#powerman5000

Powerman 5000’s story begins with Michael Cummings (Spider One), younger brother of Rob Zombie, growing up in a normal Massachusetts home obsessed with TV, comics, and music. He drifted from Elton John and The Beatles into punk and hardcore, getting inspired by bands like The Clash and Black Flag. Dropping out of art school in Boston, he became MC Spider, making sample‑heavy tapes that blended rap and industrial sounds, earning local recognition and a “Best Rap Act” award. Wanting a full band, he teamed with drummer Al Pahanish, bassist Dorian Heartsong, guitarist Adam Williams, and percussionist Jordan Cohen to form Powerman 5000 in 1991, carving out a weird, energetic niche in the Boston scene.

Their early releases on indie label Curve of the Earth, including the EP True Force and the album The Blood-Splat Rating System, built a cult following with a chaotic “action rock” sound and high‑energy shows. This buzz led to A&R interest, Ozzfest slots, and even a cameo on Beverly Hills, 90210, though that TV exposure didn’t translate into big sales. A DreamWorks deal followed, and the band’s debut was remixed and reissued as Mega!! Kung Fu Radio, sharpening their industrial, sci‑fi‑tinged direction and landing them tours with acts like Marilyn Manson, Korn, and Kiss.

Everything peaked with 1999’s Tonight the Stars Revolt!, a retro‑futuristic, hooky sci‑fi metal record that went platinum. Anchored by “When Worlds Collide” and “Nobody’s Real,” the album put them into heavy MTV and radio rotation and onto huge tours, their matching space outfits and visual world becoming part of the appeal. Despite the family connection, Spider tried to keep Rob Zombie out of the marketing narrative, insisting PM5K’s success came from years of grinding, not nepotism.

The turning point came with the follow‑up, Anyone for Doomsday?. With lead single “Bombshell” already gaining traction and a tour booked, Spider abruptly shelved the finished album, feeling it was too much of a retread of Tonight the Stars Revolt! and choosing artistic change over playing it safe. The decision, made shortly before 9/11, devastated internal morale: longtime members Dorian Heartsong and Al Pahanish quit, the band’s momentum evaporated, and their relationship with DreamWorks deteriorated.

Spider rebuilt the lineup and returned in 2003 with Transform, ditching the space‑suit aesthetic and much of the electronic sheen for a rawer, punk‑influenced sound rooted in his early heroes like The Clash and Sex Pistols. Lyrically, he doubled down on themes of class, culture, and resistance to manufactured pop culture, but label upheaval and DreamWorks’ sale meant the album received little support before the band was dropped. In the years that followed, PM5K survived on smaller labels and DIY approaches, cycling through members and sounds: punkier on Destroy What You Enjoy, then re‑embracing sci‑fi and electronics on records like Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere, Builders of the Future, New Wave, The Noble Rot, and Abandon Ship.

Your script frames their history as a clash between art and commerce: a band that chose not to repeat its biggest success, imploded at its commercial peak because of that choice, but kept evolving on its own terms. It ends by asking whether shelving Anyone for Doomsday? was a brave artistic stand or a self‑inflicted wound that cost them their shot at lasting mainstream stardom, while acknowledging their three‑decade longevity and Spider’s stubborn, rebellious drive.

Shanice | True Story of “I Love Your Smile,” Singing For Michael Jackson & Ella Fitzgerald Hotney 14 Streams • 5 months ago

See Shanice as Michelle Obama in 44: The Musical: https://44theobamamusical.com/

Shanice sits down with Shawn Stockman for a deep, story-filled conversation that feels like an R&B history lesson and a behind-the-scenes masterclass. She takes us back to the moment “I Love Your Smile” became a global hit, including the label decisions she fought for and the ones she wishes had gone differently. The conversation also comes full circle with the childhood dream she spoke out loud as a kid—wanting to meet Michael Jackson—and how that dream later became reality when she ended up singing background vocals on several of his records.

Along the way, Shanice shares incredible “Easter egg” moments from her career: booking a commercial at just nine years old alongside Ella Fitzgerald, winning Star Search, and navigating the unpredictable realities of the music industry. She also opens up about losing her record deal while five months pregnant, a moment that revealed how labels treated female artists at the time. From unexpected collaborations to legendary industry connections—including stories involving Justin Timberlake, Babyface, and Barbra Streisand—this episode is packed with music history, honesty, and unforgettable moments.

