Lyrics

Hey, once upon a younger year
When all our shadows disappeared
The animals inside came out to play
Hey, when face to face with all our fears
Learned our lessons through the tears
Made memories we knew would never fade
One day my father—he told me,
"Son, don't let it slip away"
He took me in his arms, I heard him say,
"When you get older
Your wild life will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid."
He said, "One day you'll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember."
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me
When thunder clouds start pouring down
Light a fire they can't put out
Carve your name into those shinning stars
He said, "Go venture far beyond the shores.
Don't forsake this life of yours.
I'll guide you home no matter where you are."
One day my father—he told me,
"Son, don't let it slip away."
When I was just a kid I heard him say,
"When you get older
Your wild life will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid."
He said, "One day you'll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember."
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me
These are the nights that never die
My father told me

(1969) (First release by The Messengers - September 7, 1967)

Like a sound you hear
That lingers in your ear
But you can't forget
From sundown to sunset

It's all in the air
You hear it everywhere
No matter what you do
It's gonna grab a hold on you

California soul, California soul
They say the sun comes up every morning
And if you listen carefully
The winds that ride on the high time
Whistle a melody
And so the people started to sing
And that's how the surf gave birth untold
California soul, California soul

When you hear the beat
You wanna pat your feet
And you've got to move
Cause it's really such a groove

Puts a brand new kind of thinking in your mind
And you can't go wrong
Cause you're groovin' all day long
California soul, California soul

They had the melody and the beat
But it still didn't seem complete
Until they saw two lovers kissin'
They knew just what was missin'

So happy they were rockin' and reelin'
Because they added that lovin' feeling
To California soul, California soul
California soul

DESDEMONA LYRICS:
Desdemona everything she says is a rollercoaster of slogans
She can’t help knowing where she’s going
High voltage rock n roller
Nobody can control her
And when you start to bore her
She gets lost
She’ll take off all your makeup
Leave you before you wake up
And then you’ll start to wonder
What’s it like in your head?
Dancing to no sound
Blocking it all out
What’s it like in your head?
Dancing to no sound
Blocking it all out
Oh I wanna know
She comes closer, smacks the floor with her patent leather
Creepers, jeepers, she’s taller than all the boys who linger
What’s it like in your head?
In your head
In your head
In your head
x 4
What’s it like in your head? x 2
Head
What’s it like in your head?
Head
What’s it like in your head?

This is a re-upload of a now-deleted, fan-created music video that impacted me deeply. I hope it does the same for you.

"We all try to control our little worlds.
We all come up with plans for our future, and we try to stay on track with those plans.
But life just happens, and it can blow everything we thought our life would be out of the water in a blink.
Nothing is ever really in its right place.
Yet, we never stop trying to put things 'right.'
We pick up pieces of our old, broken plans and we try to build new ones, over and over, totally at the mercy of our own chaotic little worlds."

can I embrace what I still can’t make sense of?
home’s the first place
you tried running away from
it’s hard to explain
and I kind of don’t want to
all that to say,
I can’t wait to get caught up on you

I say,
“I like the way that you get
lost in a moment”
you say,
“it’s the only way that
you can ever really hold it”
and I laugh
like I always do at hippie shit
you say you’d rather have the fun
than be the one making fun of it
I say,
“it’s sexy how you speak three languages”
you tell me,
“don’t say that,
you sound so fucking American”
and I kissed you before I let myself ruin it.
but if I’d thought it through,
I still would have gone through with it

we both like extended metaphors
connected loosely
we both like fancy champagne
mixed with White Claw or Truly
it taste better cause’
they shouldn’t go together
you taste better cause
we shouldn’t go together

can I embrace what I still can’t make sense of?
home’s the first place
you tried running away from
it’s hard to explain
and I kind of don’t want to
all that to say,
I can’t wait to get caught up on you

you’re high
and you’re talking about communism
I’m high
and I want to go down on a communist
I think that my kink is intellectualism
foreplay with songs set to 6/8 time rhythms

you make me want to lie
about my reading habits
care less about my social status
teach myself to comfortably
hold onto something
knowing I could never have it
you make me want to study up
on psychedelia
spend less time
on my social media
teach myself to comfortably
hold onto something
knowing I could never keep you

can I embrace what I still can’t make sense of?
home’s the first place
you tried running away from
it’s hard to explain
and I kind of don’t want to
all that to say,
I can’t wait to get caught up on you

caught up on you
caught up on you
all that to say
I can’t wait to get caught up on you

This in-depth exploration traces the tumultuous journey of punk rock icons Social Distortion, spearheaded by the indomitable frontman Mike Ness. Originating in Orange County's underground scene during the late 70s, the band faced a myriad of challenges and triumphs on their path to mainstream success in the 90s.

