Tom Browne ~ Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.) 1980 Jazz Funk Purrfection Version Hotney 19 Streams • 2 years ago

Jazz trumpeter Tom Browne topped the R&B charts for four weeks with a song that was a valentine to his Jamaica home in Queens, New York. Jamaica is a middle class neighborhood that has a large African American and Caribbean population. It was established in 1656 as a colony when the Dutch ruled New Netherlands which included territory now held by New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

The name Jamaica came from the Lenape Indians who called the area "yamecah" which meant beaver. The Dutch spelled it with a "j", which in their language is sounds like "y". Over time, the English took over and retained the Dutch spelling of jamecah and the hard J sound slowly took over and the name transformed to Jamaica.

Thomas Frederick Browne was born October 30, 1954 in Jamaica, Queens. He was a student of New York's High School of Music and Art he became a regular on the New York jazz scene as a trumpet player and in 1978 he played in a club where George Benson also played and was offered a contract with GRP Music, distributed by Clive Davis' Arista Records.

He is also a licensed air pilot in addition to gigging with other jazz greats like Lonnie Liston Smith, Sonny Fortune and Weldon Irvine.

He released his first LP "Browne Sugar" in 1979 which contained a cover of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway hit, "The Closer I Get To You" and disco oriented jazz funk.

His second LP, "Love Approach" released in 1980 was his breakout hit album that contained "Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.)" a #1 R&B hit for four weeks. Surprisingly, the song totally missed the Hot100 probably due to the disco backlash and was not promoted.

He decided to name a jam he had done "Funkin' For Jamaica" while he was at his parents home and wrote the bass line. He handed that to Bernard Wright, a jazz keyboardist and the son of Roberta Flack. He loved what he heard and got right into the groove and laid down some awesome synth tracks, with Dave Grusin on piano, Marcus Miller on bass, Bobby Broom on guitar, Buddy Williams on drums and Crusher Bennett on percussion in a jam session that really got cookin!

The final piece of this puzzle was vocalist Toni Smith, whose vibrant vocals resembled Chaka Khan which led to a lot of confusion when record buyers asked for "the new Chaka Khan" tune. To give the song more energy, the group developed a rap and it included the party sounds of many of their neighbors in Jamaica.

Hit singles have eluded him since then, but he built a strong jazz following that saw him release an album a year up to 1984, then sporadically with the most recent waxing, "S'up" in 2010. While the Hot100 ignored him, he got the last laugh as "Funkin' For Jamaica" has become a touchstone and a staple of house parties and dance DJ's around the world all the way to today that prove its universal appeal and influence. It's a happy party song, funky but firmly planted in jazz, just like the residents of Jamaica, NY.

Emerson String Quartet: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 12 Streams • 3 years ago

Tom Huizenga | November 6, 2023
The cameras were rolling long before the Emerson String Quartet played a note behind the Tiny Desk. A documentary film crew followed the band into our lobby and kept rolling tape as the players unpacked their instruments, sat down to warm up and joked ceaselessly among themselves.

The reason for all the fuss was to mark the final days of the nearly 50-year career of one of modern history’s most durable, beloved and prolific chamber ensembles. Just two days after we captured this performance, the band played its final concert together in New York, where it all began in 1976 when a couple Juilliard students thought putting together a string quartet might be a fun idea. Forty-some albums, nine Grammys and countless concerts later, we were honored to document one of the band’s last performances.

Typical for the Emersons, the music they chose was wide-ranging. A dash of Haydn served as a witty amuse-bouche, then on to a mini-movement from late in Beethoven’s career, when the composer could swing his moods with shockingly modern abandon. At the heart of this bittersweet concert is the Emersons’ achingly beautiful performance of George Walker’s Lyric for Strings. The Washington, D.C. native, in 1996, became the first Black composer to win a Pulitzer. The elegiac music poured out of the players in rich, intermingling layers.

But the band couldn’t leave on a somber note, so it closed with a rambunctious interpretation of the finale to Ravel’s string quartet — an appropriately effervescent way to say goodbye.

*ABOUT LUCK AND STRANGE*
‘Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on ‘Luck and Strange’, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating, “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.”

The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’ and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn.

Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house.

Some contributions emerged from the live streams that Gilmour and family performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on ‘Between Two Points’. Gabriel Gilmour also sings backing vocals.

The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn, is inspired by a lyric written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’. Of working with his family on ‘Luck and Strange’, David says, “Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany’s voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I’d felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy.”
