Neil is a veteran producer and DJ and has been at the front line of all aspects of club and sound system culture since the mid 80’s when he first began to go to nightclubs, gigs, and illegal parties. His musical CV includes playing everywhere from plush clubs to dirty warehouses as well as mixing tunes on a variety of iconic London pirate radio stations. He has released music on numerous underground record labels and was responsible for promoting and playing at a series of legendary early raves in the USA at the start of the 90’s. He still DJ's in the UK and throughout Europe and beyond and has an eclectic and seriously deep collection of music built up over time that reflects an appreciation of all elements of the London groove. He also runs a respected subcultural podcast called "Tales From A Disappearing City" which is available on his YouTube channel and also across all podcast streaming platforms. On his YouTube channel he also uploads rare audio from his personal archive including radio shows he recorded back in the day.

In 1991 Alice in Chains would join the Clash of the Titans tour - a package tour that included Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth. While Alice in Chains has earned the respect of metal fans around the world, they were pretty early in their career in this point and people didn’t really know who they were or they were starting to wake up to how great this band is.What you may not know, is that, Alice in Chains was never even supposed to be on the tour. In today’s video let’s talk about the Clash of the Titants tour and how the band went from being reviled by fans and pegged as a “hippy pop band” to earning the audience and fellow musicians respect.
In 1990 Alice in Chains would release their debut record Facelift. While we all know it later became a success thanks to the single man in the box, it was a truly slow burn and the band owed much of their success to MTV who added the song to it’s buzz bin in the spring of 1991. The album quickly went from 40,000 in sales to becoming gold, selling half a million copies.
The Clash of the Titans tour would have two legs. One took place from September to October of 1990 with the other taking place from May to July of 1991. For the second leg it was supposed to feature the Bay Area trash band Death Angel who was supposed to play the nearly 50 date tour acros North America. But on November 28, 1990 the band’s bus was involved in a crash that seriously injured their drummer Andy Galeon. Unable to perform the tour, Death Angel were replaced with Alice in Chains. For Alice in Chains they had toured with an eclectic bunch of artists for Facelieft with them first opening for the band Extreme, a band whose members and crew they did not really get along with. Then they went on to play with Iggy Pop, Poison and later Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen.
Slayer guitarist Kerry King had initially branded Alice In Chains as a "a hippy pop band". While the label was inaccurate, it did foreshadow the attitude Alice would get from Slayer’s audience.
Alice in Chains Guitarist Jerry Cantrell would recall to an interview just how well received they were admitting “Slayer fans were brutal to us,” “When we played at Red Rocks, they were throwing so much shit at us that we could hardly see the crowd.
“Someone threw a huge water jug that knocked over Sean’s cymbals, and spit was flying everywhere. Layne just shouted ‘Fuck you!’ and spit back at them.” and trading blows with them. So we all jumped the barricades and did the same thing."

King meanwhile would remember some audiences urinating in a big gallon jug and dumping it on alice in chains remarking "They dumped it on Alice in Chains more than once. I was just like, Goddamn, that sucks." It was a pretty frequent occurence for audiences to pelt alice in chains with whatever objects they could.
Following the show at Red Rocks, Alice in Chains headed back to their bus they ran into a group of Slayer fans who had backstage passes who started walking towards the band. Jerry would add ‘We’re gonna get our fuckin’ asses kicked.’ But they walked over and went, ‘Okay, man. You didn’t puss out. I guess you’re all right.’” Once the band got validation from Slayer fans, the band could feel like things were changing for them.
When the tour would stop in Seattle for a show at the Mercer arena, Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine would be interviewed by guitar world magazine. The interviewer would tell Mustaine that Alice in Chains used to be a glam band, which Mustaine wasn’t aware of. It had turned out the interviewer, a guy named Jeff Gilbert had some t-shirt designs of when Alice in Chains used to be more glam when they used the monicker Alice N’ Chains. . He sent some of the t-shirts to Mustaine who had his tour manager make posters from the photos and put them up all over the Mercer Arena. Gilbert would recall to author David De Sola in teh book alice in chains the untold story
