Here are three groundbreaking TV ads developed through Steve Stoute's marketing firm, Translation, that ran extensively on TV in 1996. The first places MC Shan and KRS-1 in a boxing ring (announcer is Kid Capri, Red Alert is behind Kris. Marley Marl is Shan's corner man), connecting one of hip hop's earlest "Beefs" on wax with lemon-lime flavored carbonated water. Second, generational intersectionality occurs when father and son both enjoy their favorite pop while listening to versions of "You're all I need To Get By," by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell and Method Man & Mary J. Blige (respectively). Finally, singer/actor Tyrese Gibson was introduces to the world as the young man who captures everyone's attention (and a woman's heart) when he makes his entrance on a downtown bus. Stoute's 2011 book, The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy, is a must-read for further understanding of how street culture became corporate culture and how the acceptance of Black music through visual media helped create the landscape that permitted the first Black President in the USA. TV commercial," "Hip-hop farmers 1993 Budweiser TV ad," "Eggo "In Yo Mouth 1994 hip-hop TV ad," "1984 hip-hop breakdance TV ad for Crunch & Munch," "1987 hip-hop rap ad for Miller Lite = worst rap ever?," and "1987 hip-hop rap ad for Mervyns, animated = worst rap ever?"

BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on Youtube or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.

In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area. This upload features materials protected by the Fair Use guidelines of Section 107 of the Copyright Act. All rights reserved to the copyright owners. To be used for research and archive purposes only, no commercial reproduction allowed.

Honey Cone was an American R&B and soul all–girl vocal group, who are best remembered for their Billboard #1 hit single, "Want Ads". They were the premier female group for Hot Wax Records, operated by Holland–Dozier–Holland after they had departed from Motown Records.

Honey Cone was formed by lead singer Edna Wright (sister of Darlene Love) with Carolyn Willis and Shelly Clark in 1969. They were the newly created Hot Wax Records' first signing to the fledgling record label. The trio had previous musical experience with Willis, a member of Girlfriends, Clark an ex-member of the Ikettes, and Wright, a member of a gospel group the Cogics. Wright and Willis were also "part-time" members of Love's group The Blossoms.

Honey Cone and Hot Wax's debut single "While You're Out Looking for Sugar" peaked at #26 on Billboard's R&B chart, but the follow-up "Girls, It Ain't Easy," reached #8 on the same listing. Their third release "Want Ads" proved to be their biggest success, topping both the R&B and pop chart, selling over one million copies, awarded with a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in May 1971. - wikipedia

Famous jeweler Ben Baller detailed his life and career in a new VladTV exclusive. He broke down his background and the impact the Korean War had on his parents. Although he was born to hardworking immigrant parents, Ben Baller had early run-ins with the law before immersing himself in early Hip-Hop culture through breakdancing. After college, he started off as Tia Carrera's assistant before becoming a DJ. Leveraging his relationship through DJing led Ben Baller to a job at Priority Records, where he was eventually elevated to Senior Executive VP of A&R. This year i got more lucky than last year. Just one month before the festival begins, i got a mail from Tomorrowland about Waiting List Sale that i have a chance to buy a ticket. I really thought it was not possible. You are lucky or not but this time, more lucky than this is not possible. It was really stressful because when i enter the ticket shop, less than 5 seconds was all sold out what was left but thankfully, one ticket became available just what i want! After that, i got mixed feelings. I was mad and happy!!

1984 was a particularly flamboyant year for British Pop. “Relax” overcame its radio ban to spend five weeks at UK number one. George Michael alluded to his future solo aspirations with “Careless Whisper.” Pete Burns’ Dead Or Alive proved the combination of Hi NRG and Stock Aitken Waterman equalled chart-success. And Freddie Mercury dressed in drag for the “I Want to Break Free” video. But aside from the two core members of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, most of these men were living some kind of closeted existence.

However, also debuting in 1984 were Bronski Beat. Fronted by Jimmy Somerville, a Scottish socialist with the voice of a disco diva packed within his buzz cut 5 foot 4 frame, they were three openly **** men writing honestly about their lives. Their melancholic debut single is a synth-pop escape, from a smalltown and its small minds, with its destination simply being somewhere better, both for themselves and LGBTQ+ Pop. This is New British Canon and This is the Story of “Smalltown Boy”.