The narrative begins by unraveling Mike Ness's troubled upbringing, marked by a family upheaval that led him to find solace in music, initially influenced by The Rolling Stones and CCR before discovering the rebellious spirit of punk. The evolving lineup of Social Distortion is dissected, with Ness remaining as the sole original member, as they experimented with a unique fusion of blues, country, rockabilly, and punk.

The documentary-style storytelling delves into Ness's personal struggles with addiction, providing a candid view of his battles with drugs and the impact it had on his life and the band. The script unfolds the band's rise to prominence with pivotal albums like "Mommy's Little Monster" and "Prison Bound," showcasing their musical evolution and the challenges faced within the burgeoning punk rock scene.

Significant moments in Social Distortion's career are spotlighted, including hit singles that propelled them into the mainstream and the profound influence of heroin addiction on Ness's life. The script navigates through lineup changes, exploring how they shaped the band's identity, and tragically, the loss of guitarist Dennis Danell.

As punk rock gained popularity, the narrative details the band's decision to embrace a broader audience, leading to their evolution into a major label act. Social Distortion's enduring legacy within the punk rock scene is dissected, with reflections on their impact and influence.

The script concludes with a glimpse into the band's most recent album in 2011, "Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes," and hints at their future endeavors, leaving the audience with a sense of anticipation for the next chapter in Social Distortion's storied career.

"God Knows" lyrics
Flashes of blood and bone
An empty vessel in between its home
You wrap around my feet
Pooling like wet cement, I sink

Clawing to get away
But every branch I hold onto breaks
Where do I go from here?
Panic sets in and I start to shake

Loathing
Crushed by the weight of the terror

All life reduced to stone
A beam of light pulls you above the ground
Out of the water through the parted clouds
All life reduced to stone

I am withering at the helm
Suffocating, and overwhelmed
I hand you to god
Carve your name
Everything burns
Nothing remains

We are gathered here today
Under the pressure of a weary gaze
Hydrate the garden
Decorate the grave

Lowered beneath the dirt

The trumpet tolls for the blood I harvest

Flashes of blood and bone
An empty vessel in between its home
God knows I belong to hell
Thats why he left me here by myself

GOD KNOWS

Lyrics:
Run run better run run better run
Run run better run run better run

Destiny on the red horizon
Hunters gather for the feast
Spread the word they have come to chase you
Kill the demon, kill the beast

Watch them now as you creep in silence
Close enough to smell their fear
Flames reflect in your sharpened eyes as
You get ready, you're still here

Make fright your companion
And clouds steal the light
You won't be abandoned tonight

Run run better run run better run
Find a hideout in the shadows
Run run better run run better run
Feel the fear let it make you strong
Run run better run run better run
Across the the fields and meadows
Here they come
The race is on
You better run
Run run better run run better run

Still alive they will never get you
Nobody will hunt you down
You're the king of this ancient forest
No intruder's safe and sound

Make fright your companion
And clouds steal the light
The race is gonna end here tonight

Run run better run run better run
Find a hideout in the shadows
Run run better run run better run
Feel the fear let it make you strong
Run run better run run better run
Across the the fields and meadows
Here they come
The race is on
You better run
Run run better run run better run

Make fright your companion
And clouds steal the light
You won't be abandoned tonight

Run run better run run better run
Find a hideout in the shadows
Run run better run run better run
Feel the fear let it make you strong
Run run better run run better run
Across the the fields and meadows
Here they come
The race is on
You better run
Run run better run run better run
Run run better run run better run
Run run better run run better run
