MUNA: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 7 Streams • 2 years ago

Stephen Thompson | June 23, 2023
“It’s very cool to see that everyone who works for NPR is ****,” MUNA singer-guitarist Katie Gavin deadpanned by way of introduction at the band’s Tiny Desk concert. For a band whose latest album is currently soundtracking its second straight Pride Month, MUNA has found a deep kinship with **** audiences — a fact Gavin noted during the lead-in to a country reworking of 2021’s irresistible “Silk Chiffon.”

“We love being ****, and we find a lot of joy in it,” she said. “We think, like, if the world is gonna change in the way that it needs to, it’s very important for our revolution to be based on joy, and what brings us joy, and chasing after that.”

“Silk Chiffon” embodies that idea, but it’s also deepened by the version MUNA unveiled here: As its melody was transformed by a string-infused arrangement, it revealed a clear undercurrent of yearning only hinted at in the original.

Expanded into a septet, MUNA used the setting as an opportunity to lean into its moodier side. “Loose Garment” placed Naomi McPherson at the piano as Gavin applied subtle effects to her own plaintive voice. And “Stayaway,” a highlight from 2019’s Saves The World, placed such a demand on the three voices at MUNA’s core — Gavin, McPherson and Josette Maskin — that they practically exploded with relief when it was over.

MUNA’s appearance happened to coincide with a loosening of pandemic restrictions at the Tiny Desk — most notably the hard cap on the number of audience members who could attend. It was hard to miss the sense of liberation, and the surge of energy, in the sheer size of the crowd.

Lyrics:
Aqui ya son las cinco
Pensando las veces que te he visto
Estoy que te escribo y no me resisto
Porfa no me dejes en visto
Sabes que me cuesta
Yo no insisto

Nah
No me entiendas no voy a cambiar
Mejor los parties y las farras
me las meto contigo Fumo contigo
Si tu no me escribes Pues baby yo te escribo

Fuck all that squashing and talking we trying to end niggas
Might throw yo shit back

These niggas shooting at randoms
They want some get back

To all you window shooters
I’m mista walk down
Cuz was slick with his tongue

Bitch I don’t wanna talk now
Fuck how much it cost now
Still be throwing 6’s free the 4’s
You know we off 5’s

Fuck a nigga bitch and try to switch

Take a nigga money cars jewels
Still thuggin with the hittas
This for all the killas
If I’m being honest

I feel like these niggas bitches
They weren’t out here with us
When we was out here drilling
They starting to see the chicken
Now they all up in the feelings
I’m yelling fuck a nigga
Ain’t never trust a nigga
I missed a whole year
And they still ain’t fucking with us

All of sudden they wanna win wit us
But ain’t spin with us
Ain’t load them glockie or choppas
or them fn’s with us
My niggas been killing
Dunk got like 10 with em
Fuck all that squashing and talking we trying to end niggas
Might throw yo shit back
I’m off a 6 pack
These niggas shooting at randoms
They want some get back

Why you ain’t slide for your mans
Who on that shit bag
Why you ain’t kill for them niggas who took that 10 for you
How yall be bragging on bitchs

This like my 6th summer
My neck cost 6 something
Nah we ain’t stop for the hook
We had a brick on us

You know this bitch on us
Can’t wait to catch a nigga playing
I’m putting that stick on him
This for the 6 homie
I’m from the east cuz
That bitch eat dick homie

All of sudden they wanna win with us
But ain’t stand up in them trenches
On all 10 with us

All of sudden they wanna win wit us
But ain’t spin with us
Ain’t load them glockie or choppas
or them fn’s with us
My niggas been killing

Fuck all that squashing and talking we trying to end niggas
Might throw yo shit back
I’m off a 6 pack
These niggas shooting at randoms
They want some get back
