Barely into her twenties, Koffee has ushered modern reggae back into the pop spotlight. The self-described “sing-jay-guitarist” - born Mikayla Simpson in Spanish Town, Jamaica - gained global attention in 2019 when her ‘Rapture’ EP was nominated for a Grammy alongside names like Marley and Sly and Robbie. Fast forward: her debut album, ‘Gifted," has recently arrived. From the swaggy dembow of “Pull Up” to the trad reggae vibes of “Shine,” the record is likely to be on repeat all summer long. We connected with Koffee in an 18th-century London mansion for our LIFT series, which identifies artists ready to ascend into serious stardom. Watch all three of her performances.

October 23, 2020 | Bobby Carter -- The setlist for Spillage Village's Tiny Desk (home) concert reminds me of the bouts of pessimism and jolts of optimism I've had of late. Opening with the dreary, apocalyptic "End of Daze," leaping into titles like "Hapi" and "Jupiter," feels all too applicable in 2020.

The Atlanta collective consists of Dreamville records standouts J.I.D and EARTHGANG along with Jurdan Bryant, Hollywood JB, Benji and Tiny Desk alumnus Mereba. R&B star 6lack, also a member of the group, was unable to make it to the shoot due to travel restrictions. Spillage Village began working on its latest album, Spilligion, in direct response to the unpredictable chaos the world has faced since March. J.I.D told Rolling Stone that he originally rented a house to begin recording his third solo album with collaborations, but that the heavy topics of the pandemic and social justice led to music that was bigger than any one artist.

The underlying theme throughout Spilligion is spirituality, so when they floated the idea of filming in a church I knew that if they couldn't perform behind the desk, this was the perfect alternative.

A deft blend of African and Caribbean vibes that’s sure to get waistlines moving from Lagos to Kingston, the track combines Joeboy’s patois-inflected lyrics and soulful production from P.Priime for an all-out bashment party banger. The Nigerian singer has played with island influences before, spicing his 2021 smash hit “Sip (Alcohol)” with Jamaican patois, but “Likkle Riddim” takes a more explicit trip to the dancehall, with Joeboy narrating an intimate dancefloor encounter like a true gyalist.
