s impossible to fathom the band leaving these tapes in the hotel trash. They would always be under lock and key.” The bootleg tapes originated from sessions done the previous year in Berlin at Hansa (hanza) studios.

Either way bootleggers around the world started selling the almost 3.5 hours of rehearsal tapes. There would be multiple versions of the rehearsal tapes put out .When U2 learned about this and the mainstream press picked it up, Bono referred to the recordings as and i quote “gobbleygook” and said that he didn’t understand why anybody would be interested in it.

The LA Times would publish a piece in May of 1991 that read “Call it the ultimate underground album. Rock radio isn’t playing it. Record stores won’t sell it. The band’s record company hasn’t even heard of it.” The LA Times would report that one bootleg that was circulating at the time was titled “The New U2: Rehearsals and Full Versions,” with the album being sold with two discs to a jacket promising 30 new tracks including “She’s Gonna Blow Your House Down,” “Sweet Baby Jane,” “I Feel Free,” “Don’t Say Goodbye” and “Don’t Let the Dues Get You Down.”

The Times would interview a fellow named Pete Howard who was the publisher of the international CD exchange newsletter who said “What makes this almost unprecedented is that these are tapes of songs that aren’t even finished yet,” . He would claim he received the bootleg from an anonymous subscriber going on to say “Some of the songs sound close to being final versions, but others are still instrumentals without vocal tracks. You can even hear (lead singer) Bono signaling the band to go into a bridge or chorus.”

The band’s label island records would take out full page ads in the british press threatening lawsuits against any music shops who were caught selling the stolen tapes. The police in London and Germany would catch a few stores selling the bootlegs, resulting in fines according to the Times. The Times would interview the general manager for Moby Disc record store chain in LA who told the outlet that the retail bootleg market in LA isn’t what it used to be and with all the media attention on the U2 bootleg, stores would have to be out of their mind to try and sell it. Years later Cohen revealed why he was no longer part of the film and why things fell apart. Cohen would even reveal that the original script seemed like a terrible idea. One member of Queen wouldn’t mince words about his disdain for the actor. That’s what were going to explore in today’s video.

In September of 2010 guitarist Brian May would let it slip that Queen was working on a biopic that actor Sacha Baron Cohen had been pushing for. May would tell the Hardtalk Show “We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time," It was initially reported that shooting would begin in 2011

More than a year later by April of 2011 shooting hadn’t begun yet. Brian May gave an update telling the Daily Record that they were still in discussions with Sacha baron cohen and that the actor told him personally he was born to play freddie. However, May would reveal that the rest of the Queen organization were reluctant to do a film fearing it could hurt the band’s legacy stating : "It is a project which is taking up a lot of time even though it is in the preparatory stages. It is a bit early to say how we will feel about it.
"Obviously, we go into it with a great amount of enthusiasm but also a certain amount of caution because Freddie's legacy is very precious and we have a great responsibility not to mess it up. It is more about Freddie than it is about us and that is deliberately so.
"We have resisted making this film for a long time and it is only now we feel we have the right people that we have given it the OK.
"Sacha does seem perfect. If it hadn't been for Sacha pushing and pushing, we wouldn't be at this point. We didn't choose him. He chose us."He is passionate about playing Freddie. For years, he's been saying he is going to do it."
Then a few years would go by and in July of 2013 it came out that Baron Cohen and Queen had parted ways on the project. It was reported at the time that creative differences led to the split with Baron Cohen wanting the biopic to be nitty gritty while Queen wanted the movie to be more restrained and sanitized. Brian May would claim that the parties parted ways on good terms, but in 2014 both Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor gave an update on the film. May would tell Classic Rock magazine "[I]n the end we felt that his presence in the movie would be very distracting," referring to the comedians over the antics with characters like borat and bruno going on to say "[W]e thought there has to be no distraction in the Freddie movie. You have to really suspend that disbelief – the man who plays Freddie, you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn’t that could really happen with Sacha." May would say he was a fan of Baron, Cohen, but Roger Taylor was less diplomatic saying We didn’t want it to be a joke. We want people to be moved. 2 years later the actor appeared on the howard stern show in 2016 and gave his version of events and made a surprising revelation of the original script he was involved with and why he walked away.

