Salena Jones (born Joan Elizabeth Shaw, January 29, 1938, is an American jazz and cabaret singer. She started performing with her original name Joan Shaw in the late 1940s. She performed in various styles including jazz and R&B. Salena started practising singing in the church and school. At the age of fifteen she started performing in clubs. After some time performing at night clubs in Florida and elsewhere she began touring with an R&B band. Salena faced with a lot of racism in the Us and decided to change her name to Salena Jones. She said: "I loved Sarah Vaughan so much and adored Lena Horne's elegance; I put them together as 'Salena.' It looked good. And I kept Joan in 'Jones.' It wasn’t until she moved to England that she started performing with her new name. This footage came from the TV-program: Music All In. The whole performance have been very well preserved by the AVROTROS and digitized by InnArchive.

Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and composer. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". He was often referred to as "The Genius". Charles was blind from the age of seven.
He played several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival. This is the second concert that day in 1980.

Marie Magdalena Dietrich (1901 – 1992) was a German-American actress and singer with a major leading role in the 1930s and 1940s.
‘Where have all the flowers gone’, a song written by Pete Seeger about the madness of war. Almost nobody could better perform this song then Marlene Dietrich, who was known for her strong political anti-Nazi convictions. In 1930, Dietrich moved to the US and later on she created a fund with Billy Wilder and several other exiles to help Jews and dissidents escape from Germany. Although Marlene was very clear how she felt about the Nazis, Hitler once persuade her to return to Germany and support the Nazis. Not only did she refuse his offer, she applied for an American citizenship and recorded a number of anti-Nazi albums in German for the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the CIA.
This footage came from the Grand Gala Du Disque tv-how recorded and broadcast in the Netherlands in 1963.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (Montreal, August 15, 1925 - Toronto, December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer.
His father taught him to play the trumpet and piano at the age of five. After contracting tuberculosis, he focused on the piano when he was seven. He quickly gained the reputation of a technically brilliant and melodically inventive jazz pianist, becoming a regular guest on radio programs. He made his first appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1949.

He has played with Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Ed Thigpen, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Stan Getz, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Clark Terry and Joe Pass, among others. An important moment in his career was when he joined the labels of impresario Norman Granz (especially Verve Records), which enabled him to collaborate with the great jazz artists of the time.

This performance which featured songs from the film West Side Story, was first broadcast on August 15, 1965 by AVRO Television, the Netherlands

Three of the all time greatest jazz guitarists perform their unique skills on the guitar:

Barney Kessel, born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA on October 17, 1923 was known for his chord-based melodies and was a prolific member of the so-called ‘Wrecking Crew’ group of musicians that accompanied and played on records as diverse as The Mamas & Papas, Sonny & Cher and The Beach Boys.
He was voted best guitarist in Down Beat Magazine in 1956, 1957 and 1958 and recorded numerous albums. The Gibson Guitar Corporation introduced the Barney Kessel model guitar in 1961 to honour his skills. Barney died on May 6, 2004.

Herb Ellis was an American guitarist who probably was best known as member of Oscar Peterson’s Trio in the 1950’s. He was born on August 4, 1921 as Mitchell Herbert Ellis. He played with Jimmy Dorsey’s band and played on numerous Verve records supporting jazz giants like Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Herb died on March 20, 2010.

Charlie Byrd was one of America’s greatest guitarists. Born on September 16, 1925 in Suffolk, Virginia, he was strongly influenced by Django Reinhardt’s style and Brazilian bossa nova.
He played in Woody Herman’s band in the late 1950’s and recorded ‘Jazz Samba’ with Stan Getz. Also he recorded the famous bossa nova albums with João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Byrd died on December 2, 1999.

The three great guitarists are accompanied by Joe Byrd, Charlie’s brother, on bass and Chuch Redd on drums.

For Madison McFerrin to deliver the proper experience of her live show at the Tiny Desk, she wanted to be sure she had the freedom to use the instruments that helped identify her. The LA-based singer has become well-known for looping vocals over and over again; thus, creating instruments in real-time. To celebrate her upcoming album, SCORPIO, McFerrin brings a Chicago-based band led by Kameron Lowe and featuring The Lovely Lowe Sisters on background vocals.

Given her family history, McFerrin’s dive into the music business was a foregone conclusion. She and her brothers Taylor and Jevon chose entertainment as a career, taking after their father, Bobby McFerrin, who famously recorded the groundbreaking hit “Don’t Worry Be Happy” in 1988. Before playing her latest single, “I Don’t,” she mentions them all while serving up some “McFerrin tea.” “My mother is seemingly the only one with any sense because she’s the only one out of the five of us who hasn’t been engaged more than once.”
