In Part 5 of Mickey Stevenson’s incredible journey, we dive deeper into his crucial role in shaping the Motown sound and mentoring some of the most iconic artists in music history. Mickey recounts his pivotal work with Marvin Gaye, a jazz singer who was pushed by Motown founder Berry Gordy to transition into R&B. Mickey, with his sharp instincts, guided Marvin to embrace the soulful style that would make him a star, helping produce some of Marvin’s first major hits, including "Stubborn Kind of Fella."

We also hear about Mickey’s involvement in the creation of one of Motown's biggest anthems—"Dancing in the Street." Originally meant for Kim Weston, the song's demo was unexpectedly recorded by Martha Reeves, leading to a historic decision that would change the course of Motown’s legacy. Mickey’s ability to spot raw talent and his knack for knowing when to push artists out of their comfort zones helped transform the music industry.

These stories are just a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes magic Mickey Stevenson helped create at Motown. With his unique approach to mentoring, discovering talent, and navigating the tough decisions that come with building an empire, Mickey’s contributions were pivotal in shaping the sound of an era.

To hear more of Mickey’s firsthand account of Motown’s rise, make sure to grab a copy of his book, and dive deeper into the stories that helped define music history.

Stephen Thompson | December 15, 2023
Tiny Desk concerts involve challenges and constraints that aren't always immediately apparent: The crowd stands closer than many artists expect, it's truly a working office and not a soundstage, in-ear monitors are a no-no and so on. The guideline that caught Alvvays off-guard came in the form of our limit on reverb and other vocal sweeteners, which get used to glorious effect on 2022's Blue Rev, but are otherwise frowned-upon at the Tiny Desk.

The restriction forced the Toronto band — and recent first-time Grammy nominee — well outside its comfort zone. But it also shined a bright light on the radiant and expressive voice of Molly Rankin while proving, in the spirit of T-Pain, that not every vocal enhancement is there to hide imperfections. Still, Rankin acknowledged the nerves involved in making this show happen: "We've not worked up the courage to do this until today," she said with a chuckle, acknowledging (however indirectly) that we'd been trying to make this Tiny Desk concert happen for ages.

The band needn't have worried, as its magnificent recreation of Blue Rev's billowy, shoegaze-y sound lit up the room. By the time Rankin joked about replacing a retiring Bob Boilen, we were half-inclined to give her the job, just to keep Alvvays from leaving. Can you imagine a more lopsided trade?

Lyrics:
What is the use?
Point my head down, look at my shoes
Never did glance at you
Being away allows me to

Many chances, you blew
Little did I know, I’d have no clue
Many would turn to few
“Baby, my love” I’d once called you

I think you knew that you were wrong
But did you think I’d end up gone?

I would’ve done anything for you
I would’ve moved mountains
and you knew all along
Should’ve guessed that after long
I would’ve been here writing this song

Copy and paste
put myself back into place
Restore all of the peace
it really used to come so easily
Now I’m face to face
between the devil and me and the human race
all for goddamn grace
the little amount I’ve left to take

I think you knew that you were wrong
But did you think I’d end up gone?

I would’ve done anything for you
I would’ve moved mountains
and you knew all along
Should’ve guessed that after long
I would’ve been here writing this song

I would’ve done anything for you
(I’ll try to let it all out)
I would’ve moved mountains
(I’ll try to tell you how I felt)
and you knew all along
(I’ll try to let this wash away)
Should’ve guessed that after long
(I’ll try to find the needle in the hay)
I would’ve been here writing this song

Oooooohhhh
Oooooohhhh
Oooooohhhh
Oooooohhhh

I would’ve done anything for you
I would’ve moved mountains
and you knew all along
Should’ve guessed that I’d be gone
I shouldn’t be here writing this song

Peter Gabriel has inhabited many roles. From a costumed prog poet in Genesis to a conservationist balladeer on the Wall-E soundtrack. However his run of self-titled albums are where he found himself as a musician.

On his third album in 1980, he took all the post punk, synth pop and world music happening around him and blended it into his twitchy lopsided art rock. Gabriel spun tales of mental health disarray and anthems of dissatisfaction, and, with help from a French game show and Kate Bush, whistled his way to one of his biggest hits. This is New British Canon and This is the Story of “Games Without Frontiers.”

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Rhythm Roulette fans. While most of y’all don’t deserve shit the way you’ve been wilding in the comments sections this past year, we decided to let it slide and gift you with a new episode featuring the North Carolina legend 9th Wonder.
After linking up at The Record Krate in Raleigh, we joined 9th back at his studio to watch the master at work. With Charly McClain, Jermaine Jackson, and The Temprees at his disposal, the GRAMMY award-winning producer warmed up with a few quick flips before ultimately chopping up Lovemen. The final result was so crazy, Rapsody immediately hopped in the booth to bless it with a proper verse.

What started as a humble graffiti ‘zine in 1996 would soon grow to be one of the most trusted outlets for youth-spawned urban culture. Today, Mass Appeal is a media collective led by authentic voices and inspired minds. We are a platform for radical creatives who are transforming culture.

In light of the ongoing interest in the 2Pac case, we take a look back at Mob James’ 2019 VladTV interview, where he spoke about being in close proximity to 2Pac and Suge Knight. In this full interview, Mob James detailed his first meeting with Suge Knight and later working security at his record label. This led to Mob James telling stories about his time at the label, including being with Suge for the infamous Vanilla Ice incident and Suge nearly being kidnapped. During the conversation, Mob James also spoke about 2Pac being hit in Las Vegas, a war breaking out afterward, and his thoughts on Keefe D. To hear more, including Mob James’ message to Suge Knight, hit the full interview above.

Swizz Beatz opens up the cypher. Are you Team Swiss or Team Timberland? His lineup is strong with Foggieraw, Symba, Cassidy and Scar Lip. #hiphopawards23 #hiphopawards
