Today, we're diving into one of the most infamous moments in rock history - the time Prince opened for The Rolling Stones, and it went horribly wrong. Buckle up, because this story has it all - rock legends, an up-and-coming superstar, and a crowd that just wasn't having it."
Opening for another artist was nothing new for prince. He had opened for Rick James a year earlier on his Fire It Up Tour.
James recalled seeing Prince for the first time “My manager brought some tapes over and said, ‘Well, there’s this kid who’s got this record, ‘I Want to Be Your Lover,’ and I loved that record. And I saw some videos of him, and he was cool. I felt that he resembled us a lot,” But the two feuded on the road after Prince blew James off stage with James claiming prince was also ripping off his moves. So when it came to the shows opening for the Stones Prince wanted to show up the headliner.
Let's set the scene. It's October 9, 1981, and Prince isn't the megastar we know today. He's just a quirky upstart with one falsetto-sung pop-funk hit under his belt - 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. This is before 'he became a megasuperstar with hits like 1999,' before 'Purple Rain,' before 'Little Red Corvette.' But he soon caught the ear of Mick Jagger who saw his genius after seeinghim perform at the Ritz in New York City during his Dirty Mind tour.
The Stones Frontman remarked about Prince "Prince was a great artist. He broke a lot of musical modes and invented a lot of styles."
In 1981 the Stones were touring behind their album Tattoo On You. The tour was set to open with two shows at memorial stadium in Los Angeles on October 9 and 11th. An audience of 95,000 people were expected to attend each show. Prince was originally booked to open even more shows for The Stones, including two shows at The Silverdome in Detroit. Having Prince open for the Stones didn’t seem like a bad idea. Black artists including Tina Turner, Stevie Woner and Billy Preston had all opened for the Stones
Prince Keyboardist LisA Coleman remembered the feeling in the run up to the show in the book Prince the Man and HIs Music We were so excited, we’d rehearsed our little booties off, our funky black asses. This is it, we’re gonna make the big time.
Prince opened the show, followed by George Thorogood and J Geils band before the Stones took to the stage in the later part of the day. The first day was unseasonably hot and some members of the audience got there in the morning and had to listen to three support acts before the Stones came on.
"Picture this: It's a sunny afternoon, and Prince struts out on stage in his typical attire - a trench coat and bikini briefs. Yeah, you heard that right. Remember, this is 1981, and Prince's provocative style wasn't yet mainstream." "Now, Prince wasn't completely oblivious to his audience. He tried to bridge the gap by playing some of his rockier material. But it didn't matter. The crowd's reaction was immediate and hostile."
Drummer Bobby Z. recalled how the first moments of the show went in the book A Soldier in Prince’s Revolution
So concert promoter Bill Graham comes out and says, “All right, we’ve got a new act for you today.” Boo. Everybody wants the Stones
We start out with I think “Uptown” and they hear us singing falsetto. They’re not interested, they’re not willing, they’re certainly not tolerant. You’ve got three brothers up there. You’ve got weird-looking white people in the back. It’s New Age weird punky funk rock—all the stuff they don’t want to know about or be interested in. They just want the blues or rock and roll. They don’t want to listen to anything new—let alone from the guy who looks like a chick but he’s not a chick and the chicks like him.
The crowd shouted racist and ****phobic comments towards Prince and his band in addition to tossing objects like bottles, cans and fried chicken on stage.
Prince bassist Brown Mark who played with Prince for the first time that night recalled: "Next thing I noticed was food starting to fly through the air like a dark thundercloud. Imagine 94,000 people throwing food at each other; it was the craziest thing I had ever seen in my life. I got hit in the shoulder with a bag of fried chicken; then my guitar got knocked out of tune by a large

Meshell Ndegeocello: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 15 Streams • 2 years ago

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk is giving the ladies their flowers. We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women artists, from veterans who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music, to those who are carving out their own paths.

Nikki Birch | June 18, 2024
Experiencing all of the Tiny Desks this Black Music Month has made many of my dreams come true, and Meshell Ndegeocello’s performance was no exception. For 30 years the Grammy-winning artist’s music has cast an unflinching gaze on love, race, sexuality and religion. Her new album out in August, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, zooms out to focus on the love of humanity as inspired by the writer and civil rights activist.

