Lars Gotrich | August 30, 2024
How rare is it for the same group of musicians to create not one but two beloved bands of the punk scene? Around the turn of the millennium, pg. 99 pushed heavy music to its most chaotic extremes, inspiring tattoos and the next generation of hardcore. Then a few members of pg. 99 started Pygmy Lush — something quieter and sweeter, though no less experimental.

Pygmy Lush never broke up, life just happened; this Tiny Desk is the atmospheric folk band’s first live performance in seven years. While its catalog can get noisy, Pygmy Lush here relies on haunted campfire singalongs from 2008’s Mount Hope (“Asphalt,” “Dead Don’t Pass” and “Hard to Swallow”) and “It’s a Good Day to Hide” from its split LP with the hardcore band Turboslut. Like those records, the foundations here are simple — acoustic guitars, looped melodies, repeated phrases, hushed vocals — but its gentle swells allow small feelings to grow roots and wander.

Blood and chosen family surrounds this set. Chris and Mike Taylor’s mother came to see Pygmy Lush perform for the very first time — the way they lit up when she entered the NPR Music office is too precious for words. Johnny Ward’s mother sat beside her. Mike Widman’s eldest daughter sings on “Hard to Swallow.” And, because Pygmy Lush has always featured an orbit of collaborators, Aimée Argote from the shapeshifting indie-rock band Des Ark plays piano and sings — their touch is so delicate, yet gives the monochromatic mood so much color.

Pygmy Lush closes this Tiny Desk with “I’ll Wait with You,” a personal request of mine. In years previous, I’ve seen the band howl its catharsis with deafening volume: “To the end,” a declaration of friendship forged in and through hardship. An unbreakable bond. Here, the scream becomes a smile, a promise.

Lyrics:
I know what it’s like to lose
Do you? Do you?
Have you ever loved someone...
Then lost that one?
You can’t even call their phone
You can’t even ask how their day was
Nothing in life’s guaranteed
You’ll see
I’m not being difficult
I just see things differently
When I say I wanna see you
That means something different to me

I’ve been missing for
10 thousand hours
I can not let go
10 thousand memories
( x2)

Have you ever loved someone
Then lost that one
Have you ever missed someone
That ain’t coming back?
You can’t even tell that one
Cuz they’re not here to hear it
Do you hear me?
Nothing in life’s guaranteed
You’ll see
I’m not being difficult
I just see things differently
You don’t see the urgency
That really worries me
The problem is, naturally
That we think
We have time
But you’ll find
Anything can happen
Don’t take it for granted
You know...

I’ve been missing for
10 thousand hours
I can not let go
10 thousand memories
( x2)

(Nas)

Thinking back on some good times
We had with some bad people, like
I shoulda saw she was see through or he was evil, like
I wasted my good experience with these people, like
Guess it was meant to be you was teaching me life
So only have that memories worth while
We had beef, but at least there’s a birth of a child
Cool, then flip it reminiscing bad times with good people’s terrific
Beautifully different, cuz we still kick it
You said we can’t be intimate you said we can’t go there
If this thing is going nowhere it’s so weird now it’s cold
Thought I had control, thought I took your soul
Nah I took your mind engraved my name
You told me that my mind is your favorite place to hang
10 thousand hours turned to 10 thousand brighter flowers
What was mine is ours
How many soulmates we get in this life time?
Right now’s the right time
You the wife kind

You will search your whole life tryna find
A love as good as the kind we had, we had
Every person that comes in your life
Is here for a limited time
So be fair... be there

Always planning never manifesting
Father please help me send him this message
Always planning never manifesting
Father please help me send him this message

Lyrics:
Well I got up early on this Lord’s day
With the sun peekin’ through the curtains
Thought I’d wet a line
For a couple good hours
And still make the 10 o’clock sermon
But the sky is blue
And the breeze is cool
And they’re bitin’ good not to mention
If I left right now
Might make it somehow
But I doubt I could pay attention

I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
In the middle of his creation
In an old Jon Boat with my Zip pole rod
For some private conversation
There might be a few people talkin’ bad about me
When they see that I’m a’missin’
But I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
Than in church with my mind on fishin’

Well I like that preacher
And I love how it feels
When he really gets to throwin’ down
But I’d rather do my talkin’ with the man upstairs
When there’s nobody else around
If I was there right now
I’d be thinkin’ ‘bout which lure I was gonna cast
And he don’t need another fool
Sittin’ in that pew
Dreamin’ ‘bout a ten pound bass

I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
In the middle of his creation
In and old Jon Boat with my Zip pole rod
For some private conversation
There might be a few people talkin’ bad about me
When they see that I’m a’missin’
But I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
Than in church with my mind on fishin’

With my thoughts a’driftin’
I ain’t even listenin’
While it all goes right over my head

I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
In the middle of his creation
In an old Jon Boat with my Zip pole rod
For some private conversation
There might be a few people talkin’ bad about me
When they see that I’m a’missin’
But I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
Than in church with my mind on fishin’

I’d rather be on the lake with my mind on God
Than in church with my mind on fishin’

With my mind on fishin’

Lyrics:
Remember those walls that we called sin and shame
They were like prisons that we couldn’t escape
But He came and He died and He rose
Those walls are rubble now

Remember those giants we called death and grave
They were like mountains that stood in our way
But He came and He died and He rose
Those giants are dead now

This is our God
This is who He is
He loves us
This is our God
This is what He does
He saves us
He bore the cross
Beat the grave
Let heaven and earth proclaim
This is our God
King Jesus

