There was a time when the British Music Press had absolute power. Punk, C86, Madchester, Grunge, Britpop, and The New Rock Revolution were all invented and made famous within the pages of NME, Sounds and Melody Maker. But trends are fickle. Once the press got bored of a certain sound or scene, they quickly moved on to the next one, viciously mocking what they were promoting weeks before. Many bands’ careers ended prematurely.

Slowdive had approximately six months of next-big-thing write-ups and glowing praise before they were exiled. In came Grunge and Shoegaze was suddenly not cool. For the rest of their initial three album run, they were critically kicked, punched and spat on by journalists. They were the enemy of the NME, and deemed monstrous by Melody Maker. Despite creating some of the most beautiful euphoric music of the 1990s, they were the most hated indie band in Britain. This is New British Canon, and this is the Story of “When The Sun Hits.”

What happens when the come-up comes up quick? You hold on tight and try to get comfortable. A sudden splash of fame, due to rather irresistible tracks "40s N 9s," "Without You" and "Dead Ops," has put DD Osama in the spotlight these days, but all the hubbub seems to suit him just fine. "2023 is my year," he recently told an interviewer without a wisp of arrogance. Confidence is a must in the big leagues, and the Harlem-born rapper, who's giving NYC drill a shift in tenor and tone, doesn't seem phased by all the action, even though he's a mere 16 years old. A relative newbie, he's racked up a million Instagram followers and lotsa millions of video views, and still seems calm and composed when describing the particulars of getting mucho shine. Osama came up in the city's Sugar Hill neighborhood, a Polo G and Lil Durk fan who also heard plenty of Spanish music being played by his mom. Fan numbers flourished when the young MC eloquently mourned his brother Notti, who died from a subway stabbing last summer. "E4N" and "Long Live Notti" celebrate their relationship. He's said that the recent acclaim feels hollow without his brother to share it with. But indeed it continues. The dude who wants to collab with Lil Baby has signed with Alamo Records and modeled for Drake's OVO clothing line. His ctrl romp through "Upnow" and “Let’s Do It” shows first-timers just how speedy and agile his spitting can be.