It doesn’t really need an explanation—you know exactly what Kehlani means when she sings. Without sugarcoating or softening a word, the Bay Area-born two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated multiplatinum songstress will drop a hard truth in one breath and flip a middle finger in the next. She may extend a seductive invitation or an empathetic plea before leaving you in your thoughts and feelings. Either way, she finds a way to consistently relate without filter. With each move, she strengthens this connection to listeners everywhere. Kehlani’s 2015 breakout mixtape You Should Be Here received a 2016 GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of “Best Urban Contemporary Album.” On its heels, her 2017 full-length debut SweetSexySavage bowed at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually went gold. Between selling out dates on the SweetSexySavage Tour, the record closed out the year on Pitchfork’s “The 50 Best Albums of 2017” and Rolling Stone’s “20 Best R&B Albums of 2017.”

Along the way, she contributed to Suicide Squad: The Album and The Fate of the Furious: The Album and guested on Cardi B’s double-platinum “Ring,” Kyle’s platinum “PLAYINWITME,” and Justin Bieber’s “Get Me,” to name a few. By 2020, she picked up three gold solo singles—"You Should Be Here,” “Honey,” and “Distraction,” for which she received her second GRAMMY® nomination for Best R&B performance. In addition, four platinum singles—“Gangsta,” “The Way” [feat. Chance the Rapper], “CRZY,” and “Nights Like This” [feat. Ty Dolla $ign] and streams in the billions. Not to mention, Billboard Women In Music honored her with the “Rule Breaker Award” as she gathered nominations at the Soul Train Awards and the American Music Awards. Plus, she made show-stopping appearances at Voodoo Music + More, Coachella, and beyond. In the aftermath of 2019’s chart-topping While We Wait mixtape, everything changed. She became a mom. As such, parenthood left an indelible imprint on her second full-length, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. Out May 8th, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t is described by Kehlani as her most mature body of work, featuring songs based on her own real experiences including recently released “Toxic” and “Everybody Business.” In the end, you’ll know exactly what’s on Kehlani’s mind, heart, and soul on It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.

Lyric:

Y poco a poco, fui creciendo
Y la vida me enseñó
Que tienes que ser decente
Con el que un día te humilló

Bien recuerdo aquellos tiempos

Después kilos, hoy me estoy riendo

Después kilos, y hoy me estoy riendo

Y a los que no me creían

Yo ando fuerte todavía

Mobb Deep’s Havoc on Prodigy, 2Pac beef, Jay-Z Summer Jam & almost signing to Diddy | Real Repor Hotney 7 Streams • 2 months ago

This episode of The Real Report with Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda features Mobb Deep legend Havoc for a raw conversation about legacy, survival, and the stories behind some of hip-hop’s most important records. Havoc breaks down life after a 40-country tour, his sobriety, the pressure of proving himself with new music, and the early days of meeting Prodigy, recording “Shook Ones,” and building the Mobb Deep sound that helped define Queensbridge. Yayo and Murda take it back to wild tour memories, G-Unit stories with 50 Cent, the Henny era, and the moment Mobb Deep and M.O.P. signed to G-Unit, while Havoc opens up about the East Coast-West Coast tension, 2Pac dissing Mobb Deep, the Jay-Z and Prodigy Summer Jam moment, the Lost Boyz brawl, and the rumor that Mobb Deep almost signed with Puff. From “Quiet Storm” and “Shook Ones” to Timberlands, army jackets, production talk, life without Prodigy, and whether another Mobb Deep album is coming, this episode is packed with classic hip-hop history, street stories, hilarious pause moments, and real reflection from one of rap’s most respected producers and MCs.

Sample Breakdown - The Main Ingredient [1994] | Pete Rock & CL Smooth
Sample Breakdown - The Main Ingredient [1994] | Pete Rock & CL Smooth Hotney 7 Streams • 2 months ago

[Release Date]
The Main Ingredient is the second album by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, released on October 8, 1994. It would become their last album together.

[Music]
Characterized by sultry soul and jazz samples, The Main Ingredient saw a more polished sound than the duo’s debut, building on the praise that they had already garnered. The album is notable for its snappy, crispy drums and extensive use of vocal scratches, usually from songs by Biz Markie. Although missing a centerpiece on the scale of "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)", the album contains some of the duo's best known work, in the form of tracks such as the upbeat "In The House", and the catchy "Sun Won't Come Out", which features a lush vocal sample from the song of the same name by Harvey Scales.