Remember that fear that took our breath away
Faith so weak that we could barely pray
But He heard every word, every whisper

Now those altars in the wilderness
Tell the story of His faithfulness
Never once did He fail and He never will

This is our God
This is who He is
He loves us
This is our God
This is what He does
He saves us
He bore the cross
Beat the grave
Let heaven and earth proclaim
This is our God
King Jesus

Who pulled me out of that pit
He did
He did
Who paid for all of our sin
Nobody but Jesus

Who pulled me out of that pit
He did
He did
Who paid for all of our sin
Nobody but Jesus

Who rescued me from that grave
Yahweh Yahweh
Who gets the glory and praise
Nobody but Jesus

Who rescued me from that grave
Yahweh Yahweh
Who gets the glory and praise
Nobody but Him

This is our God
This is who He is
He loves us
This is our God
This is what He does
He saves us
He bore the cross
Beat the grave
Let heaven and earth proclaim
This is our God
King Jesus

He bore the cross
Beat the grave
Let heaven and earth proclaim
This is our God

LYRICS

I felt the life
Felt the life slip out of me
Black as night
As night
Blue as the sea

I would have done anything
I would have given everything for you
I would have done anything
I would have given everything for you

I, I forgive you
You are not what you have done
Oh I, I forgive you
Now it’s time for me to move on
Oh I, I forgive you
You cannot see right from wrong
Oh I, and I love you
Always in my heart you live on
You live on

Good people sin
When yearning’s unspoken
You broke my heart
Broke my heart but it's still beating

Oh I would have done anything
I would have given everything for you
I would have done anything
I would have given everything for you

I, I forgive you
You are not what you have done
Oh I, I forgive you
Now it’s time for me to move on
Oh I, I forgive you
You cannot see right from wrong
Oh I, and I love you
Always in my heart you live on
You live on

LYRICS:

Staring at a stop sign
Watching people drive by
T Mac on the radio
Got so much on your mind
Nothing’s really going right
Looking for a ray of hope

Whatever it is you may be going through
I know He’s not gonna let it get the best of you

You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight ‘til the final round
You’re not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it’s hopeless
That’s when He reminds You
That you’re an overcomer
You’re an overcomer

Everybody’s been down
Hit the bottom, hit the ground
Oh, you’re not alone
Just take a breath, don’t forget
Hang on to His promises
He wants You to know

The same Man, the Great I am
The One who overcame death
Is living inside of You
So just hold tight, fix your eyes
On the One who holds your life
There’s nothing He can’t do
He’s telling you

Letra 🎵

Sólo tú me complementas
No tengo dudas
Sin darme cuenta le diste cura
A la soledad que me mataba
Tú me diste lo que me faltaba

No sé ni cómo explicar
Lo que yo siento por ti
Eres tan fundamental
En mi vida tan crucial
Y no quiero imaginar

Sólo tú me complementas
No tengo dudas
Sin darme cuenta le diste cura
A la soledad que me mataba
Tú me diste lo que me faltaba

No sé ni cómo explicar
Lo que yo siento por ti
Eres tan fundamental

Y no quiero imaginar

“Ready Set” Lyrics:

Kash Doll
Big Sean, ayy
Daytrip took it to ten (Hey)

Ready set, better yet
Got this bitch rocking like we never left
Big time, big, big time
All she want from me is just a little time
Flooded out the venue, ayy
I look better than what I've been through, yeah
It's a celebration, ayy
'Cause we made it out the basement, ayy
Stayed hungry, stayed patient, ayy
Then we made it out the basement, yeah

Diamonds, you can spot 'em in my ear (That's right)
I'm at the jeweler, I ain't cop 'em from De Beers (Woo)
Louis luggage at the bottom of the Lear (Yeah)
Hotter than the summer hits, I got 'em for the year
Kash Doll, I'm poppin', I ain't never flowin' wack
Oh you scared to cop it? What, you scared to blow a stack?
Me and Sean, we chillin' in the stu', we blowing back (That's right)
And failure's not an option, I ain't never goin' back (Never)
Fact, I took a detour, had to keep learnin'
He a D-boy, you a cheap version
Do arenas now like we preach, sermon
I'm a D girl, so I'm determined, uh (What's up?)

Ready set, better yet
Got this bitch rocking like we never left
Big time, big, big time
All she want from me is just a little time
Flooded out the venue, ayy
I look better than what I've been through, yeah
It's a celebration, ayy
'Cause we made it out the basement, ayy
Stayed hungry, stayed patient, ayy
Then we made it out the basement, yeah

Bottles poppin', nonstoppin', yeah we celebrate (Celebrate)
Been rich, boy, pockets on hella straight (Yeah)
Got him on his knees, meditate, look
I'm hella great, look, I never wait
This is bomb music, I'm 'bout to detonate
Dear, yes, Lear jets, had to elevate
Pockets on swole, like I'm selling weight
Plus I get it in a crunch, lemon cake
More money than they thought that I would ever made (That's right)
Plus I stay gettin' paid, Section 8
I don't go Dutch, I don't ever pay
Boo'd up in Belize, Ella Mai, ayy

Ready set, better yet
Got this bitch rocking like we never left
Big time, big, big time
All she want from me is just a little time
Flooded out the venue, ayy
I look better than what I've been through, yeah
It's a celebration, ayy
'Cause we made it out the basement, ayy
Stayed hungry, stayed patient, ayy
Then we made it out the basement, yeah

Daytrip took it to ten (Hey)
