Fridayy – Lost My Way | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2024

Earlier this year the Vevo team hosted Fridayy at the Brooklyn location of our ctrl series. To get there requires a quick drive up interstate 95 from the Philly dude’s home city, and we could tell he was really comfortable on the mic that day. Not just comfortable. Totally in his bag. This was right around the release of his self-titled debut, which is less of a conventional R&B tape and something more like a 40 minute seminar in spirituality, resilience, and community. Almost at 2 million views as of now, those ctrl takes of “Stand By Me” and “Done For Me” are an undeniable metric of the crooner’s gravity and growing cache in pop and R&B. DJ Khaled obviously saw the potential when he tapped the son of Haitian immigrants for the title track on ‘GOD DID.’ And check the way he brings a little gospel to Lil Baby’s “Forever.” That one got him a spot on SNL and another chance to woo audiences with his live skills. Fridayy - born Francis LeBlanc - is also a multi-instrumentalist. So it wasn’t a surprised that when we invited him to come to our studios, this time for Artists To Watch 2024, he had drums, bass, and guitar in tow. Backup singers too. “Lost My Way” tiptoes through a dembow riddim. “When It Comes To You” is an R&B love song that leaves ego at the door (spend some time with its nuptial video). We truly can’t wait to see where he goes from here.

"Smooth jazz is music that evolved from a blend of jazz fusion and easy listening pop music, featuring a polished pop feel with little to no jazz improvisation. The genre arose in the mid-1970s in the United States, but it was not named "smooth jazz" until the 1980s. Traditional jazz players and jazz purists did not embrace the popular style; Jazz Journal's "Sound Investment" column stated in November 1999 that it "would cover an extremely wide spectrum of jazz styles" while avoiding smooth jazz.

The earliest smooth jazz music appearing in the 1970s includes the 1975 album Touch by saxophonist John Klemmer, the song "Breezin'" as performed by guitarist George Benson in 1976, the 1977 instrumental composition "Feels So Good" by flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, and jazz fusion group Spyro Gyra's instrumental "Morning Dance", released in 1979. Smooth jazz grew in popularity in the 1980s as Anita Baker, Sade, Al Jarreau and Grover Washington released multiple hit songs. The smooth jazz genre began to decline at the end of the 1980s in a backlash exemplified by critical complaints about what many critics saw as the "bland" sound of top-selling saxophonist Kenny G, whose popularity peaked with his 1992 album Breathless." ~Wikipedia