Continuing a theme initiated by Mecca and the Soul Brother, brief instrumental interludes are placed at the beginning and end of songs. With the exception of just a few tracks, this feature is recurrent throughout the album. In addition, The Main Ingredient saw Rock fleshing out and defining his trademark production style, which is now recognized for often containing smooth basslines, swirling horns, filtered samples, and spacious grooves. The production on this album proved to be influential upon a legion of latter day producers.

[Reception]
Though overlooked at the time of its release, the album has since been re-evaluated with high critical acclaim. AllMusic's Stanton Swihart called it "an album that is far more focused" and "just as good as the first record, perhaps an even more satisfying single listen." Swihart described Rock's production work as "among some of the most seductive in hip-hop", and CL as "lyrically on point, spitting out intellectual rhymes and narratives that are just as propulsive and engaging as the music."

"I Got A Love" was the album's lead off single, followed by "Take You There" and "Searching", released in 1995. That same year, the duo appeared in a well received Sprite commercial; however, they soon announced their breaking up citing creative differences, although both parties have since admitted that an unstable working relationship was the main cause of their split. The album was a favorite of the late producer J Dilla, who played it while meeting with Pete Rock to record Slum Village's "Once Upon A Time" for the album, Fantastic, Vol. 2 in 1998.

LYRICS
I got a lot to say to you, yeah, I got a lot to say
I notice your eyes are always glued to me
You're keeping them here and it makes no sense at all

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
Your little spies
They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
Your little spies

Crush, crush, crush
Crush, crush
(Two, three, four!)

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two, I was just counting on
That never happens, I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than this

If you want to play it like a game
Well, come on, come on, let's play
'Cause I'd rather waste my life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
Your little spies
They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
Your little spies

Crush, crush, crush
Crush, crush
(Two, three, four!)

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two, I was just counting on
That never happens, I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than this now

Rock and roll, baby, don't you know
That we're all alone now? I need something to sing about
Rock and roll, honey, don't you know, baby
We're all alone now? I need something to sing about
Rock and roll, hey, don't you know, baby
We're all alone now? Give me something to sing about

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two, I was just counting on
That never happens, I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than, no!

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two, I was just counting on
That never happens, I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than, more than this, oh

Lyrics:
Oooh
Too lit
Forgot who I was talking to- shit
I don’t wanna sabotage this
but love ain’t how they advertised it

I just hope you understand yeah
I know you be talkin to your friends

Ooooooh ya tired
And it feels one sided

Little misguided
but I ain’t lookin for no side dick

I know I be fuckin up the plans
so I just wanna say it in advance

Even though I thought I was right
I was goin off that night
Sometimes I’m not that nice
Even though I’m not that type
I just had to call for forgiveness
I know it’s at least in double digits
And I do it all the time yeah
Thinkin you can read my fuckin mind

I keep assuming
that you’re gonna do shit
That might break my heart
So I keep up my guard
And I know it’s confusing
How I put you through it
My past and my scars
Still make it hard

Always the worst I assume
Don’t get me closer to you

I been sippin on light aye
I’m just tryna pick a fight aye yeah
Wonder if it’s real life aye
Or if I’m just in a mood

I know this can’t be safe
Arguin’ on the freeway
Makin shit about me baë on ya bday

Even though I thought I was right
I was goin’ off that night
Sometimes I’m not that nice
Even though I’m not that type
I just had to call for forgiveness
I know it’s at least in double digits
And I do it all the time yeah
Thinkin you can read my fuckin mind

I keep assuming
that you’re gonna do shit
I keep up my guard
Protect my heart

And know it’s confusing
How I put you through it
My past and my scars
Still make it hard

You keep assuming
I know what I’m doing

There is no thrilling chorus that shakes the flow of the entire song, but Zion.T shows his feelings with the most pure power, ‘Family’.

It’s a family story that compares his father’s path to ‘Yanghwa BRDG’. Although this is a personal story of Zion.T, it goes out to everyone, including sons, daughters, fathers and mothers. Like the stories told to best friend, and putting out words from your diaries, all the lyrics in the song can be objects of sympathy. So it is a comfort and happy song for fathers, sons, and all families. Although he doesn’t show ‘too much’ emotions, he shows his feelings in his own way.
