About Royal Blood

Brighton duo Royal Blood comprising drummer Ben Thatcher and bassist/vocalist Mike Kerr formed at the beginning of 2013. They quickly made their presence known, with pounding drums and heavily distorted bass guitar defining characteristics of their ferocious blues-rock sound. The band gained many plaudits early in their career, touring with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop and Foo Fighters, before going on to win Best British Group at the Brits in 2015 receiving their trophy from their musical hero and admirer Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

Rapper YNW Melly is accused of killing two of his best friends, YNW Juvy and YNW SakChaser, after leaving a South Florida recording studio back in October of 2018. He went to trial last year, but a judge declared a mistrial in July after the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. YNW Melly is scheduled to be in court Friday for a motions hearing and his second trial is expected to begin in March.

It is difficult to merely take in a performance by the Rwandan group known as The Good Ones. The pathos of the band and the country’s recent history permeates the duo’s existence and its music.

Adrian Kazigira and Janvier Havugimana were taught music by the latter’s older brother, who then perished during the country’s brutal genocide. They formed a band as a way to process their nation’s trauma and also bring together Rwanda’s three tribes: Tutsi, Hutu, and Abatwa.

From the start, the simple guitar fingerpicking style and very sparse rhythm guide the plaintive vocals into a trance-like meditation. The music is a fascinating mix of guitar strumming that combines the kind of cyclical song form you hear on the West African kora and vocal harmonizing common to many African musical traditions.

The group’s origin story may be tragic, but The Good Ones’ determination to spread its musical message is an inspiration.

Back in 2008, the same year my colleagues Bob Boilen and Stephen Thompson dreamt up the idea for these Tiny Desk concerts, a cohort of freelance musicians formed in New York, calling itself yMusic (referring to "Gen Y" millennials). That random aligning of planets has now resulted in this terrific performance at the NPR office space with four original compositions in a musical language that borrows from classical and pop but could only be yMusic.

The band's unique sound is born not only from the tight construction and performance of the music, but also from the yMusic's quirky setup. How many other sextets of trumpet, clarinet, flute, violin, viola and cello do you know?

The set opens with "Zebras," inspired by the frenzied clicking keys of Mark Dover's bass clarinet. Music emerges softly but takes flight when flutist Alex Sopp doubles on vocals. Chugging rhythms propel "Flood" as solos are passed around, while the more contemplative "Peter Inn" showcases lovely muted colors in the winds, with intrepid trumpeter CJ Camerieri switching to French horn. "The Wolf" closes the set with yMusic rising to its loudest, driven by a clever yipping theme in the winds as cello and viola slide up the scale.

yMusic is completely at home backing up the likes of Paul Simon, The National and Dirty Projectors, or performing music it has commissioned from today's top composers including Andrew Norman and Caroline Shaw at upscale venues like Carnegie Hall. Genres be damned.

MC Serch - 3rd Bass Medley (Live Session) | Vevo ctrl

Far Rock in the house! For our Hip-Hop At 50 celebrations this year, we’ve invited rhymers of all eras and geographies to step up to the ctrl microphone. MC Serch - real name Michael Berrin - is a cipher of the NYC hip-hop scene’s evolution from the formative ‘80s into the ubiquitous cultural power it became in the ‘90s. Dude was kicking it with Nas back when he was Nasty Nas, and cutting tracks at Chung King before the studio was a cultural landmark. Originally born in Queens, Serch made his name as a member of 3rd Bass. The white rap duo made it a mission to honor the Black genre that they loved, in part by seeking production from influential Big Apple producer Prince Paul who helmed their Def Jam release ‘The Cactus Album.’ Real heads will love riding with Serch down memory lane with his six-minute medley of 3rd Bass cuts, including the infamous 1991 diss track “Pop Goes The Weasel,” which partied at the upper end of the charts partly thanks to Serch’s acerbic bars aimed at Vanilla Ice (in order, he busted out “Back To The Grill,” “Pop Goes The Weasel,” “Product Of The Environment,” “Brooklyn Queens,”and “Gas Face” to close). It was clear from the jump that the OG hauled a big bag ‘o bars from his Brooklyn beach town to our studio. He also brought his pal Bobby J From Rockaway for a run through their latest collab “Round Here.” Fun day for everyone involved.
