This year the festival has taken on a new approach with seven headliners split between three locations: A$AP Rocky, J. Cole, Tyler, the Creator, Dave, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and SZA.

Wireless Festival 2022 has already kicked off with last weekend (July 1 to July 3) seeing tons of exciting performances at London’s Crystal Palace Park. Festival go-ers enjoyed performances from the likes of A$AP Rocky, J.Cole, Doja Cat and Tyler The Creator.

Don’t worry if you missed out of the events at Crystal Palace Park. Wireless is continuing this weekend, with three-day events in London Finsbury Park and Outdoor at the Birmingham NEC across July 8 – July 11.

The Bay Area rapper Symba is a capable storyteller, but he is best known for his bars. "Can I rap for y'all?" he asks after performing "Can't Win For Nothing." "'Cause that wasn't really me rapping; that was me guiding y'all through a bad day. Let me spit some lyrics." Fair enough. He did tear through a L.A. Leakers freestyle, during a visit to Power 106 in 2020, turning many heads and even earning Dr. Dre's hard-won approval. But in his Tiny Desk concert, he demonstrates a keen ability to supplement his charged, freestyler's energy, balancing high-octane wordplay with crisp scene-setting. Donning a Reese Cooper varsity jacket, a white tee, ripped jeans and assorted jewelry, and backed by a band sporting black, Symba brought an even greater intimacy to his songs of determination.

The concert opens with a few standout singles: He sets the tone by swaggering through "Don't Condone," gleefully brandishing his King James cosign, before diving into the solemn misadventures of "Can't Win For Nothing." His small, six-person ensemble brings warmth and color out of his beats, particularly on the Dre-produced "Never End Up Broke," which breaks down into a lush alternate arrangement fit for the Blue Note jazz club.

After warming up, Symba works through several gripping cuts from his recent project with DJ Drama, Results Take Time. As he closes out his set with stirring renditions of the legacy-pondering "GOAT" and the status-affirming "Never Change," we bear witness to the truth of the album's title. When he raps, "I took the long route, not the wrong route," it feels like a prophecy fulfilled, proof that talent is always reinforced by work ethic.

Born Dante Terrell Smith on December 11, 1973, in Brooklyn, NY, Mos Def began rapping at age nine and began professionally acting at age 14, when he appeared in a TV movie. After high school, he began acting in a variety of television roles, most notably appearing in 1994 on a short-lived Bill Cosby series, The Cosby Mysteries. In 1994 Mos Def formed the rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics with his younger brother and sister, and signed a recording deal with Payday Records that didn't amount to much. In 1996 his solo career was launched with a pair of high-profile guest features on De La Soul's "Big Brother Beat" and Da Bush Babees' "S.O.S." A year later, in 1997, Mos Def released his debut single, "Universal Magnetic," on Royalty Records, and it became an underground rap hit. This led to a recording contract with Rawkus Records, which was just getting off the ground at the time, and he began working on a full-length album with like-minded rapper Talib Kweli and producer Hi-Tek. The resulting album, Black Star (1998), became one of the most celebrated rap albums of its time. A year later came Mos Def's solo album, Black on Both Sides, and it inspired further attention and praise. Yet, aside from appearances on the Rawkus compilation series Lyricist Lounge and Soundbombing, no follow-up recordings were forthcoming, as the up-and-coming rapper turned his attention elsewhere, away from music.

During the early 2000s, Mos Def acted in several films (Monster's Ball, Bamboozled, Brown Sugar, The Woodsman) and even spent some time on Broadway (the Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog). He simultaneously worked on the Black Jack Johnson project with several iconic black musicians: keyboardist Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Funkadelic), guitarist Dr. Know (Bad Brains), drummer Will Calhoun (Living Colour), and bassist Doug Wimbish (the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Living Colour). This project aimed to reclaim rock music, especially the rap-rock hybrid, from such artists as Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, who Mos Def openly despised. What made Black Jack Johnson so anticipated though was not so much the supergroup roster of musicians or even Mos Def himself, but rather the lack of black rock bands. Following the demise of Living Colour, there were few, if any, that had attained substantial success. Mos Def hoped to infuse the rock world with his all-black band, and during the early 2000s, he performed several small shows with his band around the New York area. In October 2004, he finally delivered a second solo album, The New Danger, which involved Black Jack Johnson on a few tracks.