Her performance includes three songs from that album, starting with “Travel,” which features Kenita Miller’s swirling whispers alongside Jake Sherman’s organ and Ndegeocello’s bass, which ushers us into her church service. “Thus Sayeth The Lorde,” references the writings of Audre Lorde: “If I did not define myself for myself, I’d be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” This conviction has been the binding agent of Ndegeocello’s career. Releasing her debut album at a time when many of the women who dominated Black music were singers who adopted an ultra-feminine aesthetic, as a bassist and vocalist she gallantly eschewed that standard for androgyny, fully embracing her ****, two-spirit identity.

“Love” continues this theme, urging you to allow love to take over and accept yourself in the face of existential crisis. The final songs of Ndegeocello’s Tiny Desk Concert are fan favorites. First, we’re sent off into space with the playful “Virgo,” from Ndegeocello’s album The Omnichord Real Book. Then she brings us back to Earth with the yearning “Outside Your Door.”

Lyrics:
Christmas is back y’all
Bells in the track y’all
Mall Santa scaring babies in his lap y’all

My baby’s cozy
She mistletoe’s me
Yeah, she be slaying that Mariah Karaoke

And all the Starbuckers in the line say
Put some peppermint mocha in my latte

Yeah, we fancy like Christmas round a fake tree
Nutcracker on the mantle
And a candy cane candle
Getcha eggnog, witcha fruit cake
Go Jesus, it’s your birthday
Bougie like blowups in the front yard
Hopin’ Santa gonna leave an Applebee's gift card
In my stocking even though we getting naughty all night
That’s how we do, how we do, fancy like Christmas

Got matching jammies on
We watching Home Alone
Yeah, you know Apple finna drop another iPhone

Traffic’s obnoxious
Dad’s at the office
He gotta pay for mama’s Amazon boxes

And all the Starbuckers in the line say
Put some peppermint mocha in my latte

Yeah, we fancy like Christmas round a fake tree
Nutcracker on the mantle
And a candy cane candle
Getcha eggnog, witcha fruit cake
Go Jesus, it’s your birthday
Bougie like blowups in the front yard
Hopin’ Santa gonna leave an Applebee's gift card
In my stocking even though we getting naughty all night
That’s how we do, how we do, fancy like Christmas

Big buck on the wall with a red nose on it
Leg lamp with some fishnet hose on it
So many lights we got the neighbors and the breakers tripping
Girl that ugly sweater got me grinch-grinning like
Kids better hit the hay fast y’all
Less you wanna see your mama kissing Daddy Claus

Yeah, we fancy like Christmas round a fake tree
Nutcracker on the mantle
And a candy cane candle
Getcha eggnog, witcha fruit cake
Go Jesus, it’s your birthday
Bougie like blowups in the front yard
Hopin’ Santa gonna leave an Applebee's gift card
In my stocking even though we getting naughty all night
That’s how we do, how we do, fancy like

LYRICS:

It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is
Livin' in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control

This world is changing I had to accept it
They ask my political views while I search for their hidden agendas
I don’t got an answer I try to remember the devil divides
Pressure appears from our peers
Those arguments waste our time
While helping to push their lies
So f*ck political views
I got common sense
I know God made man
And the sun sets
On a life where we focus on things that we cannot control
and accumulate so much regret
by the time we decide to live we're practically already dead
So I go sleep the thoughts of
45 years living in debt
45 years can't pay rent
45 years just for a pension
I’m to old to enjoy and go spend
45 years working and slaving for rich men with no time for my family and friends
Then I wake up and pray that it ends

Livin' in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control

Decedents of Adam and Eve
The apple doesn’t far from the tree
They're taking God out the schools
Our kids don’t know what to believe
From 6 to 18 the curriculum fails and gen Z gets taught by their phones with forced feeds that get sponsored and paid by companies
that’s how they attack us it starts with the youth
If you lie enough you’ll convince anybody the lie is the truth
so telling these kids they can choose their own gender at ages they can’t even tie their own shoes, drive, or drink is crazy
common sense isn't common unless it pays me
that’s thought process daily
look at the content were creating lies
Diluting our brains
I’m done trying to argue online with these people who think that a votes gonna bring about change
how many presidents does it take?
To have a live worth living?
An actual comfortable wage?
No school shooting?
Let's unite these states

It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is
Livin' in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