in 2018 while promoting the film to the associated press Roger Taylor would slam cohen saying “It was never really on [with Cohen]. I don’t think he took it seriously enough — he didn’t take Freddie seriously enough. I think it’s [been] a long road, but we’re at the end of it now.”
Taylor echoed those feelings again this year with Classic Rock Magazine where he told the publication what have would happened if Baron Cohen played freddie saying “I think he would have been utter shit,” “Sacha is pushy, if nothing else. He’s also six inches too tall. But I watched his last five films and came to the conclusion he’s not a very good actor… I thought he was an utterly brilliant subversive comedian, that’s what he’s great at. Anyway, I think

Best known for their hit song How Bizarre, OMC’s hit track was inescapable in the mid 90’s.. It would be a number one hit in both Canada and the US, it would reach the top 10 in over a dozen countries and resulted in their lone album selling millions of copies worldwide. The group’s sole album appropriately titled how bizarre would be new zealand’s biggest selling musical export. While How Bizarre was an upbeat song, OMC’s career was not. Drugs, gangs, lawsuits and health issues plagued the group and that’s what were going to explore in today’s video.

Pauly Fuemana would be the brainchild of OMC. He would be born in the late 60’s to polynesian parents in the impoverished auckland suburb of otara. Growing up in a difficult set of circumstances Fuemana was no stranger to the police frequently committing crimes, spending time in youth prison and getting involved with gangs, Amongst all the turmoil in Fuemana’s life he found joy in creating music with his brothers and sister. By the 80’s Fuemana was performing with an R&B group called House Party which included his brothers Phil and Tony and his sister Christine. He would start out as a dancer before teaching himself guitar and eventually singing background vocals for the group.The group would eventually change their name to Fuemana and released an album in 1993 on their own indie label. It would be the same year that Fuemana founded a new group called OMC which stood for the Otara Millionaire’s Club, which featured his brother Paul. Little did they know that in just a few short years that name would ring true, but it would come at a cost.

OMC’s early music resembled the rap that was popular in america at the time and while their early shows attracted some big crowds it was the wrong type of people. According to billboard magazine Otara’s Millionaire’s Club shows to see audience members from US exported gangs including the bloods and the crypts and it was at that point that Fuemana decided to quit the group, take the OMC name with him and start from scratch. His new music would draw on more of his south pacific roots. He would tell billboard in 1997 “we were doing all these gigs and gang members started showing up. In Auckland there is a very bad bloods and crips situation. I just decided to try and steer away from that and go in another direction where i could grow and get more into music that i wanted to make.” Helping Fuemana would be a producer named Alan Janseen who produced an underground New Zealand compilation record called “Proud” highlighting artists from South Auckland. OMC's contribution to the record would, We R the OMC.

Janseen and Fuemana would start writing songs together with the pair coming up with 8 songs in just 4 hours, one of which was How Bizarre. Originally titled Duff It Up, the name was quickly changed to How Bizarre. Author Simon Grigg who wrote a book about Fuemana would explain the origins of the song’s influences telling The Star newspaper “It has the Mariachi trumpets there which Pauly got from listening to Herb Alpert records when he was a kid,”.
“And the acoustic guitar is an Alan thing, from hearing folk rock on the radio, and Pauly’s vocal is almost a hip hop consciousness-style. So it was all these elements mixed together.
“And Alan's wife kept on saying ‘how bizarre’ about things, and we thought ‘that's a good phrase.’ You’d say something to her, and she’d go ‘how bizarre’. So it came from her.”
The day following that marathon writing session, OMC was booked to play big day out festival in auckland where they debuted the song live for the first time. It was a disastrous gig, people walked out on fuemana, but despite their poor live reception Australia seemed to love Paul with Rolling Stone referring to Fuemana”the marvin ****e of the pacific.” By late 1995 OMC would issue their debut album titled How Bizarre on local indie label Huh. It became a massive seller in New Zeland moving about 35,000 units.

The album would be distributed worldwide by major label Mercury-Polygram Records A spokesperson from the label would tell billboard “people here felt strongly about the album and song, but international sales don’t always translate because
