How to Play Mustang Sally on Guitar

THIS is a song that I struggled with learning for a while. It wasn’t the chords that I struggled with or the song form, those are both very common patterns. Where I got stuck was with the actual guitar part to play from the recording.

It sounded like one guitar but I couldn’t quite get my part to sound like the recording. So for years, I played this song on gigs with just a common rhythm accompaniment that wasn’t like the guitar part on the recording. It wasn’t until later I finally went back and figured it out from the recording. It’s actually TWO guitars.

In this “Mustang Sally” guitar lesson, I want to share with you the chords, rhythms, and scales to start jamming it with ease today! I’ll break down the guitar parts from the recording and share how you can combine them to play a great pattern for this song on one guitar.

Also, it’s a valuable song to know because it comes up at many jam sessions and parties. A lot of people play it!

So with that said make sure you’re tuned up and let’s dive in!

What is the meaning behind Mustang Sally?
“Mustang Sally” was originally written and first recorded by Mack Rice. Rice recorded it in 1965 and it was released under the artist name “Sir Mack Rice”.

The legend is that Rice had originally written the song as a joke for a fellow gospel singer he knew from Della Reese’s band who wanted a new Ford Mustang car.

Apparently, the original title of the song was “Mustang Mama”, but was later changed to “Mustang Sally” at the suggestion of Aretha Franklin.

I think that actually deserves songwriting credit if it’s true. That’s a nice contribution and makes the song pull more because it’s more specific. Unfortunately, from my research, it looks like she didn’t get credit.

The song later became more popular after Wilson Pickett covered it the following year. It was first released as a single, and then later included on his album The Wicked Pickett released in 1966.

Plus in 1966, John Lee Hooker also recorded an entirely different song with a very similar title “Mustang Sally & GTO”

Mustang Sally Chords
“Mustang Sally” only uses 3 chords. The song is in the key of C major and uses the I, IV, and V chords, C, F, and G.

Seit 2005 machen die beiden Schwestern Rebecca und Megan Lovell gemeinsam Musik. Starke Harmonien, Slide-Gitarre und klassische Southern Rock-Elemente treffen bei Larkin Poe hin und wieder auch auf heavy E-Gitarren-Riffs, was der Band Vergleiche mit den Allman Brothers einbrachte.
Aufgewachsen in Georgia machen Rebecca und Megan zunächst gemeinsam mit ihrer älteren Schwester Jessica Musik im Akustik-Trio The Lovell Sisters. Nach vier Jahren inklusive Tourneen und selbst produzierten Alben löst sich die Band 2009 auf. 2010 kommen Megan und Rebecca wieder zusammen und taufen die neue Band nach ihrem Ur-Ur-Urgroßvater Larkin Poe, angeblich ein Cousin des berühmten Schriftstellers Edgar Allan Poe.
Nach einigen in Eigenregie veröffentlichten EPs und Mitwirkungen auf Alben befreundeter Bands unterschreiben die Schwestern 2013 einen Plattenvertrag. 2014 erscheint Larkin Poes Debütalbum "Kin". Ihre Zusammenarbeit mit Produzent T Bone Burnett macht sie bekannter, und 2014 und 2016 spielen Larkin Poe auf dem Glastonbury Festival in England. 2017 sind Larkin Poe die Backingband von Stars wie Jackson Browne und Don Henley beim Tom Petty-Tribut-Konzert von "MusiCares" in Los Angeles. Ihr Album "Venom & Faith" aus dem Jahr 2018 erreichte Platz 1 der Billboard Blues-Album-Charts und wurde für einen Grammy als "Best contemporary blues album" nominiert.
2020 erschien "Self Made Man" und erreichte ebenfalls Platz 1 der Billboard Blues-Album-Charts. Noch im selben Jahr erschien mit "Kindred Spirits" ein Coveralbum mit Songs von u.a. Lenny Kravitz, Phil Collins, Neil Young und Elvis Presley. 2022 erschien das sechste Album "Blood Harmony".

Christian McBride might be the hardest working man in show business, or at least the hardest working bass player in jazz.

He's a tireless road warrior, traveling the world as the leader of his own big band and his New Jawn quartet, recording and performing with a long and genre-fluid list of musicians from Sting and Herbie Hancock to Rhiannon Giddens and Renée Fleming. He's the artistic director of the legendary Newport Jazz Festival, and he serves as an artistic advisor and director for several other institutions including the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, where we filmed this conversation. He hosts and produces The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian on SiriusXM, and Jazz Night in America for NPR and WBGO. He's played on more than 300 recordings and won eight Grammys. He's a composer, producer, curator, educator, and ambassador. He literally never stops.

There are many reasons why people are driven to push themselves to their limits. But for Christian, it's simple. He just loves music. When he plays, when he talks about music or thinks about it or listens to it, he lights up with pure joy. And joy like that, in our world today, is powerful.

In our conversation, Christian and I point to some of the artists who inspire us the most, and who loved music with that same insatiable kind of exuberance: Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Dr. Billy Taylor. They never stopped either – searching, learning, teaching, preaching – working harder than they had to. They always did more, gave more; there was so much they wanted to share.

Keeping up with Christian McBride isn't easy. But wherever he goes, his delight in music reaches far and wide, because joy like that is unstoppable.
