Whenever i listen to terrestrial radio where I live few Canadian few bands seem to get as much play as Our Lady Peace. The only band I feel like I hear more is The Tragically Hip.Today, let’s talk about the how the band got so popular - thanks in large part to their first two records.

I was in grade 6 living in a small town Alberta. A place called Edson - halfway between Edmonton and Jasper. I spent most of my youth there. That year we got a Tim Hortons, well it wasn’t just any tim hortons it was a tim hortons and wendy’s, we got on the map that year. One day a girl came in my class and said her Mom who was working at the tim hortons served the members at Our Lady Peace who came through town on their tour bus. This was when they were touring on their massive record Clumsy - Superman’s dead was inescapable. Well the kids in our class were super impressed.

Our Lady Peace was born out of a chance meeting between guitarist Mike Turner and vocalist Raine Maida in 1992. Turner is seven years senior to Maida. Thanks to a now weekly toronto entertainment magazine called Now.. Turner posted an ad looking for a singer.. Maida responded to that ad. They soon met and found they had a shared musical vision.

Turner spent his teenage years in England before moving to Canada to do schooling at the university of western ontario where got an english degree.. He hlightlighted.Sex Pistols as one of his biggest influences Before forming out lady peace Turner worked in a machine shop and originally planned on doing biochemistry and genetics in university but he credited ayn rand’s book fountainhead as convincing him to really pursue his dreams of music.

Maida for his part studied criminology at the University of Toronto.Maida was influenced by stevie wonder, joy division, u2,, radiohead, blur, otis redding, tori amos, Maida told muchmusic his favourite vocalists were women - loving the passion a women could sing with. In fact a lot of press coverage focused on maida’s falsetto.

The duo quickly realized their shared musical vision and began recruiting other members to complete the lineup with their original rhythm section dropping out. Apparently Maida and Turner felt like they were more committed than their original bassist and drummer. They put another ad in the magazine and were soon joined by bassist Chris Eacrett and drummer Jeremy Taggart, solidifying the band's early lineup. Taggart, the youngest of the group was only 18 at the time finishing high school by correspondance with turner remarking to the drumme when they first met “jeez, does your mother know your here.” but once they started jamming that awkwardness was gone.

I do want to say that entertainment magazine Now wasn’t very kind to our lady peace when they got big with guitarist mike turner recalling “they’re the only magazine in the country that pretty much that gave us less than favourable reviews.”

”The name "Our Lady Peace" was inspired by a 1943 poem by Mark Van Doren, reflecting the band's deep, philosophical approach to music with Maeda telling the morning call “the poem is pretty dark, very interpretive. But it’s not about being heavy handed at all, but being open to suggestion.””

In their formative years, OLP was labed as being post-grunge or alternative rock drawing frequent comparisons to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden in addition to led zeppelin. I do want to point out that in a lot of interviews for the band’s first two albums the band almost put down these groups citing their dark outlook in their lyrics without offering much in the way of hope. The band’s lyrics were frequently labeld as being darkly optimistic.

Our Lady Peace managed to carve out a unique niche for themselves, thanks in large part to Maida's distinctive vocals and the band's penchant for introspective lyrics. Maida described the band’s sound as a melting pot and added that the fact the members didn’t know each other super well led to a lot more spontaneity in their music. The group band opted to not focus on live shows initially, choosing to writeinstead. .Maida and Turner attended a music industry seminar in Toronto where each of them shelled out about $135. Five bucks says longtime rap fans got chills when they first heard Common and Pete Rock were working on a project. Chicago’s most poetic OG connecting with the revered Mt. Vernon hero behind “They Reminisce Over You”? C’mon, that’s an event. And maybe those chills became a bit more pronounced when the same fans heard “Wise Up,” the first volley from the ‘The Auditorium Vol. 1.’ The track and its very cool video arrived with an old school gravitas driven by a modern sense of kinetics. Turns out ‘The Auditorium Vol 1.’ glows with a classic aura from start to finish. Boom bap echoes with a 2024 sheen. We brought our cameras to the very place where they cut the new project: the famed Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, where it was quickly apparent that the legends were in their element, chopping it about everything from the ins and outs of their partnership to the state of “real rap.” Interwoven ctrl performances elevate the experience to the next level, too. Gang Starr:

The group was founded in 1986 by Guru (then known as Keithy E. The Guru) and DJ 1,2 B-Down (also known as Mike Dee) with various producers, such as Donald D, J.V. Johnson or DJ Mark the 45 King helping out. In 1987 and 1988, Gang Starr released three 12" vinyl singles on the Wild Pitch label.

In 1989, the group split and the only member willing to continue under the name Gang Starr was Guru. He soon got in touch with DJ Premier (then known as Waxmaster C) who sent him a beat tape which Guru liked. He invited DJ Premier to join Gang Starr and in that same year they released their first single "Words I Manifest" along with the album "No More Mr. Nice Guy" (1989).

During their career Gang Starr helped pioneer the New York hip hop sound, and in fact, many an artist who achieved greater notoriety owes much of their sound, lyrical style, and even content to Gang Starr. The entirety of Gang Starr's catalog, especially Step in the Arena (1990), Daily Operation (1992) "Hard to Earn" (1994) and Moment of Truth (1998) are well-respected among critics. Their track "Jazz Thing", featured on the soundtrack to Spike Lee's film Mo' Better Blues, helped establish the sound of jazz rap.

Both members of Gang Starr have deep roots in the New York hip hop scene, despite hailing from Boston, Massachusetts (Guru) and Houston, Texas (DJ Premier), and have each worked with countless artists.

The Gang Starr Foundation was a loose collective of various people who have worked closely with the group, through either Guru's now defunct Ill Kid label, DJ Premier's production work or the management company that Gang Starr was represented by, Empire Management. The founding member was Vikar.

Nice & Smooth:

Nice & Smooth is an East Coast hip hop duo from New York City that consists of Greg Nice (Greg Mays) and Smooth B (Daryl Barnes), plus their DJ Teddy Tedd (Tedd Whiting). The duo released four albums between 1989 and 1997. Their first collaborative appearance was on the song "Skill Trade" on Strange Family Records in 1988. On the strength of that underground single they managed a guest spot on the song "Pimpin Ain't Easy" by Big Daddy Kane on his 1989 album, It's a Big Daddy Thing.

Nice & Smooth's biggest radio fame came from "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow...," from the group's second album, Ain't a Damn Thing Changed, released in 1991. The song was a moderately somber rhyme with introspective lines about poverty, AIDS, and drugs that was set to the guitar loop from Tracy Chapman's hit "Fast Car". In the summer of 1992, the music video received heavy rotation on MTV. "Hip-Hop Junkies," which featured a sample from The Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You" was also a hit, and it was once performed live on Keenan Ivory Wayans' comedy/variety TV show, In Living Color. The duo is known for their humorous rhymes and catchy hooks. They often appeared as guest emcees on albums by the Beatnuts, Gang Starr, and Tony Touch, among many others. They were represented by Reggie Osse.

2Pac intended to sign Greg Nice to his Makaveli Records label[citation needed] and even recorded tracks with the duo for his One Nation album, which featured other artists such as Smif-n-Wessun, Luniz, Snoop Dogg. Trugoy from De La Soul paid homage to Nice & Smooth by using each member's rhyming style in verses on the song "Simply Havin'" from De La Soul's AOI: Bionix album.

Smooth B wrote rhymes for Bobby Brown that appeared on his debut album King of Stage and second album Don't Be Cruel. In 2005, he released a single titled "Game Over", produced by DJ Premier, and released a single in 2014 called "Set It Off".