Two years later, after a few more acting roles — including the Golden Globe-winning Lackawanna Blues and the Emmy-winning Something the Lord Made, both of which were made-for-television movies — Mos Def released his third solo album, True Magic (2006). A contract-fulfilling release for Geffen, which had absorbed Rawkus years prior, the album trickled out in a small run during the last week of 2006. Bizarrely, the disc came with no artwork and was sold in a clear plastic case — though its single, "Undeniable," did manage to grab a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. The Ecstatic, released on the Universal-distributed Downtown label, followed in June 2009; at that point, Mos Def had significant acting roles in Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind (in which he co-starred with Jack Black) and Cadillac Records (he played Chuck Berry).

Giorgio Moroder - Scarface: Expanded Motion Picture Soundtrack *1983* [FULL SOUNDTRACK] Hotney 9 Streams • 4 years ago

[Synth/Ambient/Electronic/Orchestration/Score/OST] "First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the soundtrack." Here is the complete official expanded film score to Brian De Palma's iconic mobster epic "Scarface" composed entirely by the legendary Giorgio Moroder. This video brings together all the score material composed for the film including the rare source cues and unreleased material that were used as ambient pieces in the movie. Also included is the official master tape tracks for "Success" by Joe Esposito, "Right Combination" by Beth Andersen and "Scarface (Push It To The Limit) & Extended by Paul Engemann (which were originally found in 2006's "Scarface: The World Is Yours" video game). Forty years after the release of De Palma's enduring early '80s crime drama "Scarface", starring Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Robert Loggia, La-La Land Records has presented fans with the entirety of the film's operatic synth pop score, finally released as a limited edition package in conjunction with the Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection (only 5000 copies exist). Film scores heighten emotions and create the mood for scenes, driving action and drawing tears. For De Palma's '83 remake - that arguably surpassed the original - of Scarface, he sought out the "Father of Disco," Italian composer, songwriter and record producer, Giorgio Moroder. At the time he was credited as the pioneer for euro disco, and had also composed the score for Flashdance, released that same year (1983). Moroder used his knowledge of synthesizers and unique vision, by incorporating elements of synth rock and disco, to elevate the film and make Scarface the legacy that it is today. In collaboration with Arthur Barrow, Sylvester Levay and Kristian Schultze, Moroder used clashing beats and haunting tones to create an aura of lavish bravado worthy of Tony Montana. For the score, the main synthesizers used by Moroder for the Scarface soundtrack were the Roland Jupiter-8 and the Yamaha CS-80. Personally this is my all time favorite synth film score that I am glad to finally see officially released to the public. Overall, this score is considered to be Giorgio Moroder 's synthesized magnum opus, and is a sinister and bold musicscape that captures the extravagance of the film. This complete OST soundtrack score was released under La-La Land Records & Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection '83 ('22).

DJ Premier & The Badder Band: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 9 Streams • 4 years ago

Aug 21, 2017 | Abby O'Neill | Three-time Grammy winner DJ Premier, one of the definitive architects of New York hip-hop, brought a new type of life to NPR's Tiny Desk: our first concert helmed by a DJ.

A packed house of head-nodding journalists grooved through their lunch hour to a nine-song medley of iconic Premier productions while decompressing from the unrelenting grind of the news cycle. The set list rested on the undeniable footprint of Preemo's classics, but this was more than just another DJ mix. His touring outfit, The Badder Band, overlaid Premier's blends with an undulating electric bass courtesy of Brady Watt, a steady accent on the one from drummer Lenny "The Ox" Reece and boisterous horns from Mark Williams and Jonathan Powell.

But it was Premier who remained front-and-center, commanding the crowd like a true party rocker. With throwbacks ranging from Gangstarr's "Step into the Arena" to an amped rendition of Jeru The Damaja's "Da Bitches," embellished by The Badder's jazzy horns, Preemo concluded the set with a "Moment of Truth," featuring the exalted rhymes of his posthumous Gangstarr partner, Guru.

Tiny Desk concerts are short by design, so naturally the format could barely scratch the surface of Premier's vault of street anthems, done for the likes of the Notorious B.I.G., JAY-Z, Nas, Kanye West, Big L, M.O.P., Mos Def, Group Home, Jeru the Damaja, AZ, Snoop Dogg, and many more. Even after a career spanning almost three decades, the man born Christopher Martin has managed to stay authentic to his analog grit and sample-chopping integrity, as if he were still an underdog.
