Kirsty Hawkshaw, the voice behind Opus III’s 1992 hit ‘It’s A Fine Day’, shares the making of one of UK dance music’s most beloved hits.

Hawkshaw gives DJ Mag an insight into her musical upbringing – from growing up as the daughter of famous composer Alan Hawkshaw, the man behind the iconic Countdown theme tune, to becoming a part of the travelling free party scene in the '90s with Spiral Tribe – and recalls recording her vocals for the single, an interpretation of an Edward Barton poem originally sung by Jane, in a kitchen in Sunderland.

Produced by Kevin Dodds, Ian Munro and Nigel Walton, 'It's A Fine Day' became an instant hit, and launched Kirsty into the spotlight with TV interviews, Top of the Pops performances and worldwide shows, an experience she wasn't always comfortable with.

From Orbital's 'Halcyon' to Skrillex & Boys Noize's 2023 hit 'Fine Day Anthem', Hawkshaw's vocal has been sampled countless times. 32 years later, she shares her feelings on this phenomenon, and speaks about what the track still means to her today.

Poetic Justice (1993), a John Singleton masterpiece, brought together a powerhouse cast to create one of the most iconic films of the 1990s. The film starred Janet Jackson, who made her big-screen debut as Justice, a poetic hairstylist grieving the loss of her boyfriend. Her chemistry with Tupac Shakur (2Pac), who played Lucky, a postal worker with dreams of a better life, was electric. The dynamic duo brought Singleton’s nuanced script to life, blending tender moments with raw emotion, set against the backdrop of South Central Los Angeles.

Regina King added another layer of brilliance as Iesha, Justice's sharp-witted and spirited best friend, delivering a performance that was equal parts comedic and heartfelt. King’s portrayal solidified her as a rising star destined for greatness.

At the helm, Singleton, fresh off the success of Boyz n the Hood, used Poetic Justice to weave a heartfelt story about love, loss, and healing within the Black community. The Jacksons (Michael, Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Randy, LaToya, Janet) participated in the Rock 'n' Roll Sports Classic (May 3rd, 1978), an ABC special that pitted music stars against one another in a series of athletic events. Michael participated in the men's 60-meter dash (placing 6th / eight) and in the swim relay and the tug o' war, with his team winning each of these events, as well as the overall competition.

Participants included: Boston, The Commodores, ELO, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Jacksons, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Runaways, Seals & Crofts, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., Rod Stewart, The Runaways, Kenny Loggins, Tanya Tucker, and Leif Garrett.
