Although her 1989 debut album, All Hail the Queen, sold less than 500,000 copies, it still made a major impact. And just like that, Queen Latifah became a spokesperson for a neglected constituency -- young black women. As the author of 11 out the projects 12 original tracks, Dana Elaine Owens, later more famously known as Queen Latifah, developed her writing and rhyming skills at a very young age. While growing up in East Orange, New Jersey, the always smart Latifah was identified as gifted in elementary school, and went on to skip a grade. She adopted the latter part of her stage name, meaning “gentle”, “kind” and “pleasant,” in Arabic when she was just 8 years old. She’s said the "Queen" in her name is more about strength and about women being treated as such.
She started rapping in high school after initially finding her voice singing in church and honed her skills performing at talent shows and parties. After her demo got the attention of the powers that be at Tommy Boy Music, she was signed by the label and released her first single, "Wrath of My Madness" in 1988 at the age of 18.

Here I am asking random people to sing in NYC, and a lot of people are saying. But Josh says yes! He is on his way to a concert. But little did he know, he would put on a concert for his friend right on the street!

Also met Signe who sings the second song. At first she seems a little shy, but her family encourages her to sing. As she sings, she gets more comfortable and her family watches in amazement!

As a musician, I'm all about creating musical experiences that have people feeling happy and free, and that's why the "Sing With Me for Free" series exists. Since 2018, I have asked thousands of random people to sing with me on camera. A lot of people have said no, some have said no initially but changed their minds to yes, and some have said yes right away. January 12, 2003 one of the best battles in Philadelphia history would take place between 2 of the cities heavyweights, ELLIOT NESS and HOLLOWMAN. This was part of the GARAGE BATTLE that was orchestrated between members of Take Down Records and Ice City. Although neither MC was apart of either crew, the night basically turned into a free for all and some of the best rose to the top to make history. At the time, Ness was nationally known for MAKING DA BAND and tearing up the underground scene through mix tapes and DVD appearances with his crew YHM. Hollowman represented his crew the Paper Chasers and was well known in the city as one of the best on the underground. He was a regular at Club Flow's showcases and battles, and his crew was heavy on the mixtape scene. The stars were aligned this night and the rest is history. This battle broke down doors for the underground rap scene in Philly with the audio making it's way onto Power99 FM's Friday night underground radio show (The Come Up Show), and it was regularly requested for years to follow.

Het Nederlandse televisieprogramma "Countdown" was van 1976 t/m 1993 “Europe’s Number 1 Rock Show” en werd uitgezonden bij Veronica. Later werd het programma ook uitgezonden in het buitenland en was het op z'n hoogtepunt in meer dan 20 landen op televisie te zien.

Gedurende deze 17 jaar muziekgeschiedenis zijn er opnames gemaakt met talloze internationale sterren, zoals Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, U2, The Police, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, New Order, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, R.E.M., Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Cure, Run DMC, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, New Kids On The Block, LL Cool J.

Uiteraard kwamen Nederlandse top-acts als Doe Maar, Andre Hazes, Herman Brood, Frank Boeijen, Spargo, Golden Earring, Time Bandits, De Dijk, De Raggende Manne, Hans de Booij, Gerard Joling, Drukwerk ook langs voor een optreden in Bussum.

Countdown werd gepresenteerd door oa Lex Harding, Erik de Zwart, Adam Curry, Simone Walraven Wessel van Diepen, Jeroen van Inkel, Rob Stenders, Simone Angel en Jasper Faber.

Het Countdown archief is vrijwel helemaal compleet en sinds 2017 eigendom van het Amerikaanse Reelin’ In The Years Productions (David Peck - https://reelinintheyears.com/) en Double 2 Hilversum (Jan Douwe Kroeske - http://www.double2bv.nl). Het archief bestaat uit meer dan 3.000 analoge mastertapes die allemaal gedigitaliseerd en gearchiveerd zijn.
