Footpaths and a man-made stream bisect Anderson Park, an open grassy area in the middle of the Aspen Ideas Festival campus. An 800-pole bamboo sculpture was under construction nearby where Nickel Creek’s Chris Thile, violinist Sofia Hashemi-Asasi, and students from the Aspen Music School were setting up for this performance.

Thile was excited as he coached the group through a rehearsal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for 2 Violins in D Minor, BWV 1043, 3rd Movement. Soon, an audience gathered on the hill to watch the concert and we were finally ready to begin. The long grass rustled close to our microphones and added a texture of tranquility to this joyful performance.

Afterward, Thile played two of his own compositions, “Dionysus” and “Ecclesiastes 2:24.” Before his paean to the god of wine-making, he said “So I think this is undeniably a nice place, right here, part of the natural world that we get so little of these days and it brings to mind wine for me, because I feel like that's one of the most successful collaborations humankind has had with the natural world.”

Before wrapping things up, Thile got emotional. “It’s good for a person to eat and drink and take pleasure in their work, and I don't know when I’ve made music with people who were taking more pleasure in their work, than these extraordinary young musicians I just got to play the third movement of the Bach double with,” Thile said. “I feel very very lucky in the moment.”

‘Antidote’ feat. Sam Fischer was written back in September 2022 and is the first collaboration from the pair. With plaintive piano, atmospheric guitars and complex drum loops, ‘Antidote’ was initially recorded at Guy’s home studio in Sydney.

Guy says of the single; “Sam and I had been talking about how music had shaped – and pretty much saved – our lives from such a young age, so we made this song about music being an antidote for us. Music is that central thing that pulls me back – all the time – into this place of feeling safe and grounded. I know I’ll always have my music and will continue to share it as long as there are ears that want to hear it. The thing that excites me the most is that the listener will have their own “antidote” and make it their story. Having our fans be able to be the main character in our songs is the thing that excites me most as a songwriter.”

Sam adds “Guy and I wrote ‘Antidote’ together at the end of 2022. Guy got the title from a friend's vows which is so appropriate because the song is about finding the kind of love that saves you. Whether that love comes in the form of a person or a passion like music or even self-love, it's rare to find and once you do it's life-changing and saving. Also just to say, two beautiful boys singing a power ballad about all consuming love is something that hasn't been done in a while and I'm stoked and honoured to be able to fill that space with one of the greatest voices on the planet, my OG idol, Guy m’fing Sebastian!”
